I found some information about the man who seems to have been the last person buried in the Lansingburgh Village Burying Ground and added it to the page on findagrave.com. He was a recent immigrant from Scotland who lived in Albany. He died at his uncle’s house at 231 Fourth Avenue, Lansingburgh, two and a half blocks from the cemetery, which might partly explain why he was buried there. The cemetery had otherwise been closed to new burials in 1900 and in 1901 the City of Troy had reportedly decided on turning the cemetery into building lots as part of its “Greater Troy” ambitions, the latter plans fortunately somehow thwarted. Alexander Ritchie (1889-1912) http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=128150259 Just as the Mount Ida Cemetery on Pawling Avenue on findagrave http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=65347 has a lot of entries from the wrong cemetery (primarily from the bulldozed original Mount Ida Cemetery at Cypress Street), the Lansingburgh Village Burying Ground has a number of entries that shouldn’t be there as well. Following is a list of veterans supposedly buried at the LVBG followed by links to their actual burial place, the Soldiers Plat at Oakwood Cemetery. In some cases names or dates don’t quite match up, but I’d already found that several of the markers in the Soldiers Plat might have errors. A list I put together this evening of: * new veterans’ markers (incomplete - there’s still more to add, mostly Civil War veterans) * older veterans’ markers - DAR, Sons of Union Veterans, old government-issued ones * Veterans’ markers in Frances Broderick’s 1965 book not yet on findagrave * people who were possibly veterans according to Frances Broderick’s 1965 book * Veterans recorded by DAR around 1915 not yet on findagrave * Possibly veterans according to info on findagrave by site users https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7Mt-S77wZKfNHJfMGN0Y2t2SzA/view?usp=sharing The Lansingburgh Historical Society is going to schedule some more work days for placing the new markers, which has to be coordinated with the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office. Hi , I know Ryan is a tough name, like Murphy or the more common names, but... I had Ryans from Limerick who settled in West Troy and Cohoes. They were from Adare, more specifically Finniterstown or Drehidtarsna I dont have my notes handy. James Ryan and wife Bridget Duett and kids, in 1852. I would poke around on the IFHF website in the index to see if I could find a marriage in Limerick, but the miscreants went and changed it to a subscription site and not just a credit site. Did you find Thomas in the civil registration death index? Darusa-- The Ryan portion of my family is a big mystery to me. All I can tell you is that my great grandfather, Thomas Ryan, was born in Ireland in 1822 and died there is 1871 as the result of an accident. His youngest child, my great uncle Thomas Francis Ryan, was born in Limerick in March of 1872 and shortly after that immigrated to Cohoes with his widowed mother, Margaret H. (Dwyer) Ryan, and three older siblings, Patrick, Mary, and Anna. I learned from Thomas Francis' obituary that Thomas, his father, and Margaret, his mother, had 8 children in total, but nothing is known about them and they may have died in infancy prior to their father, Thomas', death in 1871. I do know that my great grandmother, Margaret H. (Dwyer) Ryan, did have family in Chateaugay, NY, at the time of her immigration, but don't know if any of her husband's family had immigrated to the States, too. I am specifically trying to identify the first burial which must have occurred in 1891--or possibly early 1892. Fran Scanlon
Has anyone been able to research death records at St. Bernard's Church in Cohoes? I am still trying to identify the unknowns in our family plot in St. Agnes Cemetery. I had assumed my grandmother and her family were members of St. Agnes Parish because of their purchase in the Cemetery. After closely reviewing my grandparent's marriage certificate I realized that they were married at St. Bernards, so my grandmother and her family were more likely members there. As I mentioned before, neither the Cemetery office nor the Diocese has any record of the burials which occurred in our plot prior to 1931. There is a record that my great grandmother, Margaret (Dwyer) purchased a 12 grave plot in 1891, that it is completely full, and we are still unable to identify 4 of the graves. Fran Scanlon

Revolutionary War veterans’ markers placed in Lansingburgh Village Burying Ground today include: * Abial Bugbee * William Chase * Samuel Cogswell * John Eastwood * Elisha Eldridge * Cyprian Howe * Jonas Morgan * Aaron Noble * Stephen Pelton * Christopher Tillman * Thomas Turner * John Weaver There was one other I’ll have to note tomorrow. At least two of the above have their original headstones still standing elsewhere in the cemetery. William Chase’s is broken, and Jonas Morgan’s is filthy. The DAR around 1915 and Frances Broderick around 1965 had located stones for some of the other men listed, but not all of them. I don’t know where LHS obtained their information about the others; we’ll have to find out sometime.
