More than 95 percent of all births in the US. Took place at HOME. Ninety percent of all U.S. Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which Were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Two out of every 10 U.S. Adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over The counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." There were about 230 reported Murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. ! Now I sent it to you and others all over the United States , Possibly the world, in a matter of just Seconds !!!!!!!!! PASS THIS ALONG!!!!! Just Try to imagine..... What it may be like . In another 100 years !!!!!!! IT STAGGERS THE MIND !!!!!!!!! **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Saturday February 9, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSundayFebruary 9, 1908 “Troy is an immoral Sabbath breaking city says Rev George Wood Anderson of the State Street Methodist Church. He has spent the day roaming incognito thru the heart of the city, investigating whether local saloons abided by Raines law which requires them to stay closed all Sunday. Saloon owners are obliged to keep their windows uncurtained so police and passerby can verify no one is drinking or selling alcolhol.Rev Anderson visits 40 saloons open for business in defiance of the law. He has purchased ten bottles of whiskey; in one case a bartender filled an empty catsup bottle because he had run out of proper liquor bottles. The Rev says he saw many well dressed people in these ugly, smelly places. Worse there were almost as many women as men smoking, drinking and cursing. On two occasions he saw policemen look thru the window or step inside and do nothing. Rev C. Waldo Cherry of the second Presbyterian Church concurs and on his walk around not only saloons but pool rooms and cigar stores were open." Friday February 8 2008Troy Record Article 100years agoSaturday February 8,1908 “The American Ice Company has abruptly halted ice harvesting activity in the vicinity of Albany putting 70 men out of work. Superintendent William Flynn says it is a complete surprise, having just filled their Beverwyck Island ice house with 10,000 tons of excellent ice between 10 and 12 inches in thickness. They were just starting to fill the Mould House in Rensselaer with 40,000 tons. The Record speculates that Agitation in favor of legislation averse to the cutting of ice from the Hudson River in this vicinity may have had something to do with it. It is based on complaints that American Ice has harvested from areas tainted by sewage and industrial waste, but American Ice denies this. I can't help but to jump in here. Did any of these your Costello's come from Limerick? My gr gr grandmother was Eleanor Costello. In 1831, at St. Peter and Paul Church (Troy), she married my gr gr grandfather, Dennis Rowan (Rohan, Roughan, and many other "creative" spellinigs). The marriage was performed by Father Shanahan. We know nothing of Eleanor's parents or siblings. We do know she was born about 1810, Limerick. About 1838, this Rowan family moved to China/now Arcade, New York. Their children were Maryann, Elizabeth, Edmund, John (these 4 were born in Troy between 1831-1838), Dennis, James, Daniel, Margaret, and Luke (the last 5 were born in China/Arcade between 1838-1852).
