    3. Some libraries also have access to Ancestry, such as the New York State Library. I would assume that other State Libraries also provide access. Ancestry.com can't be beat for it's search capabilities - such as searching by soundex and wild card, especially for names that are unusual or not indexed correctly (which are many). I sometimes find people by searching only on a first name, or a truncated first name in a particular place (if the first name is a bit uncommon) Rebecca ----- Original Message ----- From: "austin fadden" <aefadden@yahoo.com> To: <ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 03, 2008 3:57 PM Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Irish Acts of Kindness at TIGS > I also do not have access to Ancestry.com due to the expense. 2. Marilyn Wilson
    3. Years ago ancestry.com was fairly inexpensive and had fewer sources. I had to write letters to courthouses and churches all over the country and drive to the National Archives here in CA-90 minutes from my home, to local LDS sites for microfilms and to cemeteries in other states, etc. etc. Genealogy sources are available thanks to zillions of hours of work by volunteers-even the copies of state or federal records. To give back I help out at my own local genealogy library even tho' my families aren't here. Now I am saving hundreds of dollars in gasoline just by subscribing to ancestry. Unless you have researched the basic way, you can't appreciate the wonder of the internet site. There is no information.without persons digging it up, indexing it and printing it. Sometimes they have to be paid or overhead costs accounted for. Marilyn Wilson

    3. I have been trying for over a year to get on the Search Engine of the Gen-exchange web site for the records of the Emigrant Bank used by Irish immigrants who arrived in New York City in the 1800's and later. Every time I go on the web site, the search engine is temporarily down and has been saying that for all this time. Does anyone out there know of any other way to get at these records? I am sure that my great grandparents had accounts there and I could find a gold mine of information from them. Thanks to anyone who can be of assistance. Carol

    3. Have you ever wondered why so many really important documents are only available through Ancestry.com? I do not know if it is because they are the only ones interested in them so they readily receive permission to copy data from various sources, or is it because they pay large amounts for this information? I just find it really frustrating that everything I need seems to be on this web site but to most of us the price is exorbitant to belong. Am I the only one who questions this? Could you tell me if this Heritage Quest is available only through libraries? Do they have info on just America or Ireland etc. also? Thank you for the lead.. 3. Here is the link http://www.proquest.com/products_hq/ It appears to be available only by subscription by the institution, library, school, etc, I can access it remotele with my library card #. That probably depends on the negotiated subscription I think they may have info on other countries if it is part of the subscription I noticed that the Troy library has Ancestry.com but it can only be accessed at the library. At our library the census is the only useful part for me. The other data bases are restricted to Tennesse historical info I was hoping that my library had, but the Knox County Tennessee system is limited. I don't know what is available through the University or if it is avalabe to nonstudents A.E Fadden The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius had its limits. - Albert Einstein --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! 3. An article here explains some of what you are asking http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13483892/ and here is an excerpt-- "The Provo company was set to announce Thursday that it copied complete U.S. Census records from 1790 to 1930 — a Herculean effort that took a team of experts and workers a combined 6.6 million hours of labor. The U.S. government waits 72 years before releasing original census documents containing such personal information as an individual's occupation — actor Tom Hanks' grandfather, Clarence Frager, made a living as a rodent exterminator, a 1930 census record reveals. **Hours of legwork **Workers for Ancestry.com spent so much time compiling these records because they had to decipher the handwriting on millions of census forms. They had to index and catalog every name, and scan images of the census documents. In all, workers made 22 billion keystrokes to organize all the information, the company said. Ancestry.com, which claims more than 725,000 paid subscribers, says it now has the only online repository of historic U.S. Census records." 2. Friday February 22 2008Troy Record Article 100years ago Saturday February 22,1908 “Mayor Mann orders a citywide crackdown on saloons that violate Sunday closing rule. Ever since 1896, New York State law requires saloons to close at midnight Saturday nights and stay closed until 5am on Mondays. Under the Raines law , the only business that can sell liquor on Sundays are hotels, and they can serve liquor only to registered guests as part of a meal. Saloon owners all over town have been warned informally that they will take a chance to stay open tomorrow. The loudest objections come from the restaurant owners. They have to close if they have tables in the same room as a bar but a hotel laid out the same way can serve alcohol as long as someone registers as a guest and orders a light meal. In some cases hotels serve free lunches to stay within the law while profiting from selling drinks." Saturday February 23, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSundayFebruary 23, 1908 “It was a Sabbath such as has not been experienced in Troy for years before” says the Record reporter. While some of the liquor dealers were displeased, many saloon owners were pleased that their was no favoritism shown and all bars closed. "We like to have one day to ourselves "one saloon keeper said. Rev. C.F. Wilcox of Trinity Methodist says "we are not after the mayor’s head but warns that he, who having the power to prevent, knowingly permits the perpetration of a crime, is morally responsible for that crime and all its consequences. 2. Someone just asked if you had to join Ancestry to find census records. Please remember that TIGS has an excellent "Irish Acts of Kindness" page on their website _www.rootsweb.com~nytigs_ (http://www.rootsweb.com~nytigs) . The people on this page have volunteered to do reasonable look ups for TIGS list members. Go to the site, click on Resources along the top and then Irish Acts of Kindness. Review the list, pick what is best served for you question, submit to the volunteer and give them time to respond. We will be updating the list so if anyone has any resources they are willing to share, let me know. We will be adding the St. Mary's records as one of our members has them and is willing to do look ups. However, please pend the update. Kris **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Stockwell of Grace Methodist Church submits a formal petition to Albany demanding the removal of Mayor Elias P. Mann for failing to enforce the law against saloons opening on Sunday. The document is drawn up by attorney John T. Norton. The Governor, Charles Evans Hughes, has the power to remove the mayor of Troy according to the city charter, approved by state legislature in 1892. Before taking legal action, the Union sent the mayor a petition with 1000 signatures demanding a crackdown on Sunday law violators. Rev Stockewell says the mayor never responded. Out of 289 licensed saloons in Troy, investigators found 130 were open for business on February 2 and 171 were open on February 9. 2. Pat Connors
    3. I am looking for descendants of Patrick Flanagan who I found in the censuses in Troy NY in the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1875 & 1880. He was born ca 1825 in Ireland as was his wife, Bridget. Children listed: Mary, Michael, Helen, Hannah all born Rensselaer County. In 1880 they were living at 743 Fourth St, Troy in the same house as my gggrandparents Timothy & Catherine O'Connor. Catherine's maiden name was Flanagan and I suspect they are related in some manner. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

Thursday February 14 2008Troy Record Article 100years ago Friday February14, 1908 “According to the Record, the ancestors of the valentine were tablets on which the Roman lads carved the names of their sweethearts before dedicating them to the goddess Juno. The day has evolved as nearly the busiest day to pull practical jokes next to Aprils Fools Day, with people sending mock valentines. Postal sources estimate they have handled 100,000 valentines in the last 36 hours while selling 50,000 one cent postage stamps. Patrick J. Shea runs a stationery store and bookstore at 22 Third Street. He says Trojans aren’t buying less but cheaper. The valentines that are more costly were not purchased as much as the five, ten, twenty five or fifty cent kinds. The recent stock market panic is blamed for lower sales.
