Some Troy saloon owners have gotten around this by converting residential spaces above their bars into Sunday serving areas. They run pipes through saloon ceilings in order to have beer on tap for Sabbath customers. Only those who could be trusted will be let in. The police can’t force their way into locked saloons on mere suspicion. They have to open unlocked doors and find evidence of alcohol sales. They hit paydirt in two saloons on Fourth Street in South Troy at Patrick Murray’s place, where they confiscate a partly full beer glass as evidence. At John Dunn; s place there is no beverage found but several persons were there. Dunn and Murray are released on bail. Rev W.W.Brunk of Hedding Methodist Church calls on his congregation to take ecumenical, bipartisan action against saloons." 3. Just as a reminder, I am posting this again. You can park your car at the AOH at 375 Ontario St., and they will shuttle you to the start up point (Central & Quail). The parade ends on S. Pearl St., and there will be an AOH shuttle there, too, to return you to their parking lot. If interested, they do have music, food, etc. at the AOH that day, following the parade. 2. Sunday March 2 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years ago Monday March 2,1908 “Max Wallenstein, one of the best known Jewish citizens in Troy, comes to court today to testify at a friends naturalization hearing ,only to find his own citizenship under challenge.Wallenstein, of 92 River Street, has been exercising the rights of citizenship for nineteen years and has been prominent as a political worker ,especially in the First Ward , where he resides .Charles P.Muller ,A federal examiner in town conducting naturalization tests says Mr Wallenstein’s certification of naturalization is at present under investigation. This is news to Wallenstein who finds that the problem is an age discrepancy in official records regarding his age. It appears that no official record of the birth of Jewish children was kept in the city of his nativity in Russia. When he was 12 years of age, a census of Jewish children was ordered by the Russian government and he was recorded as 14 years old when he was in fact 12. Muller explains that the greatest precaution is now being taken to safeguard citizenship, to eliminate those who procured papers illegally and to shut out those not qualified. In today's group only one man out of 5 passes the naturalization test. One was rejected because he could not name the mayor of Troy, the governor or the president. 1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Interesting Story
    2. Therese
    3. Hi Everyone! Something very interesting happened today that I thought I'd share with everyone. I don't know if you heard on the news about the house on (Old) Mill St. in Troy today. There was a horrible mudslide from the backyard that came very close to the house, so much so that the tenants had to stay at a hotel tonight. Well that was really interesting to my family because that was my Mom and Dad's first house in Troy that they owned together. My first sister, brother, and second sister were all conceived in that house! They lived downstairs and my Mom's Mom (Alice Harrigan) lived upstairs. They were so cute about it, telling me a million stories about it. The video is on the Channel 9 website. It's dark though and it's hard to see the house. Also, I wanted to put my Dad's family names out there too. He has a very confusing family history. But the gist of it is that his relatives names are Gavin, Chapman, and McMahon. He actually told me that he knows that a lot of the McMahons do their family history a lot, so if you're on here I'll probably know who you are (we know you as which McMachon family, eg "one of the 14"). He grew up on Mann Ave, and went to St Joseph's school, and to LaSalle High School. Thanks for your info and letting me share this with you. Please keep me up with anything that you know.
