    3. Rats! Thanks, Kris, good to hear from you again! How about this...is there a list of non Catholic churches that were around in 1854? The offer is still good if you get out here, again. 3. Thank you, Rich! Is St. Peter's a Catholic church? My family was Protestant/Church of Ireland. I probably should have mentioned that in my plea for help! 2. Could you tell me what would be an appropriate donation for St. Peter's? I have two baptisms I'm seeking: one with an exact date (although the year may be off by one year) and the other, I have a month and a 2-3 year span. I know their parents were married there, by Father Shanahan, but that marriage was too early - St. Peter's Secretary told me a while back that the actual records for the marriages don't begin until 1832. She said that marriages were performed before that, but the paper records were a little later. Kitty **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. 2. Kathleen
    3. Donna, I have the four volumes of marriage records for St. Mary's Church in Troy which was founded in 1844 and I checked for your great grandparents and found no record. Do you have any idea where in Troy they lived? There was one Catholic Church older than St. Mary's which is St. Peter's (central part of the city) founded in 1824 and they may have married there. There is also St. Joseph's in South Troy which was established around 1854. I am pretty sure you will not find a civil record at Troy City Hall since they weren't required to register with the civil authorities until around 1880. You could try dropping a line (with a donation) to St. Peter's Church, 2300 Fifth Avenue, Troy NY 12180 or St. Joseph's Church, 3rd & Jackson Streets, Troy NY 12180. I have heard that the secretary at St. Peter's is pretty good about looking up records but the same cannot be said for the secretary at St. Joseph's, but it's worth looking into. Good luck in your search. 3. I may well be on the wrong mailing list for this, and if so I include my apologies. Can anyone tell me about the current situation at St. Brigid's Church in Watervliet, the parish of my KEENAN, LYNCH and HENNESSY families. I found some help there a number of years ago, but then my welcome wore out and I had several painful phone conversations with the guardian of the records - "...they are in the basement and no I will not go there for you ...." Then it got personal. Is St. Brigid's still open, has there been a change in personnel or attitude, was it just me or what. 2. Donna K. Vaughn
    3. It's that time of year again! Local TIGS will be having nominations of officers at our next meeting on April 10, with elections in May, and new officers taking their roles in June. It has been my honor to have been elected as the very first President of TIGS, and to have served as your President for each of the past three years. Kristin Ayotte, our Vice President, has expressed an interest in running for President this upcoming year, and I will be nominating her at the April meeting. All offices are open for nomination. Here are the interested parties so far: President: Kristin Ayotte Vice Present: VACANT Secretary: Kay Brearton Treasurer: Cathy McGrath Webmaster: Jeanne Keefe List Administrator: VACANT Project Manager: Bill McGrath You may nominate yourself or anyone else, for any of the above offices. According to our charter: "All officers must be dues paying members of TIGS and be able to attend meetings in Troy." In regard to voting, full members (dues paying members) are eligible to vote in the elections. There are some local members, other than the current officers, who have been quite active and regular attendees, and I urge them (or anyone else!) to run for any of these offices. Please, if you have an interest, contact me, either on or off list, and I will be happy to explain the duties of each office. Also, you can refer to the charter at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytigs/CharterPageNew.htm Thank you! Donna Current President of TIGS

    3. This is before vital records began, so the only ways to find her would possibly be City Directories (though they often did not mention female deaths), or by searching probate and land records for each county. Or, church/cemetery records if you happen to know the church. 3. You are such a sweetie!! Yes, Elizabeth Lightbown was born Eliza Jane Browne. She was the first member of the Browne family to come to the US. I figure she would have immigrated around1847 when she would have been around 20, as she didn't come with the rest of her family in 1852. She first shows up in Stillwater, and soon becomes involved with a handsome (I imagine) military man whom she eventually marries. How she managed to be in Stillwater is a mystery, at this point (but that's for another time). What is disturbing is that she is with her sister Mary and brother-in-law, Charles Davis, without her 2 young boys, ages 9 and 6. I found a distant cousin who has done an indepth research on Eliza. He sent me some copies. They include legal papers with Charles' Davis and his dad, Alvin Davis' signatures as witnesses! After being with Mary Ellen in 1860, Eliza dies (my cousin thinks "female" troubles) in a place called "Hidden's or Kidden's Corner". This is written in her dad's handwritting on a slip of paper that was stuck in the family Bible. He wrote an initial after the place..."N"... My cousin thinks that might mean New Jersey because Lightbown was in the Marines and would have been at maritime ports. I think, if she were dying she might not be far from her sister, and would have stayed in NY. But I have searched both states and have not come up with a similar name. I should take another look. Aren't mysteries great? The real motivation for me right now is to get a hold of some legal documents, and if I'm lucky, I'll find the real spelling of where Mary Ellen was born. No one seems to know where "Rosena" is. My gx4-grandfather was obviously literate but not a very good speller :-} You're a doll to be helping me like this! 3. For place names in New York and New Jersey, I would recommend Vasiliev, Ren, From Abbotts to Zurich: New York State placenames Syracuse: Syracuse University Press, 2004, xviii, 258 p New Jersey Local names, Trenton: New Jersey Dept of Transportation, 1995, 69 p. Also, check the local library for historical atlases since more place names than we think have been changed over the years. Good luck.
