Came across this in the local Advertiser: City of Rensselaer has established a Renss. City History Research Center, at the Renss. Public Library, 810 Broadway, Renss. City Historian is Charles Semowich 449-4756 (AC 518), email is semowich@att.net They are looking for old newspapers from Renss. including Greenbush and Bath, and old scrapbooks related to the city, which they would like to photocopy for their center. Tom is very helpful, he did some research for me and did a great job, and timely. I met him when he and his wife came to Jeanne's presentation on Troy, which was at the Renss. Co. The result has been that anarchists have gathered in America from every nation under heaven. Ours is the only country where they are not hunted down by the police and prevented from expounding their vicious views. The result of this widespread dissemination of anarchist literature is seen by the recent developments in this country. A President was shot, riots have occurred,a priest was stricken down while saying mass, a police chief has been attacked in his own home. It is time that this condition of things should be stopped. America was, it is true, founded as a haven for the downtrodden of every kind and country. But the founders were men who desired a new home, not to permit rapine and murder , but to live lives of usefulness and worship God without let or hindrance. Now that the nation has been built, its preservation is essential. Its freedom must not be turned into license. Inflammatory speeches , acts of hatred and doctrines that would tear down the mighty structure which our fathers built must be prevented at any cost. The Record believes Roosevelt is right to refuse the mails to this paper and says If however there is any technicality through which his argument is faulty, the legislatures at Washington, should immediately pass another act which will cover the point and abolish for all time the widespread circulation of a journal so destructive to American liberty. Monday March 24, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoTuesday March 24, 1908 “The La Questione Sociale an Italian language weekly published paper in Paterson, New Jersey, which has 30,000 readers has allegedly advocated the killing of American soldiers and the use of dynamite against enemies of anarchy. President Roosevelt wrote the publishers are of course enemies of mankind and every effort should be strained to hold them accountable for an offense far more infamous than that of an ordinary murderer. Anarchists are the terrorists of their time and recently in 1901 a self styled anarchist , Leon Czolgosz, assassinated Us President William MCKinley. Roosevelt ordered that the Justice Department take action to deny mail distribution to the paper and The Record agreed with that saying ‘the order will commend itself to every lover of this nation. The fear throughout this country lest the free speech of every citizen shall be abridged has permitted threats and doctrines to be expressed which are little less than treason. **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. A reminder that there will be a meeting this month BUT it will be on the second Thursday, the 10th instead of the usual third Thursday. The meeting will be at 6:30 at the Redfront in Troy. Meeting is necessary as annual nominations are in process and election of officers pending. As Donna already posted we are looking for nominations for officers for the upcoming year. We have none for VP or List Administrator and only one for each of the other offices. We are asking that local folks consider more active participation in the upcoming year and one of the ways to do that is to hold an office. You can nominate yourself or be nominated by another paid member. While on the subject, Lizette reports that we have 202 list members now, that is fantastic. Of that about 50% are paid members. For $10 a year you get our very informative newsletter and become a voting member of the organization. In the last year we used the membership money to buy a laptop and a set of the St. Mary's records to donate to the Troy Libary. We are still looking to purchase a scanner, so every paid member is a step towards that goal. Please consider this small fee and become a paid member this year. Please send any agenda items to Donna in advance of the meeting. Kris **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. Sorry it took so long to respond to your request. I have checked all the spellings for the O'Brien surname for a marriage in St. Mary's between O'Brien and Lynch and was unable to locate any record for you. St. Mary's was founded in 1843 but St. Peter's is the first Catholic church in Troy founded in 1827. St. Peter's has an e-mail address and you might check with them - churchdenise@aol.com There is only one Catholic Church in Green Island - St. Joseph's and it was founded in 1868. It was recently merged with Catholic churches in Watervliet. The oldest Catholic Church in Watervliet would be St. Patrick's founded in 1840 and is not far from the boundary with Green Island so before there was a church in Green Island, they may have worhsipped in Watervliet. I wish you success in your search.
