Just cack from Florida, and see this old email. My g.g.grandmother(paternal) was Julia Maloney Coffey....she had a brother, Timothey. She would have come over here circa 1840's or 50's. Her husband, my g.g.grandfather was naturalized in 1852 in Albany, New York. Monday March 31, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoTuesday March 31, 1908 “Tibbits cadets 31st anniversary is held at the Rensselaer Hotel. William Badger is honored(1837-80) and he served as an officer in the Second New York Infantry Regiment and the Griswold Light Calvery during the Civil War, earning the rank of brevet rank of major general for his bravery and leadership. One of the featured speakers General James H. Lloyd talks on the National Guard of Today. He recalls a lack of preparedness at the outbreak of the Spanish American War of 1898 and fears the US is no better off today. He estimates it would take 3 months to mobilize sufficient troops to repel a Japanese invasion of the west coast.” Photo of the day Troy Record Monday March 31, 2008 1953 photo of School 16 eighth grade graduation. My brother Jack married Mary Alice Ryan whose father, Ray (Pinkie) Ryan was a minor league player who played with the Albany Senators. Ray was the owner of Ray Ryan's Unique Cafeteria on Fourth Street across from the Post Office and later Ray Ryan's Homestead Restaurant on Second Avenue at 108th St. where there is a McDonald. I am not related to Johnny Evers but I can tell you that some of his family is still in the area. My son went to school at LaSalle Institute in Troy with a Mark Evers who is directly related, played some great college baseball for St. Bonaventure's and had been looked at by some of the Major League teams (he may have even been picked up for a short time). His dad who is also named Mark is currently town supervisor for the Town of North Greenbush but I don't remember if he ever played ball as I was not familiar with them at that time.
I'm 75 years old and a former minor league baseball player in the Chicago White Sox farm system. My father, Tom Duffy, was born on Nov. 30, 1874 in Troy and played semi-pro baseball most of his life. In 1917dad played left field for the Logan Squares in Chicago and they beat the Chicago White Sox in 5 games out of 8 after the Sox beat the NY Giants in the World Series. Recently I finished reading the best book on a period of baseball I've ever read, written by Cait Murphy, a woman and one of the best sports writers I've ever read. The title is "Crazy '08".It's the story of the 1908 major league baseball season, wherin the Chicago Cubs won the World Series with a double play combination that has gone down in history as "Tinkers to Evers to Chance". Johnny Evers was born in Troy, NY on July 21, 1881 and in 1900 he was a collar shipper in Troy. Cait Murphy brings out a very interesting point in the book when she said that Troy, NY sent 32 men to the major leagues. surely a record relative to Troy's size. Two of them, Johnny Evers and King Kelly, made it to the Baseball Hallof Fame while another 5 who played for the old Troy team have plaques in Cooperstown. I have a fond memory for Johnny Evers because he was only 115 pounds when he played for the Chicago Cubs. I was 120 pounds when I pitched for the Wisconsin Rapids White Sox in 1950. One of the sports writers up there used to call me "the blade" because he said they couldn't see me when I turned sideways. Hope some of you enjoy Cait Murphy's book. I'd like to know if any of you are descendants of any of the 32 Troy Major Leaguers. Gerry Duffy
One thing you might want to explore in this area children often attended Catholic Schools that were affiliated with their ethnic idenity. Not neccessarily the one close to their home. Various churches were Irish, Polish and even German. I have a friend who went to a Catholic school in Cohoes and they spoke what she calls French - Canadian. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan Griffiths" <jan@snowonder.ca> To: <ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 08, 2008 10:58 AM Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] School Records in Troy > Hi: > > My grandfather lived in Troy from his birth in 1891 until 1913 when he > immigrated to Montreal, Canada. > > Would anyone know if it's possible to: > > a) locate the name of the school he may have attended; > or > > b) obtain any type of school records? > > He lived at 2204 Seventh Avenue in 1901, 1902 and 1903. Most likely he attended St. Peters Academy, that would have been the closest for him. Kristin **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food. (http://food.aol.com/dinner-tonight?NCID=aolfod00030000000001)

How can I obtain a copy of a birth certificate for my Grandfather born in Troy in 1891? I have the certificate number. Thanx, Jan.
The following update on the status of the Rensselaer County Marriage Index project will be of interest to list members. A. Currently the following volumes of the Marriage Index with their 32,000 names are on-line on the Troy Irish Genealogy website www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ Vol. 1 5,000 marriages with 10,000 Names January 1908-April 1913 Vol. 2 5,000 marriages with 10,000 Names April 1913-July 1918 Vol. 3 2,000 marriages with 4,000 Names May 1918-April 1920 Vol. 4 & 5 4,000 marriages with 8,000 Names April 1920-January 1924 B. Photocopies of documents on file OR of the record in the marriage book for these 16,000 marriages, are available from the County Clerk's Office for a fee of $5.00. Separate request forms for EACH Volume with the necessary instructions can be printed from the TIGS website. C. TIGS workers and volunteers are now working on the index for Volumes 6 and 7 which has another 4,000 marriages and 8,000 names. To date all the Grooms names have been scanned and pdf files of the scanned pages are being sent to those volunteers who indicated they were interested in data entry for this phase of the project. The Brides names still have to be scanned and as usual we can always use help in the scanning process. Also, if there are other individuals on the TIGS mailing list who may be interested in doing some data entry work for this project, please email me off list at seamus@nycap.rr.com to see what is involved. D. The first 7 volumes of the Marriage Index were easy to work with as ALL of the important data elements were posted on the index pages. The index for Vol. 8, however, is a different story. Only the Grooms and Brides names, along with a page number, was posted to the index. Two examples of the posting are: NAMES OF GROOM PAGE Zimmerman C. Leslie 53 Zapp Donald 128 So, before we can scan these pages, a look-up of the page number in the Marriage Book itself must be made to obtain the marriage number and the date of the marriage for each name on the index. We will need local area volunteers to help with this index as it will take some time to look up the 4,000 names. Photocopies of all the pages in the Vol. 8 index have already been made and now we need volunteers to post the marriage number and the marriage date to the photocopied index pages. If anyone would like to help with these lookups, please email me off list at seamus@nycap.rr.com . Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY
Hi: My grandfather lived in Troy from his birth in 1891 until 1913 when he immigrated to Montreal, Canada. Would anyone know if it's possible to: a) locate the name of the school he may have attended; or b) obtain any type of school records? He lived at 2204 Seventh Avenue in 1901, 1902 and 1903. I understand that the building no longer exists. He lived at 2260 Sixth Avenue in 1904, 1905 and 1906. I understand it is now called Old Sixth Avenue. The family was Roman Catholic. Would anyone know what Roman Catholic schools might have been in the vicinity at that time? I am assuming he would have attended a neighbourhood school. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. Jan.
