    1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] 1864 Ireland Birth Index
    2. Pat Connors
    3. The Ireland GenWeb Project is currently transcribing the 1864 Ireland Birth Index. The A's went online last month and now the B's are online up to BULGER, Mary. More are going online every day as the pages are being transcribed. The Index is part of a two step process to find a birth record. The Index lists names and registration districts, plus the volume and page where the record is located. You can then either order it from Ireland or find it on an Family History Library film. You can get all the film numbers here: http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/RegDistricts.htm Currently the FHL has the 1864 birth records in their database that can be search on their website at: http://www.familyhistory.org Go to the search boxes on the left side of their homepage, enter full name, life event-birth, year-1864, year range-exact year, country-Ireland. Results will give parents' names, exact place of birth, source (FHL film number where records are found). Using the Index, you can get the volume and page numbers. Using both resources, will help you identify the correct record before ordering it from Ireland through the General Register Office at: http://www.groireland.ie/ The IGW website is located at: http://www.irelandgenweb.com/ Please check out the whole page. We need volunteers to take over some of the county websites, to help with the Surname Registry and to help transcribe the birth index. If you would like to help, please contact me off list. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, Ireland IGW Country Coordinator http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

I am the granddaughter of Michael E Sweeney who lived at 683 Burden Ave. in Troy with his family. I always heard him tell the story of how his mother Ellen (Brady) and father John died within days of each other in July of 1897. He always said that his mother was working hard doing laundry in the heat of the day on the second floor and had heat stroke. What was listed on her death certificate was Thermic convulsions. She died two days after collapsing and my great grandfather died the day of her funeral. My grandfather was orphaned at 16. He also always told us the story of going down his backyard to the shore of the Hudson and swimming to Watervliet so I know he lived in South Troy. Coincidentally, a century later I met and married an Italian from South Troy by way of Naples. What are the chances of that ? I have found other evidence that a Patrick Sweeney lived at 685 Burden Ave. These are two buildings (still standing) ! **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? 3. Hi Carol, I think the difficulty you are having is with Office 2007 which has implemented new formats for documents and Excel Files. There are stand-alone readers available from Microsoft for the new versions. BUT, the good news is that you can choose to continue using the Office XP (2003) formats if you so choose. This is what I have done as I am not in an working office environment. The 'File' command has been replaced by the 'Office' Circle button in the upper left hand corner of Office 2007 applications. Create a document and choose 'Save As' from the Office Button. Change the file type to 'Office 97-2003' and your friends will be able to open and modify the documents and send them back to you if need be. I think this setting will 'stick' as your default setting for file saves until you choose to change it. Do this in Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. Let me know if it does not 'stick' and I'll research further as I set this up last June and my mid-term memory fails me at present. 3. I have been with Vista for a few months and much preferred XP - also do you find that if you try to send something to someone with XP unless they download something onto their computer they cannot accept Vista??? Plus I am having a great amount of difficult with Excel on the new Vista. Many changes and not for the better. -----Original Message----- From: ny-troy-irish-gensoc-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ny-troy-irish-gensoc-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bradford Miter Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2008 9:10 AM To: ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] test I've been on Vista with a new computer purchased last June. Can't rebuild the darned index. But, yours probably will run OK forever.
