Interesting side note: Cornelius Collins, Supt of NY State prisons was indicted a few years later, ca 1912, for taking bribes from my great grandfather's brother, who owned the CP Boland Construction Co. so that Boland could get the contract to build the Great Meadow state prison at Comstock. Mysteriously (wink wink), the evidence disappeared from the state evidence room and they were acquited. A very stupid bookkeeper had hidden the money going to Collins in the payrolls as going to day laborers with names like Whitney, Vanderbuilt, and Corning. CP Boland Co also built that beautiful D and H Bldg that you see from 787 that SUNY uses now. -Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: Joyce052@aol.com<mailto:Joyce052@aol.com> To: ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com<mailto:ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 20, 2008 6:07 AM Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Collins,Parker,Barnes,Hughes ,School #15 Thursday April 10 ,2008Troy Record Article 100years ago Friday April 10 ,, 1908 “Delegates from Troy attend the districts Republican convention and pick 2 delegates to go to the national convention on June 16th in Chicago. Thanks for the update, I have booked marked the site and shared the info with extended family. Of course I was pleased to see my GG Uncle Richard Buckley's name inscribed on the monument. jeanne <bostonirish@sprintmail.com> wrote: I've enjoyed the stories of the baseball players as well. My dad (now 86) can recite the Evers to Tinker to Chance play in great detail. Dad's grandmother & aunts; Johanna, Bertha, & Nora Minehan lived at 356 First St and I believe the Evers family also lived there for a while. We also have a connection to the Troy baseball: Daniel J. Minehan. He is "somehow" related to our Minehan clan only we have not closed the gap yet. Daniel began his career with the Buffaloes. He also played with Glen Falls and Minneapolis in the Western League. He led the league for a season in batting average and won an award of a silver bat. He also played with the Louisville Nationals and Paterson NJ teams. At his retirement he was an umpire with the New York State League. His decendants remain in the Troy area. In fact an interesting monument to Troy baseball can be found at: http://www.ballparkreviews.com click on "places" and you'll see a monumnet for Troy Ny it will show the photos. There is another site his relative found about Troy baseball , I will send that out as soon as he gets it to me. Hi baseball fans. I have my own little posting re: Troy and baseball: My grandfather, Mike Sweeney, born in Troy in 1880, was orphaned in 1896. Both of his parents died within days of each other at 683 Burden Ave in South Troy. My grandfather then went to a military school along the Hudson to work his way through high school. He then played baseball and always talked about "the year we won the pennant." He has a pin, now in my possession that reads " H. R. League, Po'keepsie N.Y. 1904." I don't know what level of league this was but I do know that he traveled and played in Geneva, NY where he met my grandmother. Here is where the story gets romantic. When the baseball team came to town the local girls would prepare box lunches for the players. Each lunch would have an assigned name to it. When my grandmother, no shrinking violet, saw my grandfather...all 5'3" of blue-eyed Irishman...she traded her box lunch with some other player's name on it for the box lunch with his name on it. The rest, as they say, is history. They married in 1911 and lived in Rochester, NY where my grandfather became a very successful paving contractor.
