Monday April 28 ,, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoTuesday April 28,1908 “Angry Italian laborers attack a work site because they are incensed over the action of one of their number in charging exorbitant rates for their provisions. The store owner, who is not on the premises at the time, is a ‘padrone’ who helped most of the men find work on the project(near Waterford, near the barge canal) for a price. It is the complaint of the foreigners that in order to secure a position with the construction companies, five dollars must be paid to the padrone,who conducts a general supply store. This would be about 50-100$ in todays money. After employment has been furnished the laborers are compelled to trade at the store , and for failure to do so they are dismissed. They say the proprietor has been constantly raising prices of produce and groceries until they are almost beyond the reach of the laboring classes.The record calls it a race riot, with the laborers hitting some of the carpenters with rocks.
