Hi List, There are two films for the Troy Daily News that the LDS has: Vital Records appearing in the Troy Daily Times, 1861-1881, film # 143397, item 6-8 Vital Records printed in the Troy Dail Times, 1875 - 1881, film 1035941, item 6 Has anyone used them? Are they of good quality? TIA, Rich Greer, SC
Amy, Sorry, I could find no record of your Sweeneys in St. Mary's records. If they lived on Burden Avenue, they would have attended St. Michael's as you indicated or even St. Joseph's. You might want to drop a line to both these churches to see if they can help you. St. Joseph's is just beginning to be transcribed, but unfortunately, the folks at St. Michael's have not allowed ACGS to come in and copy the records. The Index is now online for surnames beginning with A, B, C, D, E, and F. We are up to L in our transcriptions and when I get some more time, I hope to get more letters online. If you submitted a surname to the Surname Registry in June and it is not online, it is because it is floating around in cyberspace. We moved to a new server and suddenly our form wasn't working. But now all is well and it is fixed. So I apologize if yours is lost. Please resubmit another one and we will include it in our next update. Also, I had a note from someone who is trying to contact a person who listed a surname because they may be related. If your email changed, submit a new form and put 'change' in the field where you want the change. You can find links to both the Surname Registries and the 1864 Ireland Birth Index at: http://www.irelandgenweb.com/ -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

Hi Kay. I was very interested to hear about the information you have about St Mary's in Troy. Could you check and see if there is any listing for Ellen B. Sweeney and John Sweeney? They both died in July of 1897 and were members of St. Michael's church in South Troy. (That is the one that burned down on the hill I think.) They lived on Burden Ave. Thanks for any information you have. They were my great-grandparents. Kay, the lookups are taking place on the Rensselaer County Message board which is gatewayed to the NYRensse mailing list. Maybe on the list, you could mention the limitations of this research. Thanks. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

Bill, I finished what you gave me for volume 8. I came across a problem with the index. The clerk entering the names(mainly 1927) entered on the index Last name, Middle name or initial and then First name. I corrected the index sheets that I had. The other volunteers should take note. List members may be interested in the status of the Troy Irish Genealogy Project of automating the 10 Volume Rensselaer County Marriage Index. 1. Volumes 1 to 5, with their 32,000 names, are currently on-line on the TIGS website, www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ 2. Volumes 6 and 7, with their 8,000 names, are now being transcribed. All of the Grooms records have been data entered, proof read and analyzed for errors. About 75% of the Brides names have already been transcribed. When the remaining Brides files are finished and analyzed for errors, the Grooms and Brides names will then be combined by the marriage number, and hopefully, by August, will be put on-line on the TIGS website. 3. Preliminary work has started on Volume 8, with it's 4,000 names. As previously mentioned, the index pages for this volume do not show the marriage number and the date of the marriage. Several local TIGS volunteers have already started to look up the names in the Marriage Book itself, to obtain this information and post it to the photocopy of the marriage index page. Once that work has been done, the index page can then be scanned and sent to a transcriber. 4. The final two index books, Volumes 9 and 10, are similar to Volume 8, in that the index page does not show all the necessary information and look-ups in the Marriage Book will be required to obtain the missing data before the pages can be transcribed. The following comments about the marriage index may be of interest to family researchers. Having worked on the first 7 volumes of the index, I have observed that, in many cases, the place of birth or residence of the Bride and Groom and even the place of the marriage itself, is OUTSIDE of Rensselaer County and even OUTSIDE New York State. As an example, a record I was looking at the other day had the Groom residing and born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania., the Bride residing in Detroit, Michigan, born in Jamestown, Pennsylvania and the wedding taking place in Troy. In looking up several family names on the index, I have also found prior marriages for the individuals that were not known to me. So don't discount checking out the index because it is Rensselaer County and your relatives didn't live there. You never know what you will find! Monday May 12 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoTuesday May 12 ,1908 “ Mary McGivraey Kirkpatrick is suing William Bayer ,a local lumber merchant, for attacking her during a demonstration outside a collar factory 1906. Bayer was arrested at the scene. In court today, Kirkpatrick, who is suing for $5,000 (close to 100.000 in todays currency) testifies she was walking along First Street when she was seized by the throat and thrown to the ground.. Her account is corroborated by relatives and policemen who witnessed the incident. Bayers attorney , William J. Roche, contends his client was actually a good samaritan, intervening to prevent Kirkpatrick from throwing rocks at a delivery wagon trying to unload at the factory.
