We have always wondered what prompted Timothy's move to Troy, New York since upon immigration from Tipperary through New York he had settled with his wife Ellen McCarthy in the Mansfield, Rhode Island area. I am now questioning if perhaps these two O'Brien men were cousins or even uncles. Does anyone have either of these names in their genealogy? At River Street Church of Christ, Rev Cecil J. Armstrong ask his congregation to envision a ‘ City without Saloons’. Armstrong anticipates 3 great benefits: less crime, conserving its best assets, homes and young men, and less corrupt politicians since if politicians cannot treat voters to a drink Troy will have much purer politics.” Friday May 23, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSaturday May 23, 1908 “The state legislature is currently meeting in special session to look at a proposed bill That would introduce a direct part primary in this state. My heavens, finally a relative turns up in the Troy Record - maybe -! -----Original Message----- Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Carrington, Powers, Hull, Marsh, Addington, Spotten, Beattie, Fossmire <snip> Three Lansingburgh men have been arrested for stealing shirts from a neglected freight car on the 114th Street side of the tracks. An unidentified citizen finds a stash of shirts under a porch and reports it to the police. Investigators determine the shirts were taken from a Boston and Maine freight car.The investigation leads to Frank Spotton, a brushmaker, discovered in a saloon with 4 new shirts in a bag. He tries to convince police they are seconds he bought , but then confesses, telling about his accomplices,William Beattie and Calvin Fossmire. They all plead not guilty, Spottens confession notwithstanding. To burglary and grand larceny charges. <snip> But, the Frank Spotten, mentioned in the article does not appear to be my Third Cousin Twice Removed! My Frank Spotten was 59 years old in 2008 and his occupation in the 1900 and 1910 censuses was City Detective. I wonder if he had a thing or two to say to the thief down at the jail - sullying his good name....indeed! Brad Miter

    2. Thank you. It has been years of work, but fascinating, challenging, and fun! And I met so many wonderful people in doing it. And the story just keeps going. Another researcher recently came forward who thinks his wife's family stems from a Bally evictee who settled in Lawrence, MA, and whose children then moved on to Colorado and California. The book is an account of the rent strikers in Ballykilcline, County oscommon,?who were evicted in 1847 and '48 and "assisted" to New ork by forced emigration. My book considers the social, economic, and political onditions in Ireland before the Famine that led to the strike and then locates cluster of the evicte es in Rutland, Vermont, and follows their lives and the ommunity they built there for about 20 years as the marble industry boomed. Some of them, for instance, took part in labor actions in Rutland and lost heir homes a second time. Some of them prospered as Vermont farmers; some of hem went farther west -- to join an earlier settlement of Kilglass Parish eople in LaSalle County, ILL, or to go on to the Minnesota frontier before it ecame a state. One family had a child kidnapped by Indians. I found evidence inking one or two men to the Fenians, who attempted to invade Canada several imes during the 1860s. A number of the men fought in the Civil War. One man rom Ballykilcline was a suspect in the murder of landlord Denis Mahon of trokestown. Evidence in the story also suggests, that as their original tory-teller Robert Scally (The End of Hidden Ireland) suggested, there may ave been?an "underground?market" for their Crown passages across the tlantic.?The story focuses on about a dozen families for whom mini-profiles are rovided.?It also mentions Albany and Troy in several places. Anyone who had ancestors from Famine Ireland likely will be interested in the nformation about conditions in both Ireland and the U.S. in the middle 19th entury. And genealogists may be interested in the records tapped to produce his story.
