My great-great-grandparents were John O'Brien and Johanna Shea/Shay, both born in Ireland although exact location is unknown. One or both of them may have died in Ireland. I did locate a Mrs. Johanna O'Brien, housekeeper, who lived on Fourth Street in South Troy. She is buried in an unmarked grave in St. Joseph's Cemetery. She is buried there alone and she is the sole plot owner so I am unable to determine for certain if she is Johanna Shea O'Brien. Known children (all believed to be born in Ireland) were: Catherine, b. prior to 1850, married Jeremiah McNamara/Mack Johanna, b. 1850(?), married John Joseph Mangan (my great-grandparents) Dennis, b. 1852(?), married Catherine Clancy "Brother", (first name unknown), b. 18??. Wife's name unknown. 1 known son named John. ************************* This young John O'Brien (son of Brother) was most likely the fellow who served as pallbearer for his aunt, Catherine Clancy O'Brien, in 1923. The latest I find him in Troy is February, 1938 when he served as pallbearer for his first cousin, Elizabeth Mack Kelley. This particular John O'Brien was alluded to in a previous post...just wanted to clarify that he is in my O'Brien family. M. Alice Mangan Okatie, SC
Thanks Gerry, I doubt there is a connection, but I'm keeping you in my notes anyway, just in case. There are so many names the same as in my family: O'Brien, Duffy (Duffin) and Burke that I think it's worth it. My info on the O'Brien's comes from the birth certificates of relatives born in Anacarty, Donohill, Tipperary. My Phillip Ryan married a Mary O'Brien who I know had a sister named Josephine but no idea of the other siblings. She was the daughter of Timothy O'Brien and Catherine Costello. Mary was born on 8/11/1834 and the name Lackenacormack is in there somewhere which I believe was an address??? When I saw that Timothy Ryan the son of Phillip and Mary was attended by two pall bearers at his funeral named John O'Brien and William O'Brien I immediately thought there might be a relation. It would explain Tim's relocation to Troy in the first place. Wish I could be of more help. I truly hoped the descendants of both William and John were on the list and might have given me more info. Sunday May 25 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years ago Monday May 25 ,1908 “Evidence mounts in the trial of Frank W. Carrington with the testimony of accountant Justus H Davis saying Carrington could have altered records by dissolving earlier entries with acid. This statement is challenged by defense attorney Lewis E Griffith who says that would have left a yellow stain on the page.Davis also testifies ,in the case of taxpayer M.L.Stevens, the stub and the bill don’t match, implying Carrington destroyed the original and forged a new one. Attorney Griffith says their was a $10,000.00 shortage in Carrington predecessor’s administration and no warrant was sworn out for him.” Photo of the day Troy Record Friday May 25, 2008 1910 photo of a trolley on Pawling Avenue with Emma Willard School in the background.
