Friday June 13, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSaturday June 13 ,, 1908 “A Troy man, Thomas Foley,a house painter, who married the former Mrs. Emma Quest nine years ago and with whom he has 2 children in addition to her Quest children, gravely wounds her and kills himself. He was living in a Hutton St boarding house since their estrangement. She lived at 920 Fifth Avenue .Despite a restraining order issued, Foley had made several appearances at the house threatening to kill his wife and/or Superintendent Nathaniel Walker of the Mohawke –Hudson Humane Society who had testified against him in a child support trial, where he was ordered to pay 5$ a week to his family. He appears at the house while his wife is out on an errand and asks his step daughter, Emma, to get his wife back to the house for her child support money. When Mrs Foley returns he asks her to accompany him to the stone bridge on Hollow Road, she refuses and he pulls a revolver and shoots his wife in the head and then in the finger as she raises her hand. His stepdaughter, Emma Quest runs for her bedroom as he turns the gun toward her, the shot misses as she crashes thru her bedroom window and lands in the back yard. She rushes around the front and gets some neighbors, when they enter the house they find Thomas on the floor ,he having shot himself in the temple. The neighbors speak very highly of Mrs Foley to the Record reporter, and the hospital statement states that she cannot recover. Thursday June 12 ,2008Troy Record Article 100years ago Friday June12 ,, 1908 “Following the Legislatures approval of the Agnew –Hart bills, the future of horse racing is in question. Woodlawn Park, Island Park are expected to be idle this summer while the Troy Speedway Association is deliberating whether to scrap its summer trotting meet at Rensselaer Park. The association used to sell an exclusive pool selling franchise at the rate of $150.00 per race($2000.00 in todays money). The organizers believe without the sale of these they would not be able to meet their expenses. One of the jurors in the Carrington trial , Erza P.Irish has killed himself. The Record writer notes its probably because his 15,000 peach tree farm bore little or no fruit the last 3 years, which preyed on his mind. Carol, I only visited the library once many years ago, because I live a distance from it. However if you Google New York State Library, Albany, New York, and get the home page of the library, you will find a list of their extensive collection. Tuxedo Park is in Rockland County New York, and I know that the library in New City, NY has a very good genealogy section. I met someone from the county at a conference last year and I think they had a lot of material printed up from their resources. Perhaps you might give the library a call and find out .You could also contact the clerk of Tuxedo Park. Sorry I am not more help. Pat

I was wondering if you could give me more information on this New York State Library. Is this someplace you can write or go on line to and request a search for records for a fee? I have been searching for my ggrandparents wedding certificate for over 40 years and was just informed they married in the Tuxedo Park, NY area around 1895. I would love to get this info. Do you have any experience with the Library and what they offer? I am hoping it is the marriage certificate of my grandparents, Edward D. Hogan, and Blanche Polvent. Edward lived in Waterford and worked in Troy. Blanche lived in Cohoes and did collar work for a Troy company. I have looked for many years in all the usual places for their marriage record, to no avail. In cleaning out my records, I found a note written on a pink notice with New York State Library letterhead. This note contained my grandparents' names in my handwriting, and the above information in a different handwriting. I know I visited Albany on a research trip many years ago and was helped by a volunteer genealogist in the Library. Perhaps she is the one who got this information for me. It is so long ago that I cannot remember more. However I cannot fathom why I didn't follow this up.-except perhaps at the time I just ruled this out as a possibility because it was out of the immediate vicinity of where I knew the couple lived. An original supporter of Agnew –Hart, Sen Otto G. His doctor reports he’s had a mild collapse but will be there to vote on the 11th.The state then approves the bill to ban gambling by a margin of 1 vote. Area senator Frank M Boyce,A Democrat representing Rensselaer Count, votes against the measure. Sen Grady, Democratic minority leader , Sen Owen Cassidy, Republican from Schulyer Co, also weigh in. My GGgrandmother Johanna Ryan (daughter of James Ryan/ Bridget Duett) lived in West Troy and was born in Adare Parish Limerick Dec 1846. When I searched the Missing Friends advertisements from the Boston Pilot for the keyword "Adare" I saw a Patrick Ryan from Adare living in West Troy in 1863 looking for his nephew Pat Ryan. -thoughht I would share with regards to the below Pat Ryan- but that's a tough name to sort out. -Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: Lois<mailto:lantana@npgcable.com> To: ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com<mailto:ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2008 1:13 PM Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Catherine RYAN Rebecca Rector; regarding your inquiry about Powell/Ryan- you may already have this-- On the 1920 census Catherine and Henry RYAN in Watervliet--Catherine is 60 yrs. old which would give her birth year 1860-1861. Just a reminder that the names of some of the streets were changed in the late 1890's to prepare the City of Troy for the Annexation of Lansingburgh. These name changes particularly affected what was then North Troy (includes the 10th & 13th Wards). A resident of North Troy may have stayed in the same house while the name & number of the street changed. It is helpful to keep this in mind when checking addresses in the Troy City Directories. North Second Street became Fifth Avenue. North Third Street became Sixth Avenue. North Fourth Street became Seventh Avenue. (North First Street actually still exists but is an overgrown alleyway & difficult to find). There were several secondary streets whose names were changed as well at that time. M. Alice Mangan
Richard, here are some more data re my O'Brien family: 1. My paternal great grandparents were James O'Brien and Mary O'Brien, probably born in Cork or Kilkenny around the 1810s or 1820s. 2. They had 11 daughters and one son (John O'Brien) as follows: Catherine O'Brien, born May 6, 1846, married Thomas Duffy. Thomas was my grandfather. My father was Thomas Francis Duffy, born in Troy on Nov. 30, 1870. Margaret A. O'Brien, born Nov. 1847, married Patrick O'Mara Mary O'Brien, born Mar., 1849, married Henry Patterson/Pattison Alice O'Brien, born about 1850, married John Whelan Anastasia O'Brien, born Apr. 23, 1851, married John J.
