    2. Friday June 20, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSaturday June 20 ,, 1908 “Northern Budget reports the arrest of Thomas Ryan as he attempted to sell stolen goods today at a second hand shop. The goods were taken at Clarks blacksmith shop on Feb 15 and Chambers harness shop on March 20 totaling $125.00. Ryan says William Lowell , living at 188 Earl Street gave him the goods to sell. Detectives Conley and Lynch arrive at 188 Earl shortly after Lowell has turned over his paycheck to his wife , keeping only pocket change. The 31 year old Lowell confesses to them. They report he has never been in trouble before and is considered by his neighbors to be honest and hard working. His 3 children cling to him as he is arrested and his wife, already in poor health is inconsolable. He had just finished his first week at work for Abram Painton." **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? 3. That is a very sad story. I do not recall hearing this one before, although I grew up in Green Island and my grandparents and their friends frequently told us about these sorts of things that had happened in the past. I do recognize some of the names as being Green Island family names. 3. If any of these names are familiar or if anyone wants more information please let me know. I am interested to know if any of the bodies were recovered. I did contact the Troy Library and they could not find an obituary for my great aunt. The article was accompanied with a picture of my aunt and one of the other women who drowned. ----- Original Message ----- From: Left Behind To: Lynn Sent: Monday, August 11, 2008 8:45 AM Subject: Fw: Please send this back to me. From: Lynn To: Kilmelkin@yahoo.com Cc: Ravens and Magpies -- Oh my Sent: Wednesday, July 16, 2008 11:50 AM Subject: Please send this back to me. My mother really hated her name.I asked her once why her mother had named her Gertrude and she told me that her father's sister had drowned in a boat accident in the Hudson river just before she was born and so she was named after her. In the Sunday Record of June 24, 1984 they re-published the original article (April 24, 1913.) Three persons were drowned and four others had narrow escapes from the same fate this morning when the steam ferry boat, "The Ambrose," running between Troy and Green Island at Douw street went over the state dam at Middleburgh street. The Dead Miss Gertrude Breen, 17 Arch street, Green island, aged 25 years. Miss Nellie Maguire, 162 Paine street, Green island aged 35 years. Miss Mary Ahearn, 36 James street, Green Island aged 26 years. Besides the owner of the boat, William B. Curley, who resides at 20 Douw street, this city, and the three victims there were three men passengers on board, all of whom were rescued. They were: Arthur Jesmain, 168 Hudson avenue, Green Island. Albert Stebbins, who resides in a house boat anchored in the state basin. James M. Williams 156 Hudson avenue, Green Island Happened at 7:00A.M. Mr. Curley, who is captain and pilot , left the Troy side of the river at 6:15 o'clock this morning for his first trip, and because of a heavy fog decided instead of making trips every five minutes as usual to make them every fifteen minutes. Mr. Curley was making his third trip of the morning at the time of the accident and was coming across the river from Green Island to the dock at the foot of douw street where he was scheduled to arrive at 7 o'clock. Over the Dam: Mr. Curley had made the two previous trips without mishap although the fog was dense and he could not see. He usually sent the boat in a sort of half circle to the north in order to avoid getting too close the the state dam. and thought he was doing so on his third trip. There was no intimation that the boat was getting near the dam until Mr. Curley heard the noise of the rushing water. He then threw out his anchor, but it was too late, the current being very swift, and before the passengers could be warned the boat went over the dam carrying the occupants with it. (Note:Mr Curley also stated in another part of the article that he had put his compass next to the boiler and evidentially was getting an incorrect reading.) No time for Life Belts: The boat was equipped with life belts which were tied together, but there was no time to get at them. Some of them were found later floating near the dam.The ferry boat turned almost on end and a portion of the stern only is visible just south of the dam. The ware is twelve feet deep at the foot of the dam and three feet of water is running over the crest of the dam. There is shoal about ten feet from the boat where the water is only about three feet deep when the tide is out. At the time of the accident the tide was in. Caught in the Cabin: The women passengers, because of the fog, went into the cabin of the boat after boarding it at Green Island .The men were outside on deck. The women had no fear of the fog, because they had been passengers on the ferry boat almost every day except Sunday, since Mr. Curley first started to run it, and last summer had often crossed when it was very foggy. When the boat this morning struck the dam the men jumped but it is thought the women remained in the cabin and after the boat settled in the river the strong current carried their bodies down the river. As soon as the fog had lifted a number of boats were put out near the foot of the dam and attempts made to locate the bodies. Riverment stated that that the strong current would carry the bodies down the river and that they would probably be found a long distance from the dam.Captain Powers of the Third precinct station detailed Officers Trainor and McCarthy to the scene. The men put out in a boat, and near Rock Island found a hat and a kid gloves floating on the water. The had was of black straw, sailor pattern, and was trimmed with a black velvet bow. The glove was of brown kid and was for the right hand. They were evidentially the property of one of the unfortunate girls. Other information on the 3 women was that they attended St. Joseph's in Green Island. They were going to work that morning to Cluet and Peabody's. My great aunt Gertrude was engaged to be married to one of the men on the boat who survived the accident. I asked the Troy library to find Gertrude's obituary and they could not find one. I do not know whether or not her body or the bodies of the other women were found. This news item was published in national newspapers as far away as Texas. One last sad note,I discovered on a census document that Gertrude's mother (my great grandmother) had five children and the record showed that only two had survived:my grandfather and Gertrude. With the death of my great aunt she had lost 4 of her five children. ____________________________________________________________ Hotel pics, info and virtual tours. Tuesday History has already been made by the seating of Lucy M. Clark of Utah as the first female voting delegate to a Republican Convention. She is an ardent woman's suffragist and although chosen as an alternative , moves up when a delegate cant make it to Chicago. Wednesday 491 votes are needed to get a first –ballot victory. Sen Henry Cabot Lodge speaks and when he says the words Theodore Roosevelt the convention erupts into an ecstatic uproar which lasts for almost an hour.Thursday Taft gets 702 delegate votes on the first ballot. He has served as Gouvernor of the Philippine Islands and Secretary of War under Roosevelt, but has never before run for elective office, rising thru the judicial ranks.. A plank in the Republican platform that is controversial is the judicial practice of issuing injunctions against striking labor unions for violating the Sherman Anti Trust act. It is included .Friday- the Vice President will be James Schoolcraft Sherman of Utica, NY, who wins 816 delegate votes on the first ballot. Former Lieutenant Gov Timothy L. Woodruff places Sherman's name in nomination noting that no Republican ticket has been defeated when a New York man was on it, save once and that was when the opposing party was bright enough to put a New York man at the head of their ticket(Democrat Grover Cleveland 1884) Also Sunday- an Italian Festival kicks off with a Italian band thru Troy, stopping to serenade Italian businesses on the route. The city is decorated with decorations including the colors of Italy. It will conclude tomorrow with fireworks. Also Tuesday- 57 students graduate RPI engineers at the Troy Bank Music Hall. Nine of the graduates are Troy residents, three are from Cuba. 2. VerCammen, Carol (DMH)
    3. I MUST TELL YOU ALL THAT THE Town Clerk in Tuxedo Park is a peach. She has helped me at many turns but does not have marriage records of the years for which I am searching. She directed me to Mt. Carmel Church in Tuxedo where the pastor is extremely reluctant to have anything to do with genealogy. In speaking to him at length on the phone one evening nearly two years ago he made it quite evident he didn't believe the English had ever mistreated the Irish and would have nothing to do with propagating such hogwash. For that reason he had no interest in assisting anyone in finding their roots. I have been in touch with a Chris Sonne who is the town historian as recently as two weeks ago and he advised nothing has changed with this pastor who leads me to a dead end each and every time. It is for this reason I am now hoping the State records will have what he will not look up for me. Thank you all for your kind advice and concern, please keep your fingers crossed! You can contact the village clerk by email and ask what records they might have. It's a good starting point for you, unless you've already tried this. Also, it appears Tuxedo Park is in Orange County, not Rockland. 2. Theresa was right, Tuxedo park is in Orange County, however it is right next door to Suffern, which is Rockland County, and I am pretty sure I saw records from Tuxedo Park in the New City Library, Genealogy Dept. It would certainly be worth a call there AFTER you contact the village clerk of Tuxedo park. 1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Who was Fenian John Roche of Troy?
    2. Dear TIGS Members,   In my new book, Ballykilcline Rising / From Famine Ireland to Immigrant America, there is something of a mystery involving an Irish immigrant in Troy.   His name was John Roche and he was a Fenian in the 1860s. Because I had evidence of another Kilglass Parish Roscommoner in Troy who was named Roche from a Missing Friends ad and because I had already linked a Kilglass immigrant in Rutland to the Fenians, I tried to learn whether John Roche was part of the Kilglass family mentioned in the ad. But I did not find the evidence by press time.   John Roche stood up at a Fenian convention in Philadelphia and accused Henri LeCaron, an aide to Fenian General John O’Neill, of being a British spy. And he was. But the organization did not believe Roche. It was LeCaron’s information to the British that contributed to the Fenians’ downfall when they tried to invade Canada along the New York and Vermont border in 1870.   Here’s an excerpt from my book:   Another potential link that may demonstrate Kilglass people’s concern for Ireland’s freedom came from a Fenian named John Roche[i] (LeCaron 1974, p. 66) of Troy, who rose at a Fenian meeting in Philadelphia in 1868 and publicly accused General John O’Neill’s top aide, Henri Le Caron, of spying on the organization for the British. In fact, Roche was right:  Le Caron, whose real name was Thomas Miller Beach, was perhaps the top British agent=2 0spying on the Fenians, but Le Caron had so embedded himself with O’Neill and the Fenians that the convention rejected Roche’s charges and even reprimanded him for making them. (D’Arcy 1947, p. 307) For another twenty years or so, Le Caron continued to spy on the Fenians and successor nationalist organizations like Clan-na-Gael and the Land League, at whose convention in 1883 in Philadelphia a “Brother Roach of Troy” served as a temporary secretary. (Le Caron 1974, p. 214.]   ________________________   [i] In his Fenian history, William D’Arcy identified Roche as Patrick Roche and cited LeCaron’s book as his source; the presumption is that D’Arcy, who was not directly involved and wrote years later, was mistaken in supplying Roche’s first name.  ________________________     Does anyone know who this John Roche was? Has any TIGs member studied Fenian activity in Troy?   Thanks, Mary Lee Dunn
