Among other units formed in Troy were the 30th NY Volunteer Infantry and the 21st New York Cavalry. There were others.
One more thought on this subject. In New York City Teamsters were known as "carters". It was a pretty tough business and closely regulated by the city. A license was required and heavy fines were assessed for exceeding the "speed limit". Some owned their own rigs and others rented them by the day. Some men owned several rigs and rentd them out to others. Jim O.

I believe the 91st NYSV infantry was also an Albany regiment. I use the civilwardata.com site- I think you can use a keyword search or at least a search by where they enlisted- search for nothing but Troy in the enlistment field and take note of the common units that you see. -Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: jeanne<mailto:bostonirish@sprintmail.com> To: ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com<mailto:ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 02, 2008 6:36 PM Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] James MARTIN - Civil War I know of one for sure that formed in Albany, and Troy men were a part of it; the NY 43rd Infantry one of my relatives was in Company E Jeanne in KC

Thanks to all for the input. Spent today in Troy, not much of what I needed at the library but enjoyed it any way. Made two trips from library to St. Peters on foot. Enjoyed the atmoshpere and local color. Even found a shotcut for the second trip. Met several locals all very friendly and helpful. the secretary at the church was helpful and I will followup with her. Several promising leads yielded nothing useful, but that is nothing new Wish I had more time, but happy all the same Thanks again for all the help A.E Fadden “Beware the people who moralize about great issues; moralizing is easier than facing hard facts.” - John Corry
>>In the latest TIGS newsletter there was a great discussion of finding your Civil War Ancestors. I checked out the websites suggested and found as expected that the name of my husband's relative, James Martin, is too common to identify without the unit he served in. Were there any units formed specifically in Troy? He was born in Ireland. I remember that looking at the index file cards for the Revolutionary War, that the place of birth was helpful in finding the right person. Thank you for any suggestions that will help. J. Martin<< The best known of the Troy organizations was the 2nd NY State Volunteer Infantry which was organized right at the start of the Civil War and served until it was mustered out in May of 1863 at the end of a two-year enlistment. My GrGrandfather served for the two years as a 1st Lieutenant and his brother-in-law, Col. Joseph B. Carr, was the organizing commander of the regiment and rose to Maj. General by the end of the war. You can get to some of the rosters of other regiments recruiting in the area at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyrensse/soldiers.htm. Also go to http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic/reghist/civil/infantry/civil_infIndex.h tm Where you will find the 2nd and the other regiments, 30th, 125th and 169th also in more detail with respect to the enlisted men. You will find the units just identified as 'Infantry Regiment'. They were not National Guard. Hope this gives you a beginning. I don't think James Martin was in the 2nd. Brad Miter
Brian I am not familiar with the Civil War units from Renessalaer county but a call to your local historical society or public library should give you the regiments formed from counties in Eastern New York. Also a quick call to the NY State Military Museum library should also prove useful. My Great-grandfather was a "teamster" in Chicago, which meant he used a horse and wagon commercially. Either he owned his own horse and wagon and was in business for himself, or he worked for someone who owned the horses or wagons as a driver. To this day unionized truck drivers belong to the Teamsters Union. Marianne Arnold On Sep 1, 2008, at 9:18 PM, James L. Owens wrote: > I believe "Teamster" was a job. or occupational, description.
