    1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] TIGS 5th Anniversary
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. At the monthly meeting of the Troy Irish Genealogy Society last night, it was mentioned that the meeting date happened to be the fifth anniversary of the founding of the TIGS group. It was appropriate that the meeting was at the Irish Mist in Troy which is where the TIGS group was founded five years ago. A lot of work has been done in those five years as can be seen from all of the information on the TIGS website. It is worth mentioning that the TIGS website www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytigs/ now has 11 data series with 61,833 name searchable records as follows: 1. Alderman/Assistants in Troy, NY Wards During the Period 1816 to 1891 - 1,400 names. 2. Bank Officers in Troy, NY Banks During The Period 1801 to 1891 - 299 names. 3. History of the Police Department of Troy, NY from 1786 to 1902 - 688 names. 4. Death Records from a Newspaper Collection in files of Burden Iron Company, Troy, NY - 6,031 names. 5. Deceased Troy, NY Area Individuals Identified in the 1902 & 1903 Troy City Directory - 1,400 names. 6. Marriage Records from a Newspaper Collection in files of Burden Iron Company, Troy, NY - 1,448 names. 7. Payroll Records from the Burden Iron Company, Troy, NY - 8,236 names. 8. Prominent citizens of Troy & Rensselaer County, NY (Prior to 1925) - 1,800 names. 9. Rensselaer County Marriage Index, Volumes 1 to 7 - 40,014 names. 10. Representative Young Irish-Americans of Troy, NY 1889 - 400 names. 11. Troy Elks Club List of Exalted Leaders - 117 names. It should be noted that, with the single exception of the Representative Young Irish-Americans of Troy, NY, all of the data series above cover the general population of Irish AND non-Irish names. TIGS and it's many volunteer transcribers are working on even more records to add additional names to the website. Work is half completed on Volume 8 of the Rensselaer County Marriage Index which will then leave only Volumes 9 and 10 to complete this wonderful record series. The next major project being undertaken by TIGS is to create a data base of all family names listed on memorials (stained glass windows, plaques, statues, ,etc.) in local area churches. This project is even more important considering that a number of local churches are scheduled to close in the next few years and the record of these memorials identifying family names will be lost. 1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] The Troy Club
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. List members may be interested in reading an interesting article on the founding of The Troy Club that has just been added to the TIGS website. Article was taken from the book "Troy's 100 Years" published in 1891 and shows a photograph of the beautiful building that housed the club. Many of the names of the founding members will be recognized as being among Troy's leading industrialists of that era. Go to the TIGS web site www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytigs/ click on LOCAL HISTORY and then click on TROY CLUB. This section of the TIGS website also has 31 other interesting articles for anyone interested in Troy's history. Regards, Bill McGrath Clifton Park

    1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Conroy
    2. Lois
    3. On the link from TIGS website to Renss. county cemetery database there is an entry for CONROY with no other information except town of Brunswick and a burial at St. Peter's. This may be a child I have been looking for; the parents were Henry CONROY and Matilda MCCOCHRANE. They lost a child between 1900-1910 according to the 1910 census. Another one of their children who died in 1912 is also in this database. Any suggestions as to how to find out more about this burial? Lois in AZ

    1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] New Data Base - Rensselaer County Marriage Index
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. ANNOUNCING NEW DATABASE VOL. VI & VII - MARRIAGE INDEX RENSSELAER COUNTY, NEW YORK JANUARY 1924 - AUGUST 1927 A. Volume VI and VII of the ten volume set of Rensselaer County Marriages with their 8,014 names, has now been added to the Troy Irish Genealogy website. You can view these marriage records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytigs/ and click on TIGS PROJECTS. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. B. Researchers having relatives with a RENSSELAER COUNTY, NY area connection, will be interested in these on-line, name searchable, records of 40,014 names of individuals who were married in Rensselaer County, New York. If you live in a nearby county or even further away, (See item E. below), you might want to check out these names. Take a look at the data base, you never know what you will find. You may even find an earlier marriage for your relative that you never knew about. C. The TIGS website has a PRINTABLE FORM that can be used to request copies of the marriage documents from the Rensselaer County Clerk's Office. Mailing instructions and fees (only $5.00) are on the request form. There are SEPARATE request forms for EACH volume. Some of the items on the available documents will be: 1. Name, address, occupation, age, and place of birth of bride and groom. 2. If marriage for each is first, or second. If second, was first ended by death or divorce and when. 3. Names of parents of bride and groom, including maiden name of females, and country/state of birth. 4. Names of witnesses to wedding. 5. Date and place of wedding and name of clergyman, minister, rabbi, etc. 6. Race of bride and groom. D. It appears that all of the postings in Volumes VI and VII of the Marriage Index Book show a office filing date instead of the date of the marriage. However, the entry in the Marriage Book itself and on the marriage documents, will show the date of the marriage. E. In addition to the Troy Irish Genealogy Society mailing list, this message is also being sent to the genealogy mailing lists shown below as the data may be helpful to subscribers on those lists. It has been noted in working on the 40,014 names in this data base, that in many cases the places of birth OR place of residence for the Bride and the Groom can be ANYWHERE throughout New York State, other states and even foreign countries. As an example, one record had the Groom residing and born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania., the Bride residing in Detroit, Michigan, born in Jamestown, Pennsylvania and the wedding taking place in Troy. 3. Thank you but it doesn't seem to get you into the data bank of the Immigrant Savings Bank which is what I am hoping to access. From the description on the website, when opening an account they asked everything except your blood type. So anyone with an ancestor who had an account would have a myriad of information to add to their tree. . 1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] TIGS Website Problems
    2. Keefe, Jeanne M
    3. Hi Everyone: You may or may not have noticed, but Ancestry.com has "Officially" taken over administration of the RootsWeb-based website, of which the TIGS website is one. Our URL has changed from http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ to http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytigs/. Either address will work for the short term. Unfortunately, I am not able to update any pages or transfer any files until they have finished the transfer. So the TIGS meeting page will not be updated to reflect the new meeting place this month which will be the Irish Mist at 285 Second Street in Troy on Thursday September 18th. This was the announcement from Ancestry.com: WWW web sites: 2008-09-15 Due to the move of various RootsWeb functions to new servers, the processing of geographically and society oriented web space requests is being delayed. This is also affecting the ability to change files on some of these accounts. The ability to view these web sites is not affected. I will let the list know once I am able to access our webpage for editing once again. Thanks Jeanne Jeanne M. 2. Hello Bill, I just wanted to thank you for passing along the great 'genealogybank' site. The extra information they offer on the death indexes is a big help. Thanks again. Trudy S Phila. 3. I am sure that most genealogy researchers are familiar with the numerous internet sites for accessing the Social Security Death Index. Just came across a new free one that I think is the best. Go to: www.genealogybank.com and click on "Free Social Security Death Index" on lower right side of page. When a name comes up that you are interested in, clicking on the name brings up the detailed page. In addition to the date of birth and date of death you will get the day of the week for each event. Also shown is estimated date at death in years, months and days. This index is unique with weekly updates, easy-to-use format and comprehensive coverage. Try it, you will like it. 3. just a suggestion, but the website still has the August meeting notice up, which says Red Front. If someone were to check it quickly, they might not notice the date, and show up at the wrong restaurant. So you might want to update it to the correct date and place, this Thurs. Sep. 18 at the Irish Mist.
