    1. Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Social Security Death Index
    2. Rich Nichols
    3. Carol, I have used this sight quite some time ago. I never found any of my relatives. I did look at various possibilities and I can tell you that there is no guarantee that you will actually find your ancestors there. If the surname is a very common one, all the more difficult. There is no guarantee that you will even find additional names to the individual who opened the account. Yes, it is true that some will find a great deal of data on their family and others will find very little. I would just wait and see when the sight will come back online and then keep my fingers and toes crossed and wish for an Irish Blessing and maybe the luck of the Irish will ring true for you. 3. Carol, on your Home Page, upper right box called 'My Quick Links', click on the first link 'Ancestry Card Catalog'. In the 'Database Title' box, type New York Emigrant Savings Bank. This will bring up the link. There might be a simpler way, but this is how I found it. Good luck. 2. Jan
    3. Hi Listers, We still need containers to set plants in for this fall and early spring. Kris will collect containers at the October meeting, as I will be away. We're still looking for a spot in the city that would be an available for the sale; this would be our best exposure. I'll check into the Farmer's Market. It's still too early to confirm a date. I would like to aim for Saturday, May 23rd. Don't forget to dig up those plants! Set them in a double plastic bag with a little extra soil and water them. Poke a couple of small holes in the bottom so they won't rot in too much water, and set them aside for next spring if you don't have time to pot them this fall. Don't forget to label them, and if you have a picture that's even better. Enjoy a happy fall. Jan

    2. Wednesday July 9,2008TroyRecord Article100yearsagoThursday July9, 1908 “Back in 1896, Troy was the only city in New York State to give a majority to Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan. If Bryan wins his 3rd nomination this week, some Troy Democrats warn that the local ticket could suffer a historic defeat. After 30 years dominance of city politics, Democrats have been in disarray following a Republican victory in the 1905 mayoral election. The local Democratic Party is split into factions and are no longer home grown, meaning they now hate each other in the interest of leader Charey Murphy of Tammany Hall or leader Pat McCarren of Brooklyn. The result seems to be apathy in Troy in the absence of strong local leadership and increased hostility toward Jennings. Patrolman John P. O’Connell is docked twenty days pay at a disciplinary hearing for being drunk on duty last week. Two superior officers testify against him. He had passed out on a stoop near the junction of Third and Fourth Streets but roused himself enough to stagger into his First Precinct station at the end of his shift(noon-6). He explains he’s been plagued with an old complaint since his military service in the Philippines. Following the latest occurrence he tried to fortify himself with several drinks of brandy with predictable results. He is fined instead of fired because it is his first offence. 2. Tuesday July 8, 2008 Troy Record Article 100years agoWednesday July 8, 1908 “1908 children’s parade is a summer tradition on the East Side and Mrs. J.H. Ellis and Mrs. B.L. Youmans are the main organizers. They set the parade route and provide ice cream cones to all the participants. The parade starts at School 16 and Doring’s Band first went to the Troy Orphan asylum and brought the boys and girls from there into line, then went over to the school, where the parade was formed. First rode the mounted police and then the bicycles decorated with flags. Dorings men followed, playing patriotic airs, then Miss Catherine Lewis on her pony, both elaborately festooned with red, white and blue. Then a small laddie in white with a brown teddy bear on wheels, which the boy led by a string. The Teddy bear was almost life size and was adorned with a handsome blue ribbon. Next came doll carriages covered with flowers, and in the carriages were fashionably dressed dolls, with hats of the latest mode. One doll carriage was the size of a go cart and its wax occupant the size of a 3 year old child. Then came the baby carriages, also covered with flowers and ferns. Next were little girls in white, some with pink and some with blue ribbons. Then the boys all carrying flags and a company of boys clad as Indians were in the procession. The last division was a small automobile arranged with flags like a float and also a number of carts also similarly decorated. The one hour parade included blind and crippled babies, in automobiles provided by leading citizens.” Photo of the day Troy Record Tuesday July 8, 2008 1919 photo of Dad and Uncle George (as teens) in front of 86 Lexington Avenue submitted by Fred Backhaus,Saugerties. **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? 3. Congratulations to all of the volunteers at TIGS. As a member for about 2 years now, I have benefited from so much help and an enormous amount of information. Without TIGS, I doubt that I could have located all this precious information about my Grandfather's family. Thank you everyone and, again, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Jan Griffiths Toronto, Canada. -----Original Message----- From: ny-troy-irish-gensoc-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ny-troy-irish-gensoc-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bill & Cathy McGrath Sent: September 19, 2008 9:22 AM To: NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC-L@rootsweb.com; nyrensse@rootsweb.com Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] TIGS 5th Anniversary At the monthly meeting of the Troy Irish Genealogy Society last night, it was mentioned that the meeting date happened to be the fifth anniversary of the founding of the TIGS group. It was appropriate that the meeting was at the Irish Mist in Troy which is where the TIGS group was founded five years ago. A lot of work has been done in those five years as can be seen from all of the information on the TIGS website. It is worth mentioning that the TIGS website www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytigs/ now has 11 data series with 61,833 name searchable records as follows: 1. Alderman/Assistants in Troy, NY Wards During the Period 1816 to 1891 - 1,400 names. 2. Bank Officers in Troy, NY Banks During The Period 1801 to 1891 - 299 names. 3. History of the Police Department of Troy, NY from 1786 to 1902 - 688 names. 4. Death Records from a Newspaper Collection in files of Burden Iron Company, Troy, NY - 6,031 names. 5. Deceased Troy, NY Area Individuals Identified in the 1902 & 1903 Troy City Directory - 1,400 names. 6. Marriage Records from a Newspaper Collection in files of Burden Iron Company, Troy, NY - 1,448 names. 7. Payroll Records from the Burden Iron Company, Troy, NY - 8,236 names. 8. Prominent citizens of Troy & Rensselaer County, NY (Prior to 1925) - 1,800 names. 9. Rensselaer County Marriage Index, Volumes 1 to 7 - 40,014 names. 10. Representative Young Irish-Americans of Troy, NY 1889 - 400 names. 11. Troy Elks Club List of Exalted Leaders - 117 names. It should be noted that, with the single exception of the Representative Young Irish-Americans of Troy, NY, all of the data series above cover the general population of Irish AND non-Irish names. TIGS and it's many volunteer transcribers are working on even more records to add additional names to the website. Work is half completed on Volume 8 of the Rensselaer County Marriage Index which will then leave only Volumes 9 and 10 to complete this wonderful record series. The next major project being undertaken by TIGS is to create a data base of all family names listed on memorials (stained glass windows, plaques, statues, ,etc.) in local area churches. This project is even more important considering that a number of local churches are scheduled to close in the next few years and the record of these memorials identifying family names will be lost. 3. Sorry about the broken link in previous message. Just copy and paste the three lines into your browser so that they are contiguous. This will bring up the exact page without your having to go into the book.
