Wednesday July 16,2008TroyRecord Article100yearsagoThursday July 16,, 1908 “Sherriff J. Irving Baucus has offered a $1000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest of Hazel Drew’s murderer. County Detective Duncan C. Kaye found Drew’s suitcase at Troy’s Union Station. Drews cousin , Minnie Taylor, said she was carrying the suitcase when she boarded a Pawling Avenue streetcar for Watervliet on the afternoon of July 6. Detective Kaye learned that Drew was in downtown Troy on the afternoon of the 7th and left her suitcase with the parcel clerk, Adelbert Atwood. Thomas Carey, who claims to have known Drew by sight says he saw her carrying her suitcase on Congress Street between 4th & 5th streets about noon on the 7th. A search of her suitcase reveals a missing shirtwaist and detectives suspect wherever she stayed the night of the 6th is where she left it. Investigators now suspect she went to Albany instead, possibly in the company of Taylor. Hazels mother shows reporters a postcard addressed to Hazel but sent to the home of her previous employer E. R. Cary from a Carrie Weaver. Assistant DA Chester Wagar tells reporters they know little more than has been published.” Photo of the day Troy Record Tuesday July 16, 2008 1953 photo of Anne and Leonard McHugh on their wedding day. **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? Brad, my husband and I own land on Taborton Mountain almost to the Old Dutch Church and cemetary at the top. We know a ton of Teals, our favorites Eleanor and Clayton are now gone but there kids are around. You probably knew the Daytons or the Ernst's. You know they have a Buffalo farm on that mountain now. The Troy Record article on the body in Teal's pond near Taborton really brings back family memories for me. The name Teal was well known to my Miter family as we had for over 90 years a summer camp on the south side of Big Bowman Pond which is at Taborton. I called my Troy resident cousin, Frank, to brush up on some of the details. He said that some of the Teal farm fields were right across Taborton Rd. from our camp. Our family camp was built by my grandfather Frank (Pop) H. Miter in 1914. Prior to building the camp, starting perhaps as early as 1905, he would send his family to stay for the summer at a farm on the west side of Big Bowman owned by (as we recall) a Julius Rheimiller (sp?). They would stay all summer in an attempt to avoid polio. I am almost certain they would have been there in 1908 and were any of the three Miter children still alive, I'm sure one or more would have remembered the 'mystery lady' in Teal's pond. They were unable to completely avoid polio as Uncle Tom (cousin Frank's father) contracted it in 1911, probably after returning to Troy in the fall to go to school. Brad Miter (Wishing the camp had not burned down 30 years ago :( )
Please keep us notified of all subsequent articles on Hazel Drew. I am hooked on this story. Sunday July 13,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years ago Monday July 13 1908 “Hazel Drew is buried today is the 20 year old domestic servant found in Teals Farm Pond .Investigators believe she was killed on or around July 6th by a blow to the head. Drew’s family buries her at Barbersville Cemetery in Poestenkill near her birthplace, with Rev J.H.E. Rickard of Third Street Methodist Church officiating. The family originally ordered a plot dug at MT Ida Cemetery before deciding on the Poestenkill site.Drew’s uncle , William Taylor of Sand Lake was a person of interest briefly ,if only because investigators theorized she went to Sand Lake to visit him. Mr Taylor tells reporters he hasn't seen her since a 3 week visit last winter .William Gundrum,35 year old farmer and charcoal burner, and Frank Smith,17, who is said to be “rather weak mentally,” say they saw Hazel ‘ on the hollow” west of the highway leading to the Taylor farm. Previously, the last person known to have seen Drew alive was her aunt Minnie Taylor, who told investigators Drew visited her on the morning of July 6th.She had just left the employ of Prof E.R. Cary and told her aunt she planned to go to Watervliet, and boarded a streetcar for that destination on Pawling Avenue. A report of a previous attack near Teals Pond on Bertha Neustiel, who lives near Crapes Hotel on the road to East Poestenkill who fought off 2 men, raises the possibility that a serial attacker killed Drew. There are several microfilms of the New York Emigrant Savings Bank at the New York State Library in Albany. However, I found them very difficult to use. Some reels just contain books which are indexes and others have the information you would hope to find. I suggest having as much information as possible before viewing the records. If you can get it on line, it is much easier. Lynne I choose Polesoft Lockspam to fight spam, and you? http://www.polesoft.com/refer.html

To Vera and all members. Here is a good source to understand just what records the Emigrant Savings Bank contain - and it seems that one might have to go to the New York Public Library to access all of their records - Are there any members out there who live in the NYC area who might be willing to volunteer to do lookups for our members? I also understand that not all listings are for Irish immigrants - many immigrants of different nationalities joined this bank after arriving in New York City. http://www.nypl.org/research/chss/spe/rbk/faids/emigrant.pdf It is in pdf file and can be printed out on your computer. As for contacting Ancestry.com - go to their main page - scroll down to the bottom and click on "contact us" which will get you to a place to email your question(s).
