There were some people doing research recently at the Troy Library who were descendants of Sarah O'BRIEN, born in Cohoes in 1854. I am researching the same O'Brien family. Please contact me at maltesemom@sc.rr.com. Thank you. M. Alice Mangan Okatie, SC
Brad, Marilyn Mahoney and I are both researching the Gallagher surname. I have not been in touch with her for a while and it seems her e-mail address has changed. On the TIGS website surname list, she is still listed with the old address. Would you please provide me with her current e-mail address? I was recently in Ireland and would like to share some information about the Gallaghers with her. Thank you. Kay Brearton Secretary, TIGS

I believe I have read that St. Paul's Church is now administered by St. Peter's Church. AL C
my family went to St. Pauls, in fact they rebuilt the original church, but their lives were centered around this Catholic Church. Since I hit the brick wall ten years ago, its now a dam. I saw the blip about Church Records and thought maybe someone could help me. When I was last in Troy I went by St. Paul's and nobody was there, except for a lady who knew nothing. I wonder do they still have old records? Does anyone know if they exist and how could one do a search from a distance. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks, jd

Sounds like you ladies did alot of work and hopefully some of the rest of us can help in the Spring. I have already saved a ton of coffee containers and will gladly accept more at the next few meetings. BUT please not at this months meeting as we have some much going on with our Speaker and hopefully a hugh turnout. I am putting together a TIGS tote bag with items of Irish interest, including a copy of Mr. McEnenys book, "ALBANY/Capital City On The Hudson", An Illustrated History. Published in 2006 it has a painting by L.F. Tantillo, local artist, on the cover. We will raffle off the tote containing the book, a bottle of Jamesons Irish Whiskey (donated by Kay Brearton), a TIG's T-Shirt and several other items at the October meeting. Tickets will be $1.00 each or 3 for $2.00 and you must be present to win. However if you have a family member or friend that cannot be present and you want to collect money from them in advance for a chance, buy their ticket and be available to collect the prize for them, please do so. I am sure Mr. McEneny will be happy to autograph the book for the winner. We hope to raise some money with the raffle for future TIGS projects. Hi Jim, Thanks for the information about the designation of the Ulster Scots as Irish. I knew they were in earlier days, but didn't know they ever differentiated between them. I'm sure you're right - it was to identify the Presbyterians. The other thing I've encountered is that Irish in this country often had Great Britain or England as their birthplace in the U. S. census, even when they were born in Ireland. I guess because they were considered British by the census taker. One of my daughter-in-law's family had it that way in the first two, then had IRISH FREE STATE in caps in the last one of them I found. I'm sure they insisted the census taker put it that way, since the rest of the sheet is in lower case, except for normal caps. Marianne On Oct 4, 2008, at 9:07 PM, James L. Hi Mary Lee, My husband is descended from George Parkhurst and Phebe Leete's daughter Phebe, who married Thomas Arnold. He descends from both Thomas and Phebe's oldest son Richard and their youngest Eleazar - the latter through the female line via the Ballous. He is descended from both Tomasine Frost and her sister, whose name for the moment escapes me. Also from Edmund Rice and I haven't yet figured out those Carters. And from Henry Howland, brother of John Howland of Mayflower fame. Henry missed the boat! Gary Boyd Roberts always tells everyone, "Bill Arnold has all the blue blood, Marianne married 'up'!" But I wouldn't trade my starving shirt-tail Irish for all the blue blood out there. They were dealt lousy hands in life, rose to meet them and survived. I'm very proud of them. Sarah Palin has a wonderful American ancestry. I hope someone sorts it all out for her and presents her with the account. I disagree with her, but she is a remarkable young woman, with much to be admired. Marianne
Sorry folks, that is the end of the Drew case to date - apparently never solved.............. Monday August 4 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoTuesday August 4 ,1908 “ DA O’Brien interviews Carrie Weaver, the friend of Hazel Drew, and tells reporters that Weaver confirms what everyone who knew Drew said that”to the effect that she had no steady male company and her conduct was free from cause for comment.” The DA says the work on the case will be continued but the outlook for favorable results is not good”” Friday July 31, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSaturday July 31, 1908 “The coroners inquest has failed to affirm that Hazel Drew died by foul play. In an opinion published today Rensselaer County coroner M. H. Strope states that Drew” came to her death from extravasation of blood in the durameter caused by a blow on the head from some blunt instrument in some manner unknown. In other words she died from bleeding in the brain. DA O’Brien recalls special agents Louis Unser and William Powers from Taborton mountain where they have been investigating for nearly 3 weeks. The Record reporter says “ the case will go down in history as an unsolved problem unless something develops.” **************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination.
