Hi Rebecca, We corresponded back in March when I inquired about the records of the First Baptist Church of Troy. You said they were closing and the Historical Society was negotiating for the records. Were the records saved? I also wanted to respond to your query about Excell. To enlarge the cells you click on, hold and move the little lines at the top of the page that divide the cell. --- On Mon, 10/20/08, Rebecca Rector <rrector1@nycap.rr.com> wrote: From: Rebecca Rector <rrector1@nycap.rr.com> Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] church memorial project & excel To: ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, October 20, 2008, 1:49 PM I am trying to enter data into excel for church memorials, but the data is too large for the small cells. Hi Rebecca: AT the top of the sheet, on the taskbar, under FORMAT, you can choose "word wrap" and the cells will enlarge to accommodate the information. Otherwise if you put your cursor on the line at the top of the page that separates the columns you want to enlarge. A cross will appear on that line, hold down the left button on your mouse and drag the separator to the width you want the column to be. Jeanne Jeanne M. Tuesday August 5 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoWednesday August 5 , 1908 “Troy Library Trustees James H. Caldwell and Henry Galusha make their case before the common council’s finance committee, asking for an additional 2,500 on top of the 4,000 allocated for the library which has to meet a rising demand for books and other services as well as for additional librarians. Caldwell tells the committee that the library is not as generously endowed by the Hart family as many people believe.Mrs. Howard Hart turned over the building to the Troy’s Young Mens Association soon after it was built and only select alcoves enjoy any endowment. In 1902, Caldwell says, the library circulated approximately 30,000 books to a membership of about 2000 people with only 2 librarians and a janitor. Today, six years later, the library circulates up to 120,000 books ,employs 8 librarians and still only 1 janitor. The committee doesn’t take action tonight but it is understood it will make a favorable report. Well we had a nice turnout for Mr. McEneny's talk. There is real interest out there in our group and we received many compliments on our website and transcription projects. Next....we will set up a table of informaton during the Troy Victorian Stroll on 12/6/08. This is an annual event in Troy that brings thousands of people into the city to stroll and inform themselves of Troy's wonderful history including the people, architecture and organizations. I have been informed that we can set up at Troy City Hall. NOW for the interesting part. We are looking for members to come to the stroll, volunteer to man the table and to dress for the occasion. Any member who would enjoy dressing as though they lived in the Victorian era. If you have been to the stroll you will remember men in tophats and women in long dresses, capes and of course lovely hats. You can make, rent or borrow clothing. I did find a website,http://www.recollections.biz/ that has a variety of clothing from $50 and up to whatever you want to spend. You will need to decide soon as it takes about 4 weeks to get your order. You can be an Irish Housekeeper or a person of influence, whichever you prefer. Please consider this as it will highlight our group as well as be fun......Let me know so we have an idea of how many members we will have.....Kris **************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination. The following changes to the Charter were proposed at the September 2008 meeting and paid members in good standing may vote for or against these changes. There is a ballot posted on the TIGS website with full directions on how to vote. The ballot will be up for 30 days to give those members an opportunity to vote We are proposing that BOTH the Webmaster and List Administrator NOT be required to attend meetings in order to hold those positions. Both positions are ones that any full member would be able fulfill the obligations of the position without without being a local member. Please take the opportunity to cast your vote. Hello, I require assistance with an Irish couple that immigrated (separately) to and lived in Troy. Thomas RYAN (b Mar 1855) and Mary (YOUNG) RYAN (b Mary 1862) were both from Tipperary, they were the parents of Senator John Peter RYAN (b1891). Could someone with access to records assist me? I require the details of their marriage which I believe would have been in 1883-1884 in St Peters Church and their death certificate information -Thomas died in 1901 and Mary in 1927. And I also would like to know how I might access records to St Peter's Church. Many thanks, G Young, Canada
here is the link to the Missing Friends column mentioned by Jack McEneny in his talk this evening. (For those who were not at the talk, the website is self-explanatory.) You can search by name, or just location (try county or parish or townland, if you know it, without a name). http://infowanted.bc.edu/ Donna
Saturday July 26, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSunday July 26 , 1908 “Samuel Etoll of 1456 Fifth Avenue is shot when he opens the door to rapping and the question”Have you any nice girls in there?”.Doctors say he was shot near the heart ,with the bullet lodging between the 5th & 6th ribs, but he hardly feels it as he runs after 2 men fleeing the scene. He grabs the tallest one, not the shooter and hangs onto him until the fellow's hat falls off.He could not hold the man and then went after the second shooter before he dropped to the ground and that was the last he remembers until waking up in the hospital. As Etoll is taken by an ambulance to the hospital, the police conduct a manhunt for a hatless man,who will stick out in the crowd of 1908.The police pounce on Roderick Burrows at the corner of 5th and Congress ,a machinist who lives at 207 Fourth Street ,who says he spent the night in a doorway after getting drunk “down the river”. The police are inclined to think him innocent. Etoll describes his assailant, with the help of an interpreter,as short and stout with dark hair and a small dark mustache. The accomplice was a tall man with dark hair and a sandy mustache wearing a dirty gray suit. Authorities believe it follows a feud which has existed for some time among several Syrian families. The police later in the day arrest Henry Gallagher from Salem who matches the description of one of the assailants." **************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination. Kay Brearton and I have recently returned from Ireland where we had the occasion to transcribe some of this parish's records. You can find all baptisms from when they started in 1810 to Jan 1820, almost 1,000 baptisms. I also have some marriages that either have Connors people getting married or acting as witnesses for marriages 1829-1850. Even if you don't have Connors in your tree, you should check out the marriages. I will be putting up another 500+ records from the Tipperary RC Parish, both baptisms and marriages, shortly. You can find these on the County Tipperary section of my website. While I had hoped to get most records from both of these parishes, the task was impossible in the time we had, not to mention how long it took because the records were not always in good condition and at best they were difficult to read, hence, a number of ?? -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

I just got back from Wilmington, NC, which is why I haven't responded. Before I came to an end with the Drew articles,I looked up on the Internet using various buzz words(name, place, year, the word murder etc) and came up with an interesting 1911 article in the NYTimes which referenced Hazel's death as unsolved .I tried to copy /paste it but NY times must have protected it from copying because I couldn't get it to come out right, but the jist of it was that in 1911 it was still considered an unsolved case. There was a shooting in Sand Lake in 1911 and that was the tie in to the Drew case. Your right about the forensic tools today- they probably could have done a lot more with the case had it been today.Glad you'all (that's a word heard in North Carolina a lot) enjoyed the case.
