Here is a link to a new site about Grosse Ile in Quebec - the quarantine station for many Irish immigrants. Jack McEneny mentioned this briefly during his talk. There is a database that you can search, though it's doesn't have a great search engine, no advanced search options etc. But it's interesting. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/grosse-ile/ Rebecca ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amy La Pietra" <tvamy50@comcast.net> To: <ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 05, 2008 2:07 PM Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] old maps > Hi everyone.I want to share this site that I have been having fun looking > at: www.davidrumsey.com. I tried the site, but it wanted me to "create an account". Is that the only way to see the maps? I'm reluctant to do this since it always generates more junk e-mail etc.. Hi everyone.I want to share this site that I have been having fun looking at: www.davidrumsey.com. It is filled with wonderful old maps of Albany, Troy and hundreds of other places. Some of the old maps have the names of the landowners on them as well as the location of the cemeteries in Troy. Does anyone know what school was on Mill Street half way up on the left ? The old stairs are still there and I noticed on one of the maps circa 1891 there is a school there. My grandfather lived on Burden Ave in Troy and I am thinking he might have gone to this school. Would it have been typical for the children of the Irish in Troy to go only to the Catholic schools ? I am still trying to find out where my great grandparents are buried. It has been fun so far. Amy
How can I access the Troy Directories from out of state? I am in Wa. and i would like to check the directories for family listings. Yes Grace, we all order off the menu at the meeting. Some folks eat dinner before they get there, but most eat. We start the meeting after ordering, when dinner arrives we take a break and then finish up. Look forward to seeing you again. Kristin **************Plan your next getaway with AOL Travel. Hi Grace, I didn't know you were on the computer. I have been a member of Tigs ever since they started years ago. They are very helpful. My grandfather worked for The Burden Iron Works and Danny and I went to see the factory and met Mr. Carroll and the members who started Tigs I.have been sick all week with a chest cold and since I go into pneumonia so easy I have to be real careful. I did get to mass last night as it was for Kay.but I got a fit of coughing and had to go to the hall for a while when our priest was talking .I do feel a lot better today. I have never gone to the Tigs meetings as they are at night . Do hope you are feeling okay. P.S. Did you see where Theresa O'Brien Beauregard died. She was so sweet. She volunteered with my brother in- law over at Our Lady of Hope and that is how I got connected with her again. My neighbor, Emil Schmidt died at the same time so I had 2 wakes to go to this past Sunday and Emil's funeral was Monday so it was a good thing I wasn't sick then. If you click on the link to the pbs schedule in my email about the /Cemetery Special/, it should give the broadcast times correctly for the program by entering your zip code. Lois
I have not seen this program but thought it looked interesting to some, maybe all. Note-- town of Waterloo in NY. Lois in AZ "A Cemetery Special" Celebrates Some Old And Interesting Places Where People Are Buried several burial places from Key West to Fairbanks are celebrated in a new public television documentary titled "A Cemetery Special," premiering Wednesday, October 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET (check local listings.) <http://www.pbs.org/tvschedules/> Also, a second broadcast of the program has been scheduled for Monday, October 31 at 10:00 p.m. ET on many of those same stations. At the Key West Cemetery in Florida, there's lots of local history and a few funny epitaphs amid the palm trees and the monuments. On Memorial Day, the town of Waterloo in New York's Finger Lakes region carries on the town's tradition of decorating the graves of soldiers who died in the line of duty. And in Atlanta, the Historic Oakland Cemetery is essentially full - it sold its last family plot back in 1884 - but its Foundation and many volunteers are working together now to restore its Victorian grandeur and to attract lots of visitors. "There's nothing spooky or scary in the program," . "It's a brisk sort of tour that we hope will convince people to wander through a cemetery someday soon, looking for unusual headstones, visiting a departed friend, remembering beloved parents or grandparents or ancestors of any sort. We may remind people how short life can be. That would be OK too."
Greetings, to all members, This is just a reminder that our monthly meeting will be held Thursday, November 20th.at six thirty p.m. As of yet, we have not decided on a location, but will let you know that as soon as I can. So,in setting up your November calendar, put that date aside, and I will get back to you on the place shortly. Mimi
