Hi, Are you doing research on the brewerys? I am interested in the Ed. Tracey Brewery and Kennedy& Murphy's. Some one once told me that the trains did Troy in. Well since I don't live there I was walking through a bookstore in Atlanta a couple of years ago and discovered a magazine about Trains. The title was..."The trains of Troy, NY" . I am not researching the breweries just thought I would share. I have a poster that hung in a friends tavern. The poster lists all of the breweries with their addresses. Edward Tracy was a Malster located on the W. Side of First Avenue at 119th St. Kennedy and Murphy was located on the SE Corner of Ferry Street and Sixth Avenue and was also known as "Excelsior Brewery". Friday August 8, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSaturday August 8, 1908 “The American athletes are returning home from the London Olympics and they are angry at their host nation .American Olympic commissioner James E. Sullivan says the treatment accorded us at the games was at least rotten. The trouble began when the Americans at the opening ceremonies discovered that their flag wasn't flying in the stadium with the other participating countries. In response they refused to dip the US flag in respect to King Edward VII and Britons interpreted this as an insult. Americans cite biased judging and outright cheating by Britons .In the 400 meter run, the judges ordered the race done over because an American runner had inadvertently forced a British competitor off the track .Three Americans refused to run in the do over and since there were only 4 finalists, the British runner won by circling the track by himself. In the tug of war the American team was eliminated early by the a British squad and the Americans said the British wore spiked shoes. In the marathon, British officials assisted Italian Donato Pietri across the finish line after he collapsed on the final lap ahead of American Billy Hayes .While judges disqualified Pietri and awarded Hayes the gold medal, the British public treated Pietri as if he had won. US team manager Mathew Halpin complained it took twelve or 15 minutes to raise the American flags but only a few seconds to raise British flags. Canadian team manager sides with the British, saying the American protests were of the most trivial nature.” (_http://www.troyrecord.com_ (http://www.troyrecord.com/) ) PS Go to the Troy Record newspaper website; at the top click on Opinions then click on This Day in the Record and it will give you about a current weeks worth of This day in History. **************AOL Search: Your one stop for directions, recipes and all other Holiday needs. Several people have asked me about "Carol's Eatery" on Pawling Ave. as we had proposed meeting there this month. Mimi called to reserve for the meeting and was told that Thursday is a very busy night for them, so they asked us is we could change to Wednesday. So in the short term we decided to go back to Redfront for this month. We can discuss other options then. I have one book by Marianna O'Gallagher, Grosse Ile Gateway to Canada 1832-1937". It contains excerpts from registers of deaths, vessels, return of valuables but most valuable it has a list of orphans from 1847 and 1848. The list contains 619 names, along with the names of the people who adopted them. There is the orphan name, age, date of entry, father, mother, parish, county, vessel and who took them in, or in many instances the day they died. I have it listed as a look up source on our "Irish Acts of Kindness Page" on our website. The names are alphabetical so if anyone is looking for the possibility that their ancestor was orphaned at Grosse Ile and could have taken another name I would be happy to check the list. Hi Rebecca. I clicked on the link for davidrumsey and I can see they are just pushing a new browser program. You don't have to set up any account to see the maps (and all the rest of the prints and stuff). Just click on "home" again and then click on view collections or any of the other choices. I don't set up accounts either at these kinds of sites. You are right it does lead to spam. Good Luck. There is a paperback book put out by Parks Canada called A Register of Deceased Persons at Sea and on Grosse Ile in 1847 by Andre Charbonneau and Doris Drolet-Dube which lists the people who died there or aboard ship on the Atlantic or the St. Lawrence. It gives names and ages of the passengers who died as well as information about the ships. There also are a number of books by Marianna O'Gallagher on the tragedy that occurred there in the summer of 1847.
