Saturday August 9, 2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoSunday August 9 , 1908 “Deputy Sheriff John Bloomingdale has a vacant building on his property in North Greenbush and is stationed in a second floor room watching for a crowd of boys who have been robbing his orchard for several days. While waiting for the boys, he sees 2 men who had the appearance of vagrants enter the building..He hurries downstairs to find the men hidden in a closet and locked the door behind them. They are John Healy of Salem and Edward Toohey, who also goes by the name of Sweeney, of NYC, who tell investigators later that Bloomingdale and another man banged on the door and threatened to shoot if he and Healy didn't come out. Toohey says he and Healy simply sought shelter on their way to Rensselaer where they meant to find jobs in the railroad shops.Bloomingdale reports he ordered them out but they called him names and absolutely refused him to enter the room.He tried to break the door down with no luck , so to scare them, he fires his revolver at the door.Healy was shot in the neck, and after trying to treat the man, Bloomingdale calls Dr James Love, who dresses the wound and then orders Healy taken by ambulance to the Troy Hospital.Sherriff Irving Baucus and DA O’Brien are expected to begin an investigation tomorrow. **************Get the Moviefone Toolbar. _http://www.recollections.biz/_ (http://www.recollections.biz/) jan this is where Liz and I bought dresses. They are not cheap but they have sale dresses. I found a hat by this great lady on e-bay,she does not have a web-site. So just put in Victorian Hat or Victorian Bonnet and a selection will come up. I did send her an off ebay e-mail asking if I could send you directly to her via regular e-mail and am waiting for a reply. Donna is putting her outfit together right out of her closet so you may want to check to see what she has and get some ideas. In a seperate e-mail I will send a pix of the dress I bought, the one Liz bought and the bonnet I ordered. I am still scouring the internet for a cape and shoes but worse case scenario I wear high black boots, won't see much under the dress. I also have a mink stole of my Mom's somewhere here in the house. If you got to the website for the stroll (just google Troy NY Victorian Stroll), you can see some of the outfits people have worn. kris **************Get the Moviefone Toolbar. In line with the recent discussion on Troy Breweries, don't forget to read the article on the TIGS website about brewing of beer in Troy. Under the LOCAL HISTORY section of the TIGS website, www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ click on BEER BREWERIES. Along with the story on the brewing of beer in Troy are a number of interesting photographs. The text of the article is taken from the book Troy's 100 Years published in 1891. The photographs are courtesty of webmaster Jeanne Keefe. Regards, Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY

Hi Kris, I think that Dobler and Krugler's were also breweries in Troy back in the forties and fifties. Not sure about the spelling. Did you mention Stanton? Jan
About a week ago there was an article in the TU about Jim Shaunessy, one of the most knowledgeable people in the country about trains. He is a Trojan, and has written and photograph trains all over the country. His black and white photographs are spectacular! I graduated from CCHS with Jim. He has recently published a new book. Not sure of the title, but his name is renown in the area of train enthusiasts. Jan

I would love to see the book "Trains of Troy, NY". My mother's brothers were railroad men. I used to sit in the kitchen window of my Grand father's third floor home and watch the switching of box cars. In North Troy we used to go behind the Knickerbocker Junior High School to go across the tracks and hike up to the Oakwood Cemetary. At that time the trains were steam driven and North bound trains would put out a huge amount of smoke which we were told would kill if inhaled. Sometimes we put a penny on the track to let the engine squash it but I don't recall ever finding it after the train passed. Al Cuerdon 1406 Fairway Dr Dunedin FL 34698
