    2. Monday August 18 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoTuesday August 18 ,1908 “ Political custom of the era dictates that the party follow their candidate back from the political convention to notify him of his nomination. The Republican party does this by following James S. Sherman back to Utica to tell him he is the running mate of William Howard Taft. Politicians in the 19th and early 20th century weren't supposed to look like they were promoting themselves for office. Taft isn't there but Secretary of State Elihu Root is there .Incoming trains brought throngs of visitors while inter –urban trolleys from points as far west as Syracuse were crowded to capacity. Bands played and the train carrying the nominating committee is given a 19 gun salute. Patriotic decorations are everywhere and a big electrical sign of welcome is hung on an old bridge. Following the official notification by Missouri senator Julius C. Burrows, Sherman delivers "one of the shortest speeches ever put on record by a candidate for so high an office".” **************Life should be easier. So should your homepage. Try the NEW AOL.com. Close to the boys camp is an electric tower supporting high tension wires, about 50 feet in the air, belonging to the Hudson River Power Company. Several of Whitbecks companions climb a pole and carve their initials, about 30 feet up. Whitbeck climbed higher than the rest, close to the wires and was about to descend whence threw up his hands and fell onto the live wires. A team of linemen finally bring his body down. The Mechanicville coroner arrives and orders the remains taken to Lemon’s undertaking parlor in Cohoes. Whitbeck is survived by his brother and his mother, the widow of former Fifth Ward supervisor Peter L. During the year 1885, nearly 170,000 barrels of ale, porter and lager were brewed in Troy. On 9/25/1963 fire wrecked the Stanton Brewing Company and the Fitzgerald Brewery burned on 11/1/1964. People doing research, knowing their ancester worked for a brewery, have a tendency to think of Stanton, Quandts or Fitzgeralds however they could have worked for one of the lesser known; "Samuel Bolton and Sons", "Conway Brothers & Kane", "Donohue,Tierney & Isengart", "Kennedy & Murphy","Stoll's", "Kirchners", "Ruschers", "Troy Brewing Co.", "Cold Spring Brewery" "Daly's", "Gaffigah Brothers", "Hoghen,Thomas" or "Edward Tracy". The last two were "Maltsters", not acutal breweries. This gives you an idea of why there were so many taverns in Troy, someone had to sell and drink what was produced.
