Hi Lee, I did find some interesting information online. Thank you for pointing me in that direction. The NY Times did have an old article, which was most interesting, and I had no idea that stove moulders were a highly specialized job. Nor did I know that they were unionized. Fascinating reading. This mailing list really is a gem. Sunday August 24 ,2008TroyRecord Article 100years ago Monday August 24,1908 “Frank Jackson and his wife settle in the Sandy Hill area 6 weeks ago. The wife got a job as a maid in the home of Grenville M. Ingalsbe, a former judge. The husband got a job but lost it after 2 weeks and has been heavily drinking since then. Jackson shows up yesterday at the judges house twice and is refused entry. He comes back at 7am and upon gaining entry into the house drags his wife into the yard and slashes her throat with a razor. She runs the 2 blocks to Dr Parks office but dies soon after arriving there. Jackson ran off through side streets towards Smith’s Basin, with a posse after him. He doubles back to Sandy Hill under a Glenn Street piazza, where some boys alert a deputy sheriff. List members may be interested in the status of the Rensselaer County Marriage Index Project and the continuing need for help on this project. Currently Volumes 1 to 7, with their 40,000 names, are available on line on the TIGS website, www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ This index is the most popular data series on the TIGS website. Work is now being done on Volumes 8 and 9 as follows: 1. Volume 8: As previously mentioned, the index pages for this volume do not show the marriage number and the date of the marriage. Several local TIGS volunteers have helped in looking up the names in the Marriage Book itself, to obtain this information and post it to the photocopy of the marriage index page. To date 69 pages of the index have been completed which leave 47 pages remaining to be worked on. This is where help can be used. If you are in there Troy area and can spend an hours or so do some lookups, it would be a great help. Until these lookups are done, the 47 pages cannot be scanned and sent to transcribers for data entry. The 69 pages completed so far cover Brides and Grooms names from A to Me and all of these records have been transcribed and proofread. 2. Volume 9: All of the Volume 9 index pages for Grooms AND Brides names have been scanned. Work is continuing on data entry of these pages and to date nearly all Grooms names from A to Py have been data entered and proof read. Volume 9 is an exceptionally large index book and may have 10,000 names in it. Additional transcribers can always be used to help with the data entry. If anyone has an interest in helping with this project, either doing data entry OR helping with the Volume 8 lookups at the County Clerk's Office in Troy, they can write me off list at: seamus@nycap.rr.com Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY
Wednesday August 20,2008TroyRecord Article100yearsagoThursday August 20,, 1908 “The City of Troy has submitted its final budget estimate for 1908, an increase of nearly 5000$ over the preliminary budget approved earlier in the year. The budget anticipates that Troy will have to pay $998,686.84 by years end.The city must approve the preliminary budget in order to borrow money to meet expenses during the year .Approval of the final estimate is necessary before the city can collect taxes in the fall. The estimate is 70,000 over last year, 1907. The extra 5,000 is due to Septembers Troy Week Celebration and is mostly for police and fire. The public safety department has acquired a patrol wagon, hired 4 new sergeants and outfitted a mounted patrol this year. The fire dept has purchased new chemical wagons and new equipment for one of its fire trucks this year.An economic slump, beginning late last year is also a factor, because of the higher interest rates with the city borrowing at 5 percent instead of 4 percent. At the Rensselaer County Agricultural and Horticultural Society's annual fair, held at Rensselaer Park in Lansingburgh has had nearly 40,000 people pass thru the gates. Tuesday August 19 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoWednesday August 19 , 1908 “Beyond the age of 3 score and 10(70) Patrick Partland walked into police court and tells Magistrate Abbott Jones his son Joseph has abused him again and injured him so badly he is afraid to live in the house. He wants his son sent away but did not want to see him suffer. The son said he had a few more days to work in the city but the magistrate tells him to give up the job and leave town today before noon. Jones dismisses a case against Michael Sullivan who was found sleeping on a stoop by Officer Preston ,since he has not seen Sullivan in court in over a year. Another case involves John Hopkins who came from Saratoga to ship a horse by boat to New York City. He put the horse on board and then went visiting, only remembering some drinking and being hit by something. Magistrate Jones determines it was a fist and tells him to go to his relatives residing in Troy and have his facial wounds dressed by them.” **************Life should be easier.
