Hi Jeanne, I'm sorry that I'm unable to attend the meeting at your house...I have another commitment for this evening. I was in touch with my sister Eileen Burton and she won't be able to attend either as she is babysitting. I was also in touch with Kay Brearton and she said that she wasn't planning on attending the TIGS meeting at your house because her daughter Colleen has been sick with the flu and she has been helping her with the babies. Kay has also been having some problems at her house because of the ice storm. I know that we're going to miss a good time. I wish you and all of the TIGS members a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year! This sounds like a great idea as more and more records will go away as many churches, societies, gov't offices, etc., do not put genealogy on the high priority list. Allen has taken himself out of consideration for a second run for state senate. He was nominated to replace a Republican incumbent in 1906, but lost a usually safe seat to Frank M. Boyce, a Democrat. Some Republicans are touting Henry J. Speck, a prominent member of the bar. Allen represents his home town of Petersburgh and joins his colleagues in unanimously reelecting George B. Wellington as county chairman.Wellington holds the formal office but in practice he shares power with state prison superintendent Cornelius V. When I visited St. Peters in Troy Last summer, Denise Mentioned that some of the Churches might be merging. I asked her about the Parih records and it they had any plans to Scan them and save them. Denise said that some one from another Parish had said they would assist her in this work. It is a fairly big job and Denise has many other duties. The Pastor seems nice but not interseted in genealogy. He is probably not likely to allow Denise to spend a lot of time on this. Denise would probably be very resistant to having the books worked on away from the rectory. It would be great if the TIGS group could assist, like we did for the marriage records. If the churches will let us. I would be willing to help with the transcription A.E Fadden “Beware the people who moralize about great issues; moralizing is easier than facing hard facts.” - John Corry --- On Wed, 12/10/08, Lynn Grice <megrice@attglobal.net> wrote: From: Lynn Grice <megrice@attglobal.net> Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Churches in Troy - Renss Co Historical Society presentation To: ny-troy-irish-gensoc@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, December 10, 2008, 3:12 PM Some members may be interested in this mailing from the Rennselaer County Historical Society. ************** Threatened Churches of Troy Many of our downtown churches are threatened by declining attendance and the demands of maintaining historic structures. In Troy, the Roman Catholic Church is looking at closing or merging seven of the fourteen churches in Troy; two of the five Episcopal Churches are for sale, and others are also threatened. Unfortunately, many of the most threatened churches seem to be the oldest and most historic. Architectural historian Ned Pratt will survey the important architecture and stained glass of these churches, and examine several examples of the adaptive reuse of historic Churches, including four in Troy itself. Ned Pratt is a preservation consultant and President of the local chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. He has an interest in the stained glass and architecture of area churches, and has given talks and tours of area churches and stained glass for the Hudson Mohawk Gateway, Hudson Valley Community College, the Sage colleges, Historic Albany, and for Oakwood Cemetery - to mention just a few. Tuesday August 26 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoWednesday August 26 , 1908 “The new patrol wagon use by Troy Police is questioned by critics who say it is only used to convey prisoners between the jail and the courthouse and not to take people arrested into the police station .Public Safety Commissioner Mann defends the police use by saying”There are times when someone is taken into custody near the police station and they are walked in, rather than wait for the wagon. Holding a person on a street corner waiting for the wagon attracts a crowd.” Police superintendent Morris Kirkpatrick notes that on night patrols there isn't a driver on duty since the driver is on from 7am to 6pm and recommends that a night driver be hired. Monday August 25 ,2008 TroyRecord Article 100years agoTuesday August 25 ,1908 “ The last of the major party notification ceremonies for 1908 is done as John W. Kern of Indiana accepts the Democratic vice presidential nomination. Kern delivers his acceptance speech at a newly built coliseum on the Indiana State Fairgrounds that holds around 15,000. The traction lines and fourteen railroads brought the people on regular and special trains. 500 cars transported the crowds from the city to the fairgrounds and back.Kern, in his acceptance speech abides by the custom of his time by disclaiming any political ambition. Republican nominee Howard Taft steals some headlines by releasing a record called “ A Little Sermon in a Phonograph. Which says “No man can study the movement of modern civilization from an impartial standpoint and not realize that Christianity and the spread of Christianity are the only basis for hope of modern civilization in the growth of popular self government” Photo of the day Troy Record Monday August 25,2008 1920 photo of Indian Motorcycle **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place.
