    3. Hi Kristin, Thank you of having me. Yes I am in the Troy area. I currently live in Waterford. The family names I have in Troy are Banks (from 15th Street) Ahearn/Ahern and Kelly (from Liberty Street). I have done a lot of work already but it has been a few years since I did any work on my genealogy. I had given it to my Mother, Teresa (Banks) Lewandusky a few years ago, and now that she has passed a year ago this month I am ready to get back to it. I got an email from my mother's friend Kay Brearton about your group, and thought it would be a good way to get back into it. I am not working at this time and would love to work on any projects you may need an able body for. If you could tell me how to post on the message board, I went to the string but I did not see where to post myself. Thanks again, Andrea -----Original Message----- From: Kris6851@aol.com [mailto:Kris6851@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 11:25 PM To: asharp1@nycap.rr.com; NY-Troy-Irish-Gensoc@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Subscribe Welcome to TIGS, always looking for new members. Friday Sept 12 ,2008 Troy Record Article 100years ago Saturday Sept 12, 1908 " The committee on gambling and the contention that Sheriff Besch allowed it continues with testimony from Roscoe Earle, a novice private detective hired by the Civic League. Earle says he toured Albany on July 24th placing bets at several locations. He says he went into a back room where there was a row of chairs, a blackboard and a desk and saw money changing hands, and slips of paper returned to the buyers. When he tried to place a bet he was questioned as to if he had ever placed a bet there and when he said he hadn't,was told to leave and go to where he had placed a bet before. He did place a bet at Fred Gomble's cigar store at 168 Lark St, the Maine Cafe on Central Ave and Thomas Burch's store at 229 Central. All those stores dealt exclusively in 'policy', with no other forms of gambling taking place." Thursday Sept 11 ,2008 Troy Record Article 100years ago Friday Sept 11, 1908 “Today is the opening day of hearings for a commission appointed by Gov Charles Evans Hughes on the petition of the Civic League of Albany who wants Sheriff Joseph Besch removal from office for neglecting his duty to prevent gambling. The governor has appointed George D. Beatty of Brooklyn as commissioner to hear the evidence.First testimony is Arthur Roy, an employee of the Dudley Laboratory who worked with the Civic League to collect evidence of gambling. Roy recounts how he and Charles Schwab of Albany stopped at 167 Lark St at a cigar shop and were able to place 5 cent bets on a 'gig', a sort of numbers game. They then went to a central Ave cafe and placed 10 cent bets on a similar game. The Arcade cigar store across from Union Station had a sign in its window"Watch our 3 numbers" and Roy was able to place a bet in the back room.Roy and Schwab went to 4 more places on Hudson,Herkimer, Beaver and Dallius Streets and placed bets. Attorney J. Fiero, defense attorney for Sheriff Besch, asks if there were any outward signs about the gambling on the establishments and Roy answers no.Fiero says the League should have reported the gambling to the police so they could have acted on it. **************New year...new news. Members of the city’s Market Gardener Association, which administers the market, have demanded Beam pay 75c a day to use the market stall. At a meeting this morning, it was agreed that the market superintendent,Dillon, should collect the daily fee from non members when Association officers aren't on the premises. Dillon in turn delegates collections to Officer Mulholland of the police when Dillon has to bring in cows that have strayed off pasture. Beam insists that neither Dillon or Mulholland have the right to collect fees for the Association and makes that point heatedly at City Hall. Mayor Mann agrees to investigate . Public Works Commissioner Shields says if the officer collected any fees he was wrong to do so.Mulhollands superior Captain Rohn, agrees but states under the circumstances he probably did what he thought he was called upon to do.
