    1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] ROLL CALL: Becket or Beckett
    2. Wayne Simmons
    3. Hello TIGS List participants: I currently reside in the North East Ohio area but am originally from Ionia County, Michigan. Michigan is where my ancestors migrated to in the early 1800's on my father's side and early 1900's on my mother's side. Currently, I am pursuing my ancestors on my mother's side in the Beckett or Becket line. I keep a genealogy website at www.simmonsgenealogy.com with limited information on the Becket line. Of immediate interest is my 2nd great-grandfather Oliver Becket b. abt 1835 in Ireland and is believed to have immigrated into the US around 1853, port of entry is unknown. Also, is believed to have immigrated to Canada shortly after that. He was married around 1855 to a lady named Margaret b. abt 1835 of Ireland also. They have 3 children that I know of, named: Samuel b. abt 1859 in Canada, Edward b. abt 1861 in Illinois and Margaret b. abt 1868 in Illinois. If anyone can help me find additional information about this family I would very much appreciate hearing from you! Thanks in advance! Wayne Simmons from Ohio and Michigan

The children: Mary age 19, Ann or Hannah 17, Catherine 14, Pat(rick) 11, Bernard (Barney) 7, John 5 and Ellen 3. They came upstate and lived at 33 Garner Street in Cohoes, NY. 1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] ROLL CALL - STEINWAY / STEINWEG
    2. Donna K. Vaughn
    3. OK, so this name is German, not Irish. But it IS Troy! My Steinway/Steinweg (Jacob) was from Hesse Cassel (Bavaria) Germany prior to coming to Troy (1856). Maybe one of the piano Steinway's! (I'm told it's a relatively small line in Germany.) It is around the same time that Henry came over (1851). And to the Port of New York, too. My Steinway said "no" to piano's, though, and came upstate to Troy. Donna Vaughn Upstate New York

    3. Donna Vaughn Upstate New York Researching: Driscoll, Butler - Green Island (near Troy) mid-1800's forward For Driscoll: Ireland previous to Green Island (think it's County Cork but haven't confirmed that yet. ) For Butler: Canada before Green Island, and Ireland prior to that. At least 3 generations of "James Butler"-- gee, maybe I have a claim on Kilkenny Castle!

    2. Andrea Sharp
    3. Hi All. I am Andrea from Waterford-Halfmoon, NY. But grew up on River Street in Troy and my family goes back... The Banks family bought property from the Tibbits on 15th Street, in 1867 (this is the correct year). However the family came from Ireland Co. Sligo, to NYC (don't know exactly when but I think around 1851? I have no idea when the Ahearn's got here but some of you may know of my Grandmother's (Nora Ahern Bank wife of Joseph Banks) Cousin Jack Ahern who was the Mayor of Troy back in the 1960's. This is the Ahearn family who got the land allocated from the Warren family (Warren Hill) for Prospect Park in Troy. The Kelly's, which was the surname of my Grandmother's (Nora Ahern Banks) her Mother Marry Kelly Ahearn/Ahern. I know this family lived on Liberty Street back in the 1800's into the 1900s. The last surname Gillis, my Grandfather (Joseph Banks), his Grandmother on his Fathers side Elizabeth Gillis Warren, Husband of Lorenzo Warren (civil war 125th Reg.), she ran a boarding house in south Troy. 1. Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] ROLLCALL -TULLY and SHEA
    2. Mary Kohli
    3. All, This is Mary Brennan Kohli chiming in. I live in another cow town, Elkhorn, WI. My maternal grandparents were Patrick J. Tully and Ellen M. Shea, who were both born in the Graigues/Blackwood area of County Kildare. Pat born in 1854 and Ellen in 1857. He probably arrived in the US in 1880 and she in 1882. I have still not found any record of their marriage in Ireland, or US. Their first 2 children were baptized at St Joe's, Mary in 1883 and Catherine in 1884. Patrick and Ellen moved to Queens, N.Y.C. by 1886. Besides Ellen, at least 3 of her sisters came to Troy, married and raised their families in the Troy/Saratoga Springs area. they were Marie Shea Flynn, born 1860, Esther Shea Freeman, born 1862, and Catherine Shea Gilson, born 1863. A Patrick Tully is listed as living at 644 Fourth St in the Troy City Directory in 1883 and I have reason to believe that this was their home. I am guessing from other sources that this was a multi-family residence, since another relative was listed at that address. Patrick is listed as being a puddler. For Andrea, my dad James F Brennan was born in Moygara, County Sligo. I have some books that deal with the history of the area during the period 1914-1921, and of the Keash-Culfada community, where one of his cousins grew up. Let me know if you are interested. 2. K Ray
    3. Hi folks   Ken Ray Dunedin, Floirda (originally from Watervliet and Clifton Park)   My Rea's (Ray's) came to America from Rasharkin Parish, County Antrim in 1887.  There were 7 children that made the trip on the boat across the Atlantic and settled in Lansingburgh on 6th Ave.  Robert Rea, my great grandfather, had the family named changed to Ray at the time of his naturalization because it was not pronounced the way it was in Ireland.    The family had many friends and relatives move from the same general vicinity of Ireland to the Troy area.  McCochrane (McCaughern-in Ireland) was my great grandmother's maiden name, and many McCochrane's lived in Troy for many years.  McAuley and Cairns names came through marriages of some of the original Ray's.  Warren was my grandmother's maiden name, Pittstown and Schagticoke were home to many of the Warren's.  The McAuley's had a coffee business on River Street for many years and the Cairns' had a grocery store on broadway, Watervliet for years.   I am looking for the early Rea families of a townland called Ballydonnelly, Rasharkin Parish, County Antrim.  There were 5 Rea farm families all living next to one another there and I can't find the relationship of them all.  My gr, gr grandfather was named Charles Rea and would love to know his father's name and other siblings names.

    1. Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] ROLLCALL - CARR and GOULD
    2. Bradford H Miter
    3. I'm Brad Miter - SW Ohio I have two famous Troy 2nd Generation Irish ancestors: My GrGrandfather 1st Lt. George Gould and his sister, Mary S. Gould. Their claims to fame were: Mary GOULD married Joseph Bradford CARR who rose to the rank of Major General during the 4 years of the Civil War. George GOULD, aside from his fame as my GrGrandfather, served as Aide de Camp to Maj Gen Carr, his brother-in-law, for the first two years of the Civil War. I know the names of the parents for both the Goulds and Gen. Carr and that they were from Ireland. But I have no idea of what part of Ireland any of them were from. The parents were: William CARR - (born about 1776) Ann (his wife) - (born about 1810 but more likely 1800) The Ages are really wacky - Census of 1830 indicates William >30 and <40; Ann >20 and <30. 1850 Census has William age 50 and Ann age 40. 1860 Census - William age 70 and Ann probably deceased. It appears Ann may have answered the door at the 1850 census and dropped 10 years off their age. In 1870 Census, William (living with son, Joseph) is listed as age 84 which equates to his 1776 birth year. I assume they couple were married in Ireland. Cannot find a naturalization record. William was a cigar maker in Troy. A blurb in a bio of Gen. Carr states, "BREVET MAJ.-GEN. JOSEPH BRADFORD CARR, U.S.V. was born in the city of Albany, N. Y., on the 16th of August, 1828. His parents were natives of the Emerald Isle, and came to this country in 1824." And, for the GOULD parents: Robert GOULD - Born 1805 in Ireland Mary (his wife) - Born 1808 in Ireland Birth Years extrapolated from 1850 census Robert was a grocer and took the family to Baie des Chaleurs, Quebec, Canada where both George and his sister, Mary were born. This period would have been roughly 1830-1840 as they missed both of those US Censuses. Other children were born in Troy starting in possibly 1839. I have reason to believe that they actually were in Troy prior to going to Quebec but can't find my reference. So, how does one track such common names back to the old country? Brad Miter

    2. Donna Wilson
    3. Hi, Fellow TIGS Members, I am from a little cow town in Elizabeth, Colorado, USA. We have 1 high school, and three traffic lights! I have been researching the Browne family from County Tipperary, and would love some help from any one living near the town of Nanagh or Roscrea. The first entry in our family's Bible was: Oliver Browne married Mary Sarah (or Sarah Mary) Grant 1795 in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly. But I have found nothing else about this first couple. Their 4th son, Cooper Crawford Browne married Deborah Owens of Roscrea, June 12, 1826. I have discovered they were married by Rev. Cuthbert Fetherstone; he was appointed Rector of Nanagh, County Tipperary in 1826. Their first 6 children were baptized in Roscrea; info provided by North Tipperary Genealogy Services for a pretty price! But I don't know in what church they would have been baptized (they were Church of England). I can't find where Cooper and Deborah were married, either, and I would love some help in these 3 areas. In 1852, Cooper, Deborah, and 2 of their remaining children immigrated to New York. Cooper and Deborah visit an older daughter, Eliza Jane, who had come earlier and was a servant to a farming family in Stillwater, New York. Cooper and Deborah then move to New York City. Later, Eliza Jane joined her sister, Mary Ellen (Browne) Davis and her new husband, Charles S. Davis, who were living in Troy. My family has had roots in Troy/Green Island from that point until sometime in 1970. Surnames are: Browne, Davis, Gardner, Saner, and Foley. The Saner and Foley branches are gone now. The Gardner family was large and I feel strongly there are Gardners in Troy/Green Island who are a part of my family. I have been trying to find the cemetery where my grandmother is buried, but with no luck. Her name was Elsie Grace (Gardner) Saner b. 26 May 1899, Green Island d. 8 Aug. 1965, Troy. If anyone knows of her burial place, I would love to come visit with her. Thank you very much, Donna from Colorado

Start out your subject line with ROLLCALL and follow it up with your surnames of interest. In the body of your message, give us your name and the part of the country/world in which you reside. Follow that up with any special information you may already have for the surnames in the subject line. I would suggest that you only have one or two surnames per message and send multiple messages if you have a lot of interests. A reminder. Most of us have the option set in our email to include the original message in our reply. This can become particularly onerous if various folks have previously replied to the same email(s) and the quoted material builds up. Please delete out extraneous material before hitting the send button. This situation is not too bad if you are receiving individual messages from the TIGS list. However, the TIGS list also has an option to accumulate the messages and send them out to you once a day in DIGEST mode. You can imagine that it is really a pain to try and get past all the quoted material when there are 5 or 10 unedited messages in the digest. 1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] 2009 TIGS Dues
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. Dear TIGS Member: It's dues time again. Dues of $10.00 per family are due as of January 1, 2009 and cover the period January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009. If you were one of the many paid TIGS member for 2008, we want to thank you very much for your past support of TIGS, and we hope you will continue that support by renewing your membership for 2009. If you are on the TIGS mailing list and are not already a paid member, we hope that you will consider becoming one this year. TIGS dues have enabled us to purchase a much needed lap top computer for use in scanning and copying records for the TIGS website. We have also purchased four books of the St. Mary's Church, Troy, records on burials and Baptisms for $200.00 and donated them to the Troy Public Library for use in their Genealogy Room. These books will be a great resource for genealogy researchers. The three Baptism books have 24,040 records and the burial book has 5,591 records. More recently we have donated $100.00 to the Burden Iron Museum operated by the Hudson Mohawk Gateway towards the restoration of the Burden Office Building. Dues checks are made payable to: TIGS and mailed to: Catherine L. McGrath TIGS Treasurer 48 Bayberry Dr Clifton Park, NY 12065 On the first page of the TIGS website: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ clicking on "JOIN TIGS NOW!" will bring up the membership form which also has complete instructions for mailing your dues. I will be out of town for two months starting at the end of January. While mail will be forwarded to me, it would be helpful if dues were mailed earlier in the month of January. Best wishes to you for a Happy New Year. Regards, Cathy McGrath TIGS Treasurer Clifton Park, NY
