    1. Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Catherine Armstrong
    2. Alison Coleman
    3. On Thurs and Fri, I worked on getting through Catherine's Surrogate Court record. As I think I mentioned before, one of the beneficiaries of her will contested the list of her assets and stated that her funeral and burial were not commensurate with her station in life (like too much money was spent)--so depositions were taken from the beneficiaries and family. There are dozens of pages of this testimony and I was excited that we would learn a lot about life back then--except the scribe (attorney? court stenographer?) who recorded the entire thing has ILLEGIBLE handwriting! I plan to go back there on Thurs to work on it more, but I was deeply dismayed and frustrated, feeling like a treasure chest just could not be opened. Are there people who make a living from deciphering horrible handwriting? Anyone know? ________________________________________ From: [email protected] [[email protected]] On Behalf Of O'Brien, David [[email protected]] Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 10:08 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Catherine Armstrong I agree. I was taken by the story too. I grew up in Albany and my mom was from Troy but I've lived in Alexandria, VA for many years. In the summers, I'm a "host dad" for interns from Northern Ireland and the Republic as part of something called the Washington Ireland Program---it's related to Project Children. One of the interns who stayed with me came from nearby Maguires' Bridge in Fermanagh which in turn is not far from where I determined my Troy great grandmother, Rebecca Dolan O'Neil, was originally from. I forwarded Catherine's story to him. We'll see if he knows some Armstrongs. Thanks for sharing this. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Kevina Munnich Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 9:43 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Catherine Armstrong This is what genealogy is all about. 3. When you say you haven't found death records, have you checked the "Mt Ida" Troy burial records (which contain more than just burials in Mt Ida)? In my own research, scanning these records for the 5 year period after the last census in which someone "disappeared" often revealed a death. If you find a burial, you can check if there are cemetery records for others in the same plot. This year we are thrilled to announce that we have a full slate to offer, with the addition of a new name.? It is wonderful to have new folks interested in keeping TIGS one of  the best genealogy groups on the web.     Running for President:? Timothy Stone - Tim served as VP this past year and did a stand up job of stepping up to the plate when our President, Gerri Sherri, had to step down due to personal issues.? A special thanks to retiring officer; Gerri Sherri, who during her short term as President gave her all to keep TIGS running smoothly.? 1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Greetings + researching surnames Brereton and Langford
    2. Lela Butts
    3. Hi all, new member here--I just want to say thank you so much for all your research, and especially for sharing it with people like myself. I am descended from yet another Trojan Irishman: Michael Brereton, an iron moulder. He was born around 1844 in Ireland (exact location unknown) and immigrated to Cincinnati with his parents and siblings in the 1850's. I first found him in the 1860 Cincinnati census. He then relocated by himself to Troy around 1866, where he started a family and lived until his death (date unknown, but sometime after 1905). He married Mary Ann Langford around 1870, who was also of Irish ancestry. (I don't know anything about her parents; she had a sister named Ellen.) Michael and Mary had 7 children that I know of, who were all born in Troy. One was my great-grandfather John Joseph Brereton (b. Troy 1883, d. Troy 1951). He married Bertha Fratt Grobe, daughter of William H. Grobe and Ida Waite. All the Grobes are buried in Oakwood Cemetery. 1. Do any of these names (esp. the Irish surnames - Brereton and Langford) ring any bells with anybody? Most of my info so far is limited to US & NYS censuses. I also contacted all the Catholic churches that the family is known to have attended, but none could find any info for me. FYI, I have seen "Brereton" spelled in alternate ways (Brearton, Brierton, Brewerton to name a few) but this is our official family spelling going as far back as the first Troy generation. 2. I live in Dutchess County and should probably take a day trip to Troy for research. Where should I stop if I'm looking for basic birth/death/marriage info, as well as other records that might specifically tell me what part of Ireland the Breretons are from? I'm also not sure whether Michael Brereton's naturalization info would be in Troy or Cincinnati . . . 3. As a general question: Might anyone have any insight as to why an Irish iron worker would leave his family in Ohio to go to Troy--e.g., would he have had friends from Ireland in Troy, or did immigrants typically move for the job prospects, etc.? Apologies for the lengthy email--obviously I have a lot of questions and I appreciate everyone indulging me by reading it! Cheers, Lela Butts [email protected]

    2. Alison Coleman
    3. Thank you all! The Armstrongs from Maguires Bridge who are on Facebook have not been responsive to me yet--they are likely the young ones who are less interested in geneology. Yesterday I started reading surrogate court records on Catherine--there is a big file, which Kathy at the RCHS found--I will be reading more today. I don't have details yet (I read on my lunch break) but someone contested the execution of her will based on the funeral expenses (which seemed a bit extravagent to me--9 yards of lace, white kid slippers, 7 carriages) being not commensurate with Catherine's station in life--and a reference to clothing and jewelry not included in the list of assets. So there might be some drama involved! 3. Catherine had a great sense of Irish wit and humor! Usually the head of house was a man and referred to as"Himself" . The lady, especially if she was the breadwinner or even his spouse was referred o as "Herself". So she must have had a bit of money to be able to buy such a stone and to use the caption on it shows she thought a lot of herself, and it could also be that she ruled the roost and was mockingly called "Herself" by herself or the family.
