An interesting article in Sunday's, June 3, 2012 edition of the Times Union made a connection with a name that is also listed in a new Troy Irish Genealogy Society, data base that is currently being worked on. (TIGS website address: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ ) On Page 6 of the Unwind Section, there is an article "Charming Spot For Tea And More" about a new teahouse located in a farmhouse built by Revolutionary War veteran Ebenezer Hills, Jr. in 1785. The article goes on to say that it became the infamous trysting spot of Van Rensselaer scion Elsie Whipple and handyman Jesse Strang, whose affair led to the murder of Elsie's husband at Cherry Hill Farm. The hanging of Strang in 1827, Albany's last public execution, drew 30,000 spectators. The new TIGS project being worked on is the removals from the old State Street Burial Grounds, now the site of Washington Park in Albany. The "Cherry Hill" mention immediately caught my attention as on Saturday I was working on the removal names of those individuals that were reburied in St. Peter's Episcopal Church Cemetery and I remembered having just typed an entry that mentioned "Cherry Hill" That entry, that I typed on Saturday which makes the connection with the story in today's Times Union, was as follows: John Whipple, age 34, died May 7, 1827. Whipple was the son of a Revolutionary War Officer. He was murdered at Cherry Hill. Thought this email would be of interest to list members. Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY .

This is interesting..I have been reading pages and pages of barely-legible surrogate court records (thankfully her will was contested by one of her heirs, so there were depositions, etc) and it looks like Catherine's mom died when she was little and to some extent, she was raised by her brother, who was the executor of her will. The deciphering is really, really slow and painful but I am getting the notion that she came here somehow at an early age and then sent for her brother and paid his way. She had mortgages on 2 Troy houses and paid off her sister's mortgage in Michigan--and was a domestic! In 1870 the census has her as a domestic for the Warren family in Troy. They moved to Cooperstown (or maybe had another house there?) and she was there for a few years before becoming ill with cancer and moving in with her niece (last name seems to be Folmsbee) at 71 Thirteenth St. So she had $1700 in Troy Savings and mortgages, paid for her own funeral, burial and monument (not with the $1700), the hearse and 7 carriages, etc., specified that her estate would pay for headstones at $100 each for 3 or 4 relatives--and then there is the contested $600 of clothes and jewelry. An interesting and resourceful woman indeed!! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Kathleen Secker Sent: Friday, June 01, 2012 5:15 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Catherine Armstrong I just went through Pat Connors cemetery sight for Lansingburg's Old Catholic Cemetery for McGuire and I found under that name erected by P. Lynn, and all listers, I checked at St. Joseph's rectory and found out that the school records were sent to Sacred Heart School for safekeeping/storage when St. Joseph's school closed. I also inquired about other records. They have not received any thing from the firm that was to publish the transcribed documents. According to Bill McGrath there has been some delay in the publishing process due to some deaths in the chain of command at the publishing company. The church secretary told me the current procedure for researching issues is to write out what exactly you are looking for and supply her with as much information as you can relative to topic, and any dates and specific names. She will do the research in the documents which are no longer available to the public. I have not yet tried Sacred Heart School but I will over the next couple of days attempt to find out what records they have and how accessible those records are. Good Morning Ed: Nice to hear from you and hope to see you at a future meeting. The American-Canadian group photocopied all the marriage and baptism records for St. Joseph's in Troy several years ago. They also copied records from the closed churches of St. Lawrence's (German Parish) and Holy Trinity (Polish Parish) which are housed at St. Joseph's. Transcribing of the data is done in New Hampshire and then is subject to two different proof readings. However, according to Kay Brearton, one of the volunteers working on St. Joseph's records, "a major player in New Hampshire passed away not too long ago and they are in a transitional phase so at this point we don't know when St. Joseph's records will be completed and sent to the printers." It is TIGS intention to purchase a set of the books and donate them to the Troy Library once they are published. Regards, Bill > Stan, I'll be happy to inquire. Hello, we will be in Troy June 3 to 8 doing some research. Is there a TIGS meeting scheduled for that week? Thank you. John
Stan, I'll be happy to inquire. I do recall that a few years ago when I was able to be more active in TIGS, a Canadian publisher arranged for the copying/transcribing of some records which were to be published and made available to TIGS. I don't know if that project was ever completed. Bill McGrath may have some information on that or our own meeting minutes may show something. I have been inactive for several years due to conflicting schedules. I still read all the posts and I am happy to help out when I can.
