Hi Listers, Thanks for mentioning me, but other than clean up, which was shared by Gerri Sherry, Kelly did it all. I was happy though to do some pre-tasting just to be sure everything was safe to eat. As a student at St. Peters School in the 60's some of the girls were required to go to the Little Sisters of the Poor mone on 9th St and volunteer to help out, I often served meals, pushed residents in wheelchairs around and sometimes just sat and visited with them. It was dismal to me as a young girl but the residents always seemed content and well cared for. According to a book on google books, The LSOTP came to Troy in 1872-1873. The home in Troy was due entirely to the initiative of the Society of St Vincent De Paul, and with the assistance of the Society of St Vincent de Paul the sisters secured a building valued at $12,000 and within a year were caring for 100 aged persons. > http://www.littlesistersofthepoor.org/contactus > > -------------------------------------------------- > From: "M McAlonie" <[email protected]> > Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2012 1:38 PM > To: "TIGS" <[email protected]> > Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Religious sisters ... Yes that is our family. Note Harriet is 5. These are the ones. 1900 doe't have either.John and Margaret Gleason later moved to 121 Second St. and well into the 1940's.Their daughter (Mary) Alice , married Thomas J. Mooney. I will be depositing family info with the Ren. Co Hist Soc. I think he went to St. Mary's or St. Joseph's. I know they are buried at St. Mary's Cem. There were a number of Gleason families in Troy, but only John H is our family.THANKS, KS ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amy La Pietra" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> > Click ON - "JOIN TIGS NOW!" to get form. > > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > ===NY-IRISH-GENSOC Mailing List=== > Time for Society Members to pay up their **2012 Dues**. Hi Kathleen. In the 1880 Census there is a Margaret Gleason aged 14 living with her family in the 10th Ward of Troy at 272 N. Second St. If you go to the Pat Connors website from the TIGS website there is a wealth of information. Her site is wonderful. Click on resources and then scroll down to websites to the Connors website. Good Luck. Ps.. in the 1865 NYS census there is a Margaret who is 10 years old and 1/2 orphan ! living at an orphan home. You can find this through Pat's site also. Not sure about the situation in other parishes or institutions, but the Sisters of Mercy arrived in St. Patrick's parish, West Troy (Watervliet) in 1872, joined by the Sisters of the Presentation in 1881. The Daughters of Charity were also active in the Troy area from 1848 on. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Kathleen Secker" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2012 3:51 PM To: <[email protected]> Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Religious sisters > Were there any other religious sisters, other than the Sisters of St. > Joseph of Carondelet, in the Troy area in the 1880 time frame? Have you used the New York State Vital Records indices? They start in 1880, though spotty for the first 20 or 30 years as compliance with the law improved. Not online, the microfiche are available at a number of library facilities in NYS. This is the link to the info page: http://www.archives.nysed.gov/a/research/res_topics_gen_vitalstats.shtml In what parish did these individuals reside (at birth, and at last 'sighting'? Or, if you do not know, what address(es)? That would give list users a decent starting point. - smb -------------------------------------------------- From: "Kathleen Secker" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2012 3:51 PM To: <[email protected]> Subject: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Religious sisters > Were there any other religious sisters, other than the Sisters of St. > Joseph of Carondelet, in the Troy area in the 1880 time frame? Were there any other religious sisters, other than the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, in the Troy area in the 1880 time frame? Does anyone know how to locate their order in the census? I know they had an orphanage and probably a school. I am trying to find 2 relatives -Margaret Gleason b @1866 and her sister Harriet b @1875. They are not in the 1900 census. So they either died between 1880 and 1900, married or went into the convent. Since they are not in the family plot, they could be in a religious plot or married and in their spouses' plots. Sisters of St. Joseph's doesn't have either of them. Kathleen S. PS Where will the July 19 meeting take place?
