    2. Tim, I have another event to attend, and I am unable to attend the TIGS meeting. My vote is to continue the meetings at Moscatellos, as we have our own meeting room and there is plenty of parking at the Moscatellos. Bill McMahon In a message dated 7/15/2012 9:45:47 P.M. 3. hello all... I sadly can't help Jaime but..... My cousin's son Liam Murray Bell, of Glasgow, Scotland, has written and published a novel on the Irish Troubles. Title: So It Is. He studied at the University of Belfast, has married a nice Irish girl :-) and did research on all the troubles as his curiosity on that part of the world increased. Sorry for shamelessly promoting his work...but I think it's a topic many of us would enjoy reading about. I believe you can order this from Amazon and barnes and Noble. Enjoy! 3. Hello, I am doing some research for a client and I'm wondering how I can find marriage information from around 1862 and birth information from 1873. I know New York didn't record civil records until after 1880. The family I am researching is Michael Fitzpatrick who married Maria Murray around 1862. I know they were Irish Catholic and even though they moved to New York City around 1880, Michael was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery when he died in 1904. I am also trying to find birth/baptism information for their son George M. Fitzpatrick, who was born in Troy in 1873. Can anyone help? I'm not sure which church they may have attended, but I assume it was St. Marys. Jaime Aulet

    3. Hello, David, I appreciate your posting book recommendations and I agree with you that "Irish Immigrants in the Land of Canaan ..." and Thomas Flanagan's books are both great. I have the first and have dipped into it (though not read it cover to cover) and I have Flanagan's book and read it years ago. There's some confusion though since I did not post the note about the Corbetts and Robert Emmett. The author was a woman named Joan. I too was rather confused to see my name in the "From" slot. It appears a couple of notes somehow got mixed together; I had posted an earlier reply to the message. I have just found something that may respond to Joan's question. In Thomas Pakenham's book, The Year of Liberty / The Great Irish Rebellion of 1798, there is a painting of the United Irish Patriots of 1798. Among them is a W. Corbet. Also listed were R. Emmet and T.A. Emmet. The name is also listed a second time in the book's index; apparently there is/was a Corbet Hill in Wexford that was a scene of some of the fighting. Joan, where were your Corbetts from? I'll try to look for more later. You may also be interested in "Irish Immigrants in the Land of Canaan: Letters and Memoirs from Colonial and Revolutionary America, 1675-1815". Kerby A. Miller (Editor), Arnold Schrier (Editor), Bruce D. Boling (Editor), David N. Doyle (Editor) The last is superb. Robert Emmet's older brother Thomas who played more of a role in the in United Irish movement and was imprisoned after the rising in 1798 is featured along with his letters. Thomas eventually emigrated to America against the strong efforts of the Federalists who saw the United Irishmen as a threat to their party and the natural allies of Thomas Jefferson's Republicans. Thomas became an extraordinarily successful lawyer and friend to Irish immigrants in NYC. When he died around 1825, his funeral was the largest public event to that point in the city. Finally, I never tire of recommending Thomas Flanagan's "The Year of the French", perhaps the best historical fiction ever written about Ireland and telling the story of the ill-fated collaboration of the French under General Humbert and the United Irishmen in Mayo before their defeat at Ballinamuck in Longford. 1. [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Current spate of Spam Messages!

    3. This morning I was advised by a list member, and by an Unsubscribe message from RootsWeb, that she had been unsubscribed from our List. When I re-subscribed her to the List I included the following explanation as I understand it: Thank you for notifying me that you wish to remain subscribed. The reason for your removal was probably because a certain SPAM operation used your email address. There have been many, many of this type of SPAM message recently and the RootsWeb management have had to set up an automated way to stop the flow. The Spam messages at present have two identifying characteristics: 1. The Subject Line is usually blank and 2. There is a one-line URL in the message and no other text. The List Administrators will no longer see the actual message, only an 'Unsubscribe Notice.' I am assuming this is what has happened to you. It is our understanding that a very large number of 'AOL' accounts were hacked into recently but the Spam messages are not all from AOL customers. One suggestion that might or might not help for the future - "Change your account password on AOL". I don't know if your address will be used again so we will give re-subscribing you a try. Let me know if it happens again. Regards, Brad Miter, TIGS List Administrator

    3. Good Morning Rebecca: Yes, we will put Watervliet Churches on the TIGS website. We have just recently added St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet. Thanks for your offer to record the Dutch Reformed Church for our website. By the way, St. John's Presbyterian Church in Troy, which you documented, will shortly be added to the TIGS website. Thanks for all your work. 3. Bill - I was doing some research at the Watervliet Hist. Society on Thurs (in the old Reformed Church). They were showing me around the church sanctuary which they use in the summer months (no heat in winter). I couldn't help but notice the 8 windows with inscriptions, plus a few other plaques around. They gave me permission to record the information, which I will do sometime soon. I have a history of the church from a lecture that they did recently. I assume we can put Watervliet church info on our church memorials website? Thanks, Rebecca
