Thanks Kathleen, I enjoyed meeting you also....if you have something that you have written, about Troy,my blog will be coming out shortly, and I will welcome any contributions. I think that you were from out of town and do not remember how you are connected to Troy exactly, but if you have any Troy memoires that you would like to contribute, hold on to them, and I will let you know when the blog is finally set up. Hoping to see and chat with you at another meeting, sometime in the future. Bill is unable to post to the TIGS list at this time, so I am posting the following message for him. Jeanne Keefe ANNOUNCING NEW DATABASE BOOK 2 - INTERMENT INDEX ST. MARY'S CEMETERY, TROY NEW YORK INTERMENT YEARS - May 1910- December 1918 A. Book 2, part of a multi-volume set of Interment Records at St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy, NY, which includes 3,434 names, has now been added to the Troy Irish Genealogy website. You can view these interment records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/<http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/> click on TIGS PROJECTS and then click on ST. MARY'S CEMETERY, TROY, NY - INTERMENT RECORDS. B. This new data series of interment records list an individuals name, date of death and age at death. In a large number of records, the age is reported in years, months and days. Some entries without a date of death, are re-interments to or from another cemetery. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. C. Researchers having relatives with a CAPITAL DISTRICT area connection, will be interested in these on-line, name searchable, records of names of individuals who were interred in St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy, NY. If you live in a nearby county or even further away, you might want to check out these names. Take a look at the data base, you never know what you will find. D. The TIGS website has a PRINTABLE FORM that can be used to request more information from the Albany Diocesan Cemeteries. Mailing instructions and fees (only $5.00) are on the request form. Additional items that may be available from the full interment record may include: 1. LATE RESIDENCE: While many of the records in Book 2 show only the name of the city as the late residence, 1,418 of the records will show a house number and a Troy street address. 2. INTERMENT DATE: The date of interment in St. Mary's Cemetery may be another clue which will be helpful to genealogy and family researchers. 3. SECTION/LOT#: The section and lot number may be another clue which will be helpful to genealogy and family researchers. 4. UNDERTAKER: The name of the undertaker may be another clue which will be helpful to genealogy and family researchers. E. The following information on the 3,434 deaths will be of interest: 1. No age was reported for 243 names and 108 records were identified as "Still Born". 2. A breakdown of the other deaths by age groups shows: Under 1 year - 196 names. Age 1 to 10 - 326 names. Age 11 to 19 - 97 names. Age 20 to 29 - 277 names. Age 30 to 39 - 376 names. Age 40 to 49 - 364 names. Age 50 to 59 - 438 names. Age 60 to 69 - 436 names. Age 70 to 79 - 292 names. Age 80 to 89 - 69 names. Age 90 to 99 - 9 names. Age 100+ - 1 name. 3. A number of reported deaths in this series of records were attributed to the 1918 Spanish Flu. This epidemic, which started January 1918 and ran through December 1920, killed between 50 and 100 million people worldwide. F. Nearly all of the 3,434 interment records showed some indication of residence. Those records will be of interest to researchers outside of the Troy Area as they identify residences in numerous cities and towns throughout New York State as well as 18 other states and Canada. While most of the records were for the Capital District Area, other areas throughout New York State were reported. Some specifics on residence information follow: 1. The following NYS locations had three or more records: Albany-64, Brunswick-22, Cohoes-32, Colonie-14, Grafton-3, Green Island-84, Mechanicville-8, North Greenbush-16, Poughkeepsie-46, Rensselaer-6, Sand Lake-6, Saratoga Springs-3, Schaghticoke-4, Schenectady-13, Troy-2,191 including 1,420 with street addresses, Utica-4, Waterford-3, and Watervliet-119. 2. The following NYS locations had 2 records: Buffalo, Cambridge, Glenville, Pittstown, Rome, Scotia, Syracuse, Valley Falls, and Voorheesville, 3. The following NYS locations had 1 record: Ballston Spa, Bath, Binghamton, Chatham, Cooperstown, Ghent, Glens Falls, Greenwich, Highland, Hillsdale, Hoags Corner, Hudson, Lake George, Lake Placid, Malone, Monticello, Newburgh, Ovid, Port Chester, Rochester, Salem, Schodack, Verona, West Crescent, Whitehall, Wynantskill, and Yonkers. 4. For the New York City area, there were 10 records for Brooklyn, 46 records for New York City and 1 record for Long Island. Eleven records indicated "New York" so it is unclear if this meant New York State or New York City. 5. There were a number of records from the neighboring states of Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut and New Jersey. Connecticut has 3 records, Massachusetts had 8 records, Vermont had 2 and New Jersey had 15 records. 6. Residence was also indicated from the following states: California, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. 7. The only foreign country listed was Canada. 8. The following organizations were indicated as the residence; Maternity Hospital-19, Rensselaer County Hospital-48, Samaritan Hospital-76, Marshall Sanitarian-8, Troy Hospital-220, Home for the Aged-22, House of Good Shepherd-7, Troy Lakeview Sanitarian-68, St. Vincent's Orphan Asylum-2, and St. Joseph's Home-39. G. There are now 11,897 interment records in the three Books of St. Mary's Cemetery records now on-line on the TIGS website. Book 4 of St. Mary's interments records is now being transcribed by the volunteer transcribers working on this project. Hopefully you will find some of your ancestors listed in these interment records or in the various other data series on the Troy Irish Genealogy website. Other recent additions to the TIGS website were the Nail Factory Cemetery in Troy, New York and the addition of two more churches to the Church Memorials and Family Names data base; St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Watervliet, New York and St. John's Episcopal Church in Troy, New York. These records will be found under the PROJECTS section of the website. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY Jeanne M. "Digitization of Troy Sentinel provides way to access history" http://www.troyrecord.com/articles/2012/07/24/news/doc500e1c962d37f124187691.txt I don't know why this is not showing as a link, but cut and paste into your browser for great news in todays' Troy Record. Library Director Paul Hicok said the newspaper was sent out Monday to be digitized and, in a month, they will receive it back in a PDF format. The collection will be all electronic and will eventually be offered on the library’s website to view. The famous poem "‘Twas The Night Before Christmas" was first published in the building and in the Troy Sentinel newspaper on Dec. 23, 1823. The Troy Public Library is the first library in the world to provide digital access to the historic newspaper. The firm transported the collection from the Troy Public Library this morning with the assistance of Focused Technologies, of Menands, and will be digitized by Kirtas Technologies, Inc., a company that specializes in document imaging in Victor. The Troy Sentinel eventually evolved into today’s Record. Kris Ayotte

Thanks Mary Lee. Sorry for the confusion. Good work on Thomas Pakenham's book. David -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mary Lee Dunn Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2012 9:39 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] Books on and patriots in the Rising of'98 Hello, David, I appreciate your posting book recommendations and I agree with you that "Irish Immigrants in the Land of Canaan ..." and Thomas Flanagan's books are both great. I have the first and have dipped into it (though not read it cover to cover) and I have Flanagan's book and read it years ago. There's some confusion though since I did not post the note about the Corbetts and Robert Emmett. The author was a woman named Joan. I too was rather confused to see my name in the "From" slot. It appears a couple of notes somehow got mixed together; I had posted an earlier reply to the message. I have just found something that may respond to Joan's question. In Thomas Pakenham's book, The Year of Liberty / The Great Irish Rebellion of 1798, there is a painting of the United Irish Patriots of 1798. Among them is a W. Corbet. Also listed were R. Emmet and T.A. Emmet. The name is also listed a second time in the book's index; apparently there is/was a Corbet Hill in Wexford that was a scene of some of the fighting. Joan, where were your Corbetts from? I'll try to look for more later. Robert Emmet's older brother Thomas who played more of a role in the in United Irish movement and was imprisoned after the rising in 1798 is featured along with his letters. Thomas eventually emigrated to America against the strong efforts of the Federalists who saw the United Irishmen as a threat to their party and the natural allies of Thomas Jefferson's Republicans. Thomas became an extraordinarily successful lawyer and friend to Irish immigrants in NYC. When he died around 1825, his funeral was the largest public event to that point in the city. Finally, I never tire of recommending Thomas Flanagan's "The Year of the French", perhaps the best historical fiction ever written about Ireland and telling the story of the ill-fated collaboration of the French under General Humbert and the United Irishmen in Mayo before their defeat at Ballinamuck in Longford. Does anyone have RICKARD's from Troy? I stumbled across this listing when looking for something else on E-bay. There are photographs of a RICKARD family of Troy NY listed on Ebay at this time. I have no connection to RICKARD or to the seller, just happened to see it and will pass along the Item # in case someone has a RICKARD connection: Item # 170880369117 on E-bay. Donna
Discussions at the last few TIGS meetings make it obvious that this valuable resource needs to be updated. TIGS has a great deal of folks who personally either own or have access to information that others are looking for. The "Irish Acts of Kindness List" consists of volunteers who have agreed to do look-ups from sources they own, subscribe to or have access to. The current list of over 70 resources is available to anyone who avails themselves to our website. The resources include but are not limited to the following categories: Church Records Cemetery Records Immigration Records City Directories Irish Resources School Records Local History Miscellaneous Other I know I have been contacted by several list members to correct an email address, update their resources, etc. Here is a sample of the layout and information this is displayed: Irish Passenger Lists, Brian Mitchell 1847-1871 Kristin Cooney-Ayotte [email protected] To view the current list go to the TIGS website http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytigs, choose the RESOURCES link at the top of the page, scroll down to "Look Ups....". I am hoping on a lucky shamrock that many of the volunteers listed are still on the TIGS list. BUT I am also asking for ANYONE who has these resources to step up and volunteer to keep this valuable resource available. Rather than go back and make corrections to the original list, would everyone (including those already on the list) send me the name of your resource, the category it would fit into, dates the resource applies to and your current e-mail address, etc. PLEASE email me OFF LIST, in the subject line type "Irish Acts of Kindness". Since some list members are not on line as frequently as some of us, we will give it a month, with reminders. Then a new list will be compiled and our wonderful Webmaster, Jeanne, will be asked to remove the current and replace with the new as time permits. Looking forward to a barrage of e-mails. Thanks Kris Cooney-Ayotte

Could you please see if there is a marriage for Michael Fitzpatrick and Maria Murray around 1862? I am also trying to find birth information for George M. Fitzpatrick who was born in Troy around 1873. Thank you SO much! Jaime, Since it appears there isn't a TIGS volunteer who has the books for St. Mary's, I'd suggest calling the Troy Public Library and asking the Reference desk if they can do a lookup. Depending on how busy they are, they might do the lookup on spot. The phone number is 518 274 7071 Good luck! Lynn
Bill, Thank you very much for the information. I have checked the look-up list from the website, but do not see a listing for St. Mary's in Troy. Am I missing it? I looked through the list about 4 times and didn't see it.
