Ida Cemetery, Mt. Ida Preservation Hall and more!! The TIGS meeting this month will consist of a tour of Old Mt. Ida Cemetery, the Mt. Ida Preservation Hall and the former Farnham Institute. Thursday October 18th 5:45 PM We will meet at 5:45 at the Old Mt. Ida Cemetery, you can pull right into the cemetery and park along the roadways. Weather permitting, we will take a tour of the cemetery. We will then walk from the cemetery to the Mt. Ida Preservation Hall (Church of the Ascension). There we will have a talk on the building and the stain glassed windows. The owner of the former Farnham Institute (formerly a school connected to the Church of the Ascension) has invited us into the building which is located directly across the street from the Hall. The building has been converted into a private residence. The first floor retains its original floor plan and is used as an art space. The walk from the cemetery to the Hall is a short distance but there is major construction all along the way. with little if any sidewalk. There is no closer parking available because of the construction. Brant Caird and/or Ned Pratt will be hosting us. We should meet promptly at 5:45 as it gets dark early, hopefully it will not be raining. I assume if it is raining we will meet and walk directly to the Hall, everyone should be prepared to walk just short of a typical city block. Please respond if you plan on attending so that we can get an idea of attendance. Kristin Cooney-Ayotte "}" id=".reactRoot[8]"Like
I think I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I was reading John Kelly's "The Graves Are Walking" about the Great Famine. I finished it yesterday. I thought it was excellent, but it's not easy to read. The suffering he describes is unimaginable, and the British insistence on a free market solution is criminal. Both Troy and Albany are mentioned. I'm researching my gg grandparents, Edward Hooley and Bridget Canfield who arrived in Green Island in Black 47. I feel I know them better from having read this book. Best, David
I will NOT be able to attend the TIGS mtg as I will be at the Lansingburgh Historical Society Benefit, same night same hours. If a decision is made on a date for our Genealogy Lookup Day, please let me know. I am willing to bring my laptop and do lookups thru my Ancestry account. Also Kris, I have the Victorian Stroll marked, to be in costume for TIGS at RCHS. Can decide time later. I would only be a local issue if all the local TIGS members refused to do lookups for us. I know, though, that it would be nice to be able to browse for ourselves. I would certainly be willing to contribute significantly more than $10 if I could access the newpaper online, but there may be an easier way. The Library of Congress has newspapers online, and may be happy to get the Troy Record. Failing that, perhaps Genealogy Bank, though they would require a subscription to access it. This sounds like fun. Leitrim Roots Festival 2013 Leitrim Genealogy Centre is organising a fourth Leitrim Roots Festival for September 2013. The Centre was set up in 1986 to deal with enquiries from people who wished to trace their Leitrim ancestry and is the official genealogy service for County Leitrim. We are part of the Irish Family History Foundation's network of Centre's throughout Ireland and we provide a full time professional genealogy service for County Leitrim. The difficulty faced by many people who travelled from many lands to trace their Leitrim ancestors was that source material was scattered throughout the County and elsewhere. In the years since the foundation of the Centre we have been collecting, indexing and computerising all the major sources for family history research, work that continues at present. It is estimated that there are one million people in the United States alone, with Leitrim Ancestry. It is hard to believe that a county with a population of over 31,000 people could have such extensive links with another country. There are also large numbers in England, Canada and Australia with Leitrim ancestry. The Leitrim Roots Festival is different to other festivals and coach tours because it is a festival of Heritage and Culture with a strong emphasizes on Genealogy. Visitors will be guided around the county of which their ancestors came from, visiting sites of interests and sites of relevance. It is a week long programme where they will engage with the local communities and find out more about the county their ancestors came from. This Festival will also be attractive to people who wish to have a genuine Irish experience. >From research that was conducted through previous such events it was evident that people wanted more of a cultural experience, to meet more locals and be a part of Leitrim for the duration of their stay. The programme for 2013 will tick all these boxes with a day specifically set aside for people to meet with locals relevant to the area of their ancestors. People who were born in Leitrim will also find this festival of great interest, it is often said that many Leitrim people do not know their own county well enough and the many things there are to see and experience in the County. This is a key event to highlight "Leitrim" to people overseas and also fits in very well with the Failte Ireland The Gathering initiative which is all about inviting the Irish Diaspora overseas to return for a visit. The benefits of this Festival are countywide as the programme will take in many towns and villages over the 9 day period. This festival is also about creating awareness of what Leitrim has to offer so that people who may not be able to attend at the time of the festival will be encouraged to visit at another time. The Festival will take place from 20th September 2013 to 28th September 2013. A sample of events include:- * Arigna Mining Experience * Hurling expo * Visit to Genealogy Centre * St. Georges Heritage Centre Carrick on Shannon * Storytelling at Sean Mac Diarmada Homestead * Folk evening at Carrigallen * Trip down memory lane with Showband stars For any further information please contact:- Leitrim Genealogy Centre, Main Street, Ballinamore, Co. I am in favor of this "pass it forward" donation idea. Please let me know as soon as something is in place so I can forward a check. If I remember correctly, I have paid my dues for two years; but if I am mistaken, I will be more than happy to get a check in the mail ASAP as well as a second check for the Library to upgrade their server for the project that will be of great value to TIGS members. I wonder if TIGS could do something to help??? I would be willing to provide some support and all 250 of us sending in an extra $10 would provide $2,500 which certainly would pay for some additional storage capacity. Kris and Chris, After reading the article I see that the Library needs more capacity on their server before they can make the images available. I wonder if TIGS could do something to help??? Please check out the wonderful work the Mt. Ida Preservation Hall group is doing to preserve the history of this wonderful building. The Church of the Ascension played a role in the lives of many Trojans, our ancestors included. Old Mt. Ida and New Mt. Ida Cemeteries contain the remains of many of Troy's "Famous" folks as well as the ordinary, including families of TIGS members. These folks give tirelessly to maintain and restore Old Mt. Ida and should be applauded. Please check out their website, which includes a page where you can make a donation through PayPal to help in their efforts. Since this months meeting will not entail paying for dinner, I am encouraging those that attend to make a personal donation that night and TIGS should consider a donation to help in their efforts. http://www.mountidapreservationhall.org [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: Kris6851 <[email protected]> To: ny-troy-irish-gensoc <[email protected]> Sent: Wed, Oct 10, 2012 11:29 pm Subject: Re: [NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC] TIGS October Meeting; Tour of Old Mt.
