"Memorial Day" by Mrs. I. G. Braman (1910) http://doesnotevenrhyme.blogspot.com/2014/05/memorial-day-by-mrs-i-g-braman-1910.html One of a number of Memorial Day poems from Troy newspapers I posted recently, and I’ll be posting more. Mrs. Braman’s is somewhat unusual and moving. I don’t know if it’s based on someone real, or just poetic invention. Frances Mitchell Haswell Braman (1867-1945) (Mrs. Isaac Getty Braman) was Watervliet City Historian and is buried at Albany Rural Cemetery. Isaac Getty Braman’s father was Waters Whipple Braman, born in Troy, and the NYS Library in Albany has a collection of his letters: “In essence this is a fine collection of letters, in terms of their completeness and quality of content. Braman’s propensity to record his experiences in detail and at length is excellent. The letters chronicle the history of the 93rd New York Volunteers since he recounts many details of battles and campaigns in which his regiment participated, which included Antietam, Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Cold Harbor, Deep Bottom, and Petersburg Crater. These letters also include many candid observations, comments, and anecdotes about the activities of his fellow officers as well as life in the officers’ quarters." http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/msscfa/sc12780.htm At least one of the Bramans buried at Albany Rural, Clarence Braman, was transferred from Oakwood Cemetery. He died in 1877, and his burial card notes he was reinterred in 1901. Chris Philippo

"[Alexander] Walsh was born in 1783 in Duncannon, Tyrone, Ireland and emigrated in 1799 with his parents, Alexander Walsh Sr. (1737-1820) and Jan (Smith) Walsh (1740-1807). The elder Walsh opened a general store in the village and his successful business was continued for a number of years after his death by Alexander Jr. […] "He was one of the men responsible for the formation of both the Rensselaer County and New York State Agricultural Societies. He often constructed extensive displays for the Rensselaer County Fairs, and as a result of his frequent attendance at the annual State exhibitions, Walsh became known and respected throughout the East. […] “Walsh was one of the first proponents of the landscaped ‘rural cemetery.’ He also had an earnest desire that our citizens should do something to beautify their village burying places." Broderick, Warren. "Walsh Was Noted Horticulturalist." Troy Times. May 8, 1871: B20. For more see https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7Mt-S77wZKfLVpqTHU1Mzh5TTg/edit?usp=sharing In that linked document is an 1846 Troy Daily Whig article calling for a rural cemetery for Troy which noted “We publish below, as pertinent to the subject, a letter written by Alexander Walsh, Esq., of Lansingburgh, to the New York Horticultural Society, in 1833, and which led, we believe, to the purchase of the picturesque spot on Long Island, known as Greenwood Cemetery.” He could be said to have helped inspire Oakwood Cemetery, which does mention him on their website http://www.oakwoodcemetery.org/arts_archt.html Walsh himself is buried in Trinity Churchyard in Lansingburgh: http://dunhamwilcox.net/ny/lansingburg1.htm Some genealogical information about his family here: http://www.schenectadyhistory.org/families/hmgfm/walsh.html His home, according to Warren Broderick’s article, was on the NW corner of 4th Ave and 116th St - what’s now numbered 601 4th Ave. “Walsh was especially famous for his extensive gardens which lay to the north of ‘Elm Place’, his commodious house on the corner of John (4th Avenue) and Elizabeth (116th) Streets.” It still has a large yard, but nothing particularly interesting in it now: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.775527,-73.674281,3a,75y,284.3h,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sV0erUJ7E5l_Z88JHIJFrfQ!2e0 It wouldn’t be a bad spot for a historical marker http://www.wgpfoundation.org Christopher K. Knowing the parish is everything. I had very good luck in County Longford, once I identified the parish--I contacted the pastor of the church, who took an interest in my research, announced my info at the weekly Mass and put it in their bulletin, etc., and this connected me with current day Irish cousins (whom I finally got to meet last summer!). If you can find a link to a parish priest, you might want to give it a try. I sent a letter, including copies of old photos of my ancestors and a little outline of my family as it related to that parish. A quick search on Google reveals the following links concerning Parteen: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/parishes.htm http://www.limerickdioceseheritage.org/Parteen/textParteen.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mccarthykathryn/clare_church_records.htm Hope that helps, and feel free to contact me off list. I was unable to get in touch with Release of Information at the VA Hospital in Bath, but I did receive mail from the NA concerning Dennis McNamara and thought I would share: Dennis McNamara was born December 11, 1838 in Parteen, County Clare, Ireland. He married Catharine Ryan May 31, 1862 in Rutland, Vermont (but he states in one document that the county clerk there informed him that no record of marriage was kept that year). In 1898 he had three living children: Edward Dennis McNamara, born July 15, 1864 in Burlington, Vermont Mary Elizabeth McNamara, born August 13, 1876 in TROY, NY William Holmes McNamara, born October 25, 1878 in East Albany, NY The rootsireland.ie website turned up a Baptism record for Dennis McNamara, listing: Date of Baptism: 11-Dec-1838 Address: Athleenkard Parish: Parteen County: Clare Denomination: Roman Catholic Father: John McNamara Mother: Anna Holmes Sponsers: John Holmes and Bridget Kelly Does anyone have any suggestions about tracing the family, now that I have linked it back to Ireland? I would like to say a big Thank You to Pat Conners for her wonderful website - Connors Genealogy. Not only did I find my great grandmother with her information but I was fortunate enough to obtain a death certificate. After hitting many brick walls I was beginning to think she just dropped out of the sky and landed in Troy! On top of that I found her headstone along with another family member. Two TIG members were kind enough to brave the snow and rain to take photos for me. Thank you to Ed and Pat for their assistance. From another list on the Connors website I was able to locate my great uncle's naturalization papers. It was a great week of discovery for me. So a huge thank you to TIGS and its members for all the help. It is truly appreciated. Bev
Kathy, The Power's you were referring to was Mary Powers who lived at 430 First St. Her aunt also lived in the house and her name was Julia Fitzgerald. Pat
Thanks, Chris. Google Satellite images of Mount Ida Catholic Cemetery (southern portion of Mount Ida Cemetery on Pawling next to the pond): 2013 (before clearing off headstones, or maybe in the very beginning) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7Mt-S77wZKfX1BkS1p3UEtEUXc/edit?usp=sharing 2014 after clearing off many headstones https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7Mt-S77wZKfQnhFNFdyUzA0UXc/edit?usp=sharing Of course, a lot of them are probably covered over again by the mulching of grass and so on. Still have to work that problem out. There’s still others that were recorded there in the past which have yet to be re-located, and perhaps some that escaped being recorded previously, and aside from that no doubt a great many graves that were never marked (or marked with wood crosses or headboards long gone). Sara, I am a new member but have afforded myself the opportunity to use their site. Hence, I have attended a few of their meetings and I cannot tell you how happy I am. I was born in Troy (many moons ago) and still live here. The TIGS is a wonderful group. Their dedication and information/history given is so much appreciated. I am learning so much....love the meetings! Vote cast to accept the proposed slate of TIGS officers I probably should have included in my bio that, having also lived in the city of Troy from 1978-1990, my best (and maybe only) skill is parallel parking.
