James Alstrum (1845-1926) was born in Port Chester, N.Y. according to his marriage license. He enlisted in the Army in Poundridge, ny in 1862. He ran away from an orphanage to enlist. I've tried everything to locate this orphanage without success. He may have an older brother, John Alstrum. He settled in New Haven, CT after the civil war. He is my great, great grandfather. His parents might be Sarah and John Alstrum. Let me know if you have any information on him.

Am looking for admittance records, about 1870, for this home. Any suggestions welcome. Jeanne Durney Venice, FL
Maureen, My second great grandfather was the superintendent of the Kings County Nursery in Brooklyn 1865-1875 and after he left, a similar fate awaited the children of the Nursery. I don't know any specifics of the fire you spoke of, but in the mid to late 1800's cities solved their orphan children problems by shipping them west. The following is from John Cerny's “Research in Business Employment and Institutional Records": "The direction of Institutional care of orphans and neglected children changed course in the mid-nineteenth century. In 1854, forty-seven boys and girls between the ages of seven and fifteen boarded a train in New York City; they were destined for a rural community in southwestern Michigan. This was the beginning of an exodus that transferred well over 100,000 homeless children from cities such as Boston, New York and Cincinnati to entirely different lifestyles in small towns and farms in states in the Midwest, the South and the West." Perhaps your relatives were moved for the same reason and not the fire. Hi! I am looking for the names of children in orphanages in Brooklyn or New York City between 1840 and 1859. Joseph Nelson was born around 1836. His parents were Marcus Nelson and Mariam Hastings. In a city directory for 1849 (Brooklyn) Mariam is listed as the widow of Marcus. Thus he died between 1835 and 1839. Joseph spent time in an orphanage, but I don't know which one. Perhaps his mother could not take care of him. He moved to Ohio where he appears in the 1860 census. He lived a long life and died in his 90s in Union Co. Ohio. Any help appreciated,
