Cleaning out my email and found this! Are you still doing genealogy? I moved to a little town outside Kingston so know these towns well, running along 209. I should have some relatives buried in NY-Long Island. It would be interested in those grave locations. My immigrant ancestors Willem Gerritsen and wife Mary ? came to New Netherlands in 1659. >From Dr. Aline Garretson's article, "Gerritsen-Willemsen Family Record, and Williamson Family Record" (NYG&BR July 2002): From bible of Samuel Garritsen. In the year of our Lord 1659 my honorable mother with her husband Willem Gerritsen arrived in this land at Amersfoort -- >From Dr. Aline Garretson's article, In the year of our Lord 1662 my honorable mother's first husband the honorable Willem Gerritsen fell asleep in the Lord Quote from letter by Harry Macy, Jr, 300 East 33rd Street 5-D, New York, NY 10016-9406 to Rixford A. Beals, 2 Lexington Rd.,Somerton, NJ 08873: "The parentage of Willem Willemse is known. It is spelled out in a family record started by his half-brother Samuel Gerritsen, the original of which is held by the Brooklyn Historical Society. Mary (surname still unkown) was born in 1636 in Burmuda (of all places) and married there in 1650 William Gerritsen. Willem Willemse, the son of this couple, was born in 1653 in Burmuda, and in 1656 they had a son Cornelis. In 1659 Mary and William Gerritsen arrived in New Netherland. They had a daughter Sarah born 1660 and Hannah 1662. In 1662 William Gerritsen died, and in 1663 Mary married Gerrit Remmersen, a native of Friesland who had come to Amersfoort (Flatlands) in 1656. They had Anna, Rem, Samuel, Maria and Rachel, all of whom used the patronymic Gerritsen which became their surname. Mary (the mother of Willem Willemse) died in 1721 and was buried in Gravesend. Samuel Gerritsen, who kept the record from which all of the above is taken, also had this entry which I will quote in full: "In the year of our Lord 1722 the 2nd of February my brother William Willemsen fell asleep in the Lord on a Friday evening about 7 o'clock and was buried on a Tuesday after aged about 70 years." There is no more in this record about Willem, but there is no question that he is your Willem Willemse who married Mayken Wyckoff. The Hannah who married Marten Wyckoff was his sister. Kenney Award April 4 is the nomination deadline Individuals and organizations are invited to submit nominations for the Alice P. Kenney Award given by the New Netherland Institute (NNI). The annual award of $1,000 is supported by the Alice P. Kenney Memorial Trust Fund. The deadline is April 4. The recipient may be a person or a group that has made a significant contribution in the form of research, teaching, writing, and speaking or in other pursuits of any aspect of Dutch colonial life in North America. Emphasis is on those activities which reach a broad, popular audience in the same way that Dr. Kenney's activities did. Three copies of all material must be submitted. More information about the nominating process is available by emailing nyslfnn@mail.nysed.gov, by calling the NNI office at (518) 486-4815, or by writing to: The Alice P. Box 2536, Empire State Plaza Station Albany, NY 12220-0536 The award will be presented at the annual meeting and luncheon of the New Netherland Institute on Saturday, May 19, in Albany. Alice P. Kenney Alice P. Kenney, Ph.D., (1938 - 1985) associate professor of history at Cedar Crest College, Allentown, Pa., was one of the early scholars who were keenly interested in the Dutch-American experience. A descendant of 17th-century Dutch settlers, among them the colorful Anneke Jans, she grew up in Schenectady, N.Y. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Middlebury College and her master's degree and doctorate from Columbia University. Dr. Kenney's books include "The Gansevoorts of Albany" and "Stubborn for Liberty." She also wrote a bicentennial history of the Revolution in Albany, a survey of Dutch artifacts in Hudson Valley museums and many journal articles. Previous winners of the Kenney award include Robert Sullivan, Schenectady County Public Library reference librarian; Karen Hartgen and Charles Fisher, archeologists; Russell Shorto, author of "Island at the Center of the World"; L. F. (Len) Tantillo, history artist; Peter G. Rose, historian and author of "Food, Drink and Celebrations of the Hudson Valley Dutch"; The Horlepiepdansers, Schenectady; Shirley W. Dunn, historian of East Greenbush, N.Y.; and Dr. Susan Staffa, historian and author of "Schenectady Genesis." The New Netherland Institute (NNI) is an independent nonprofit organization supporting research and education in Dutch-American history. For more than three decades, the NNI and its predecessor organization, the Friends of New Netherland, have supported the translation of New York's Dutch era documents. Through a three-year matching grant from the State of the Netherlands, the NNI undertakes financial and programmatic support of the New Netherland Research Center, relying heavily on NNI members to fulfill this mission. More information is available from the website www.nnp.org. The Annual Hendricks Award The NNI also offers the Annual Hendricks Award, given for the best book or book-length manuscript relating to any aspect of the Dutch colonial experience in North America. The award, given by Dr. Andrew A. Hendricks, carries a prize of $5,000 as well as a framed print of a painting by Len Tantillo. The deadline for the Hendricks Award is March 15. The award is presented at the annual New Netherland Seminar, held in September. end
Thanks Nancy! A lot of the lists have gone silent. I am busy working on my 3rd book, about life in 1643 Manhattan and I could use the info on the site since my characters live across from the graveyard. About that Newton, NY, is that Newtown on Long Island? I had some people there very early on and would love to see who's in there. Thank you again for all of your work- it is much appreciated! Dear Friends, I want to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum. Located in Brooklyn, NY, we represent one of only two historic houses in the nation dating from the New Netherland period, when parts of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware comprised a diverse and dynamic colony governed by the Dutch Republic. In addition to their indelible cultural legacy - words such as cookies and coleslaw, traditions such as St. Nicholas, and progressive ideas such as religious freedom and women's rights - the early immigrants to New Netherland were prolific. Their descendants, now numbering in the millions, inhabit all corners of the United States and have contributed greatly to American society. Presidents, movie stars, astronauts, artists, athletes, musicians, and everyday people like you and me would not be here if it were not for the oft-forgotten colony of New Netherland. Although the British capture of the colony in 1664 did much to erode Dutch traditions and anglicize the citizenry, the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum is committed to preserving one of the last examples of colonial Dutch architecture and educating the public about a unique, alternate history that is largely ignored. I hope you'll take a moment to explore our website and consider supporting us with your visits, talents, or gifts: http://wyckoffassociation.org/association/membership.html Please feel free to contact me for more information about the Museum or to find out how you can help sustain our initiatives. Hello, Evelyn: My maternal grandmother's maternal grandmother (born in 1834) was Rebecca Conover, 3rd daughter of Wm. V. and Martha Wyley Conover. Wm. V. is my Conover brick wall. Have not been able to determine the identities of his parents. Wm. V. was a farmer in So. Brunswick Twp., Middlesex County, NJ. Rebecca's siblings were Martha, Mary, William, Sarah, Jane, John and Newton. Rebecca married Lewis W. Spencer and lived with him in Herbertsville and Old Bridge, NJ. They had twin daughters. Do any of these names ring a bell? Thanks for writing, Rosemary ----- Original Message ----- From: <e.c.barber@q.com> To: <ny-olddutch-graves@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 19, 2010 4:27 PM Subject: Re: [NY-OLDDUTCH-GRAVES] Dutch on the Hudson > Rosemary, > My mother was a Conover born in White House Station, NJ, so please let me > know if there's any info I can (try to) help you with. > Evelyn > > > From: Rosemary Ferry > Sent: Friday, September 17, 2010 9:37 PM > To: ny-olddutch-graves@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [NY-OLDDUTCH-GRAVES] Dutch on the Hudson > > > Dear Nancy, > > Can you look up Brittain, Britten, Britton, VanKouwenhoven, Covenhoven and > Conover.
