The Blackwell family had possession of the island from 1676 until 1828, when New York City purchased it for $32,500. In 1921, the island was renamed "Welfare Island" and in 1972 was again renamed "Roosevelt Island". The City Hosptial building was torn down in 1994.] Michael BURKE, mate of the ferryboat Minnehannock, struggled for half an hour with a drowning woman in the cold waters of the East River Feb. 14. BURKE, with his heavy burden, managed to grasp a rope thrown to him and held on until he was dragged from the water. The woman was Ellen McDONALD, an employee of the City Hospital of Blackwell’s Island.
