Y. May 15, 1861: Astoria, Queens county, is determined not to be behind the rest of the State in patriotic efforts to sustain the honor of the Star and Stripes. A Company has been organized in the village and the people have generously donated $4,000 for the equipment of the volunteers and for the support of their families. HENRY L. VEMOSS and HENRY D. JOHNSON are the originators of the movement. The former served with distinction in the late Mexican War and will have command of the Company which will be attached to the BROOKLYN PHALANX, which is to go into immediate service. The committees are confident the Company will do no harm to reputation of the village or state. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
