I. July 22, 1854: About half past 1 o'clock yesterday morning, the inhabitants of the village of Astoria, Long Island, were alarmed by the loud cry of 'fire', which, upon inquiry, was found to have proceeded from a burning pile of lumber in an ally way between the houses of ANDREW SWAN and THEODORE HOLENBUGH and although every exertion was made to extinguish the flames the fire continued unchecked, as it were, until it had destroyed nine buildings on each side of the spot where it originated. Two engine companies and one hose company from Yorkville, were present but for want of water their efforts were unavailing. The member worked against the devouring element which did nit cease its work of distruction unti; 6 o'clock A.M. when it fially burned itself out.
