Using Hypnotic Suggestion to Effect a Cure of Case of Infantile Paralysis. Article Text: New York, July 15.--Dr. Alfred J. FOX, of this city, believes that he is curing Conrad SCHAUMBURG of infantile paralysis, a disease which up to now has regularly baffled physicians. The doctor has some reason for the faith that is in him, too, inasmuch as SCHAUMBURG, whose legs have been withered since he was a baby, can now walk short distances without the aid of crutches. And not the least amazing feature of the treatment is the fact that the doctor is working by hypnotic suggestion. SCHAUMBURG, who is 27 years old, has suffered from paralysis since he was a baby. Many physicians had pronounced his case incurable. The upper part of his body is powerful and well developed, but his legs are those of a child. Up to six months ago he could not move them at all. Yesterday when he appeared for one of his regular treatments, he entered his physician's office on crutches, but instead of swinging himself along in the old way, he moved one leg ahead of the other. He was placed on a bed and thrown into a hypnotic sleep. "Now," said the doctor, "I will give you a drink of the most exhilarating nectar that ever man tasted. It will make you perfectly happy." The doctor handed a glass of water to his patient, who sat up, drank it with apparent relish and sank back on the bed. The physician then suggested to SCHAUMBURG that his nectar was restoring circulation and building up the tissues of his legs; that his legs were as much in his control as any other part of his body. Dr. FOX believes that in six months he will have his patient walking as well as anyone. He says suggestions at first had no effect on SCHAUMBURG and there was no muscular movement at all in his legs. They were cold, dry and lifeless and measured by 6 1/2 inches in circumference. Now the doctor says they measure ten inches, have color and perspire. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
