Article Text: New York, December 11.--In view of many persons, William BLOODGOOD, fifty years old, a real estate man of No. 830 East One Hundred and Sixty-third street, the Bronx, leaped from the downtown platform of the Brooklyn Bridge station and was ground to pieces by a suburban express train. Several women who saw it became hysterical. Motorman George REIDEL, arrested, was bailed by a representative of the Interborough company. BLOODGOOD left a wife and two children. Among his friends he had the reputation of being wealthy. He had built extensively along the line of the proposed New York and Portchester Railroad and it is understood that he worried a great deal over the failure of the road to materialize. According to his wife and friends his home life was ideal. Business worry was the only explanation they could offer for his suicide. Among other things found on BLOODGOOD were two assignments of mortgages to his wife, one for $62,000, the other for $11,000. There were about fifty or sixty persons on both platforms of the station when BLOODGOOD made his final leap. After it was over only one or two witnesses could be found who admitted having seen him jump. According to them there was nothing strange in his manner of actions as he paced up and down the platform. The first car was almost upon him when he gave a yell, threw his overcoat in the air and plunged headlong toward the outside rail. Men shouted, women screamed, and in a few minutes panic was under way. Special officer FARLEY rushed the women away from the scene. Motorman REIDEL made a desperate effort to halt his train, and brought it to a stop after one car and the forward trucks of the second had passed over the unfortunate man. Subway attendants gathered up the mangled body and placed it on the platform. The head was found several feet away from the other portions. News of the suicide reached the street above, and the reserves from the Elizabeth street station, as well as those members of the Bridge Squad that could be spared had their hands full keeping the curious ones away. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
