Detective Crowley last evening extinguished a fire at Coppins' paint shop, 336 Niagara street. Damage slight. At 12:55 this morning Officer Fred Schwartz sounded an alarm on discovering fire in the 2-story frame building at Wilson and Peckham streets, owned and occupied by John Pyne as a grocery store and saloon. The fire was put out by policemen with $75 damage. Cause unknown. More Irish Pauper Immigrants. NEW YORK, July 7. – Eighty more assisted Irish paupers arrived here today on the "City of Rome". The Castle Garden authorities have carefully examined every case, and such of them as are able-bodied and can procure work will be allowed to remain. ECHOES FROM THE CITY HALL. CHICAGO, July 7, A United Press special from Cairo, Ill., says that Nelson Howard, colored, who shot dead John Kase, Wednesday at Mound City, was taken from jail at 2 o'clock yesterday and hanged. CRUSHED TO DEATH. Three Men Killed and Several Injured by the Falling of a Derrick. LAMONT, Il., July 7. – Yesterday while a large number of men were engaged in hoisting stone on a 8-guy derrick in Walker's quarry three of the guys broke and the stone with the derrick fell with a terrible crash upon the workmen below. Thos. Rogers and John Bloomington were crushed to death. Dennis Rogers was fatally hurt and seven others seriously.
