Article Text: Originally submitted by: L. Schmidt Suicide of a Former Batavian. An associated press dispatch from Detroit printed in this morning's papers states that Ex-State Senator Heman Redfield of Monroe, Michigan shot and killed himself in his lot at the cemetery Sunday. He left a note saying he was going to die on the only piece of property he owned in the world, and enclosed thirty-eight dollars for funeral expenses. The cause of his suicide is unknown. He was supposed to be comfortably off. He leaves a wife and daughter. The intelligence contained in the above dispatch was read with painful surprise by many people in Batavia where Mr Redfield was well known, and was the first intimation of his death that has been received here. The deceased was a son of the late Hon. Heman J Redfield of Batavia. He went west many years ago, and had been a prominent citizen of Monroe, having served as mayor, and, as the dispatch states, state senator. About two years ago, Mr Redfield became the victim of a mental disorder and was placed in the insane asylum at Kalamazoo, while his property was put in charge of his trustees. This accounts for his hallucination that he had no property. He was about sixty years of age. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com

At the call of his country, young R., following in the footsteps of his father, who in the war of 1812 volunteered with knapsack on his back to fight a foreign foe,-like him, our young friend did not wait to procure a commission, but volunteered his services as a private soldier; being that time a resident of the State of Michigan, he joined the 4th Regiment of the Michigan State Volunteers, and with is knapsack on his back marched to defend the Laws and the Constitution of the Untied Sates, leaving behind him a young and loving wife whom he married only last March. We are informed that the Company to which our young friend is attached, was stationed between Centreville and Fairfax Court House, and is the same which made itself so useful in stopping our retreating and panic-stricken forces, and compelling them to turn back. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article Text: Fatal Accident. It is our painful duty to record the sudden death of one of our esteemed citizens. On Friday after noon, the 13th inst., as Dr. C.A. Northrup, who was returning from a visit to a patient in the town of Pembroke, and when near the Steam Saw Mill, was discovered lying across his Gig, with his head wedged in between the box and the wheel, in which position it appears he must have traveled for two or three miles, as the flesh and hair was completely worn off one side of his head by the friction of the wheel. He was conveyed to the house of Mr D. Eggleston, in a senseless condition, in which state he remained until Monday morning, when death relieved him of his sufferings. Every attention was paid the unfortunate sufferer by Dr Clark of this place, and other physicians, but his injuries were too fatal to admit of successful surgical results. His remains were conveyed to his residence in Batavia, on Monday, and interred the following day. Deceased was 43 years of age. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com
