He leaves a wife and family. ************************ On the afternoon of Wednesday last John Rossiter left his borarding house at number 53 Oliver Street with a view of paying a visit to some friends at the village of Astoria, Long Island but he never reached there. He was born in England. ************************ Saturday last no less than 3 persons were sentenced to be hung on the 21st of November 1851: Joseph Clark for the murder of George T. Gillespie, a police officer of the Fourth ward; Michael Mulvey (Mulrey), for the murder of Charles Beekman, bar keeper ina an oyster saloon on the corner of Chatham and Orange Streets; James Sullivan for the murder of edward Smith on the 10th of August 1851. On the Same day ellen Doyle, convicted of manslaughter in the second degree, in killing Catharine Sullivan, was sentenced to five years imprisonment at Sing Sing. ******************************* Friday afternoon, a bricklayer by the name of Adam Winn residding at 18 Reade Street was severly injured about his hips and head by fallling from the scaffold of a new brick building errecting in Barrow Street near Hudson Street *************************** Saturday morning Samuel P. Hallett, of 18 Fifth Street, put an end to his earthly existence by administering to himself a powerful dose of laudanum. He leaves a wife and son. ***************************** Yesterday morning around 11:00 an aged gentleman, Jacob Ostrander of 103 varick streetwas attending service at the Baptist Church at the corner of McDougal and Bedfore streets he was suddenly seized with dizziness in the head and instantly fell from his seat upon the floor. ["Mr B.... enlisted in Mitchell's military company..."] We learn from the Milwaukee 'Daily Life,' that Oscar M. Brown, whosefriends live in this vicinity, was drowned in the river, just below Chestnut Street Bridge, in that city, on Tuesday morning, the 10th inst. Mr Brown had been in the employ of the La Crosse Railroad Co., for the past three years, as brakeman, baggage master, &c., all of which positions he filled creditably. Mr B. had quit the employ of the R.R., and enlisted in Mitchell's military company, the Friday previous. Evidence of violence is on the body; a deep hole in the skull, which is fractured at the forehead. The circumstances of his death are involved in mystery. He was found guilty and sent to prison for life. Michael worked at the Fire Department. George Ricker a witness for the people did not appear. The following jurors were sworn to try the case: Wm. E. Post Chauncey St. John George Ricker lived at 118 Chatham, corner of Orange Street, he kept an eating house. Charles Beekman was from Baden, Germany, Charles worked for George Ricker as a person who opened oysters. Charles was about 30 years old. George Ricker was present when Charles was killed. J.C. Gaffney lived in Pearl Street; in May he lived in Beekman Street. Patrick Blaney lived in Rosevelt Street. William Smith, age 14 lived at 104 Hester Street, he heard a man being killed at the corner of Orange and Chatham Streets. John T. Karney belonged to the Sixth Ward Police. Margaret Wheeler, lived at 130 Mulberry Street, her husband drives a carriage, she knew Michael Mulrey for five or six months. Margaret's mother lived in Thirteenth Street and Avenue A. Her mother's name was Catherine Mcgee, she was dead at this date. Delia Dennison lived in Vesey Street, she knew Michael Mulrey for two years. Delia borded with Mrs Wheeler. Thos. W. Constantine llived in City Hall Place, he knew Michael Mulrey for five or six years. He worked in the same shop with Michael. Michael was good, faithful, diligent and regular worker. James Whittley lived at 27 Rosevelt Street. Catherine Mulrey she is Michael Mulrey's mother. His father had been ded for nine years. Michael has kept the house for his mother and her four orphans, since his dad died. Serious accident on the Long Island railroad. yesterday morning about 2:00 officers Albertis, of the Firs, and Queen of the Third District found a man, Michael Gerren age 40 years with both legs nearly severed. Michael had been in this country a short time and got lost on sunday nite and wandered into the tunnel. Michael formerly lived at Six Mile Bridge in Ireland and has in this city a wife and three children living in the house with Owen Mcgowen, Corner of Smith and Dean Streets. Michael died on September 22, 1851 at 1:00 in the hospital **************************************** Mr. James Bradley age 6 years on Saturday afternoon was run over by a dirt cart while playing in front of his father's house. The remains of James Fenimore Cooper born September 15, 1789 died, September 14, 1851, aged, 62, were this day confined to their final resting place. The house he lived in was erected by his father Judge Cooper. The family who were present, consisted of his widow and five children, four daughters and one son. His eldest daughter is the auther of "Rural House" a noval. His youngest child is a son Saul Fennimore Cooper, Esq., a lawyer in Albany, New York. Among the mourners was Bishop Delancy, a brother of the widow. He is buried next to his father and mother, brothers and sister. The body was found by his brother. ************************ Friday afternoon James Morgan, age 8 years fell into the water at Red hook Point, and nearly drowned. ******************************* Samuel Lippes, a Hungrian refugee attempted suicide. *********************** Albany, New York, September 20, 1851, tonite at 6:30 two men were killed on the Schenectady railroad about a mile and a half from this city. They were both Irishmen, named Kearns, a widower 35 years old and Stack, single, 19 years old. ********************************* Rochester, New York, Saturday September 20, 1851...The bar held a meeting today in reference to the death of Judge Whittlesey. The funeral will take place tomorrow. ************************************** Meredith, New Hampshire, Saturday September 20, 1851, Dudley Leavitt, the veteran almanac maker died this morning. His age was 80. ******************************************* Margaret Downey, who was so severely burnt a few days since at the residence of Mr. Williams number 175 Gold Street, died this morning in great agony. She was 15 years old. ************************************** A carpenter by the name of Antoine Thomas a resident of Williamburgh was instantly killed on Thursday morning by the falling of a scaffold on which he was standing, at the house corner of Division Avenue and Morton streets in this city. Thomas was a man much respected in Williamsburg and leaves a wife and six children. **************************************** Saturday morning a child of Mrs. Hoyans about 1 1/2 years old, residing at the corner of Hudson Avenue and Plymouth Streets died from want of attention. It appears that the mother was left a widow some three weeks ago, since which time she has been unsettled in her mind and on Friday afternoon left with a mal acquainance for new York, where she remained until morning. Before leaving on Friday the child was locked up in a room by the mother, where it remained until her return and died soon after. ************************************** About 3 O Clock yesterday afternoon information was received a the First District station house, City Hall, that a grave had been opened and that an interment was about to be made in the burial ground of St. James (Roman Catholic) Church, on Jay Street. Assistant Captain Brown with a detachment of men, immediately proceeded to the scene and succeeded in arresting Niel McCaulley, Daniel McCaulley, Michael Dawson, patrick Farion and Frances Moran, who had just been engaged in the burial of the wife of the former, in violation of the city ordances. They were taken before Justice John C. Smith and admitted in bail to appear and answer this morning. His remains were identified by several companions, and an inquest was held upon them, by Coroner Geer, whose jury came to the conclusion that deceased came to his death by accidental drowning and therefore rendered a verdict accordingly. Mr. Clark and officer in the custom house, had a difficulty with Mr. Harry Harrison which came near resulting in a duel, but was finally adjusted. Shortly after the parties met in the Gem coffee-house, when William Harrison brother of Harry Harrison, renewed the difficulty against his brother's wish, and clark agreed to go out in the streets and fight him. He borrowed Harry Harrison's pistols. Seconds were chosen, and the parties went out on the streets, measured off the distance, and fired at the work. Hartsteine, arrived at with this news...Everything is perfectly quiet in California the only exception has been the murder and robbery of a man named Alexander Lesllie in el Dorado County, California on the 8th of August 1851, by a man named Jim Graham. The murdered was seized, tried, convicted and hung the next day. ************************************************* On Tuesday evening, about eight o clock a young French lady by the name of Lenori Franck, residing at number 194 Fourth street left her home without being observed by any member of the samily and at once proceeded to the wharf, foot of Jane Street , N.R. where she deliberately threw herself into the water for the purpose of putting an end to her existence. Several citizens heard her cries and took her to the Police statiion in a carriage, where the attendance of a physician was immediately procured and all the necessary remedies were applied to her body, but they proved of no avail and she expired at 9 o clock the same night.
