BALDWIN, a Brooklyn merchant, according to the announcement of the hospital physicians today. After drinking the soda BALDWIN was stricken with severe pains and died a few hours later. The hospital physicians were baffled by the case which they set down as one of ptomaine poisoning. An examination of the body after death showed that gas in the soda had distended the stomach, causing a rupture of the wall and the soda flowed through the puncture into the lung cavity. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article Text: New York,July 16--The death today of Patrick CUSHING, a resident American and former day watchman at the Hoffman Island quarantine station, from Asiatic cholera, has aroused some apprehension in New York of the spread of the scourge beyond the limitations of quarantine, and vigorous steps were taken today to stamp out any possible sources of infection. Health Officer DOTY himself says there is no cause for alarm. The ward in the hospital on Staten Island, where CUSHING lay for twenty-four hours, supposedly ill of ptomaine poisoning, has been closed and fumigated, while a strict quarantine has been established at the home of his widow and four children. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
