CHAPMAN of Brooklyn removed a bullet several weeks ago, was yesterday taken to Dannemora hospital for the criminal insane to be recommended to the prison as cured of his insanity. LEONDOWSKI was an employe of the Dannemore hospital prior to his operation. He answered a series of questions rationally yesterday and prepared a written statement expressing gratitude to Dr. CHAPMAN for restoring his sanity and curing the violent pains in the head from which he previously suffered. Dr. CHAPMAN, who is partially paralyzed, performed the operation while seated in a wheelchair. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Using Hypnotic Suggestion to Effect a Cure of Case of Infantile Paralysis. Article Text: New York, July 15.--Dr. Alfred J. FOX, of this city, believes that he is curing Conrad SCHAUMBURG of infantile paralysis, a disease which up to now has regularly baffled physicians. The doctor has some reason for the faith that is in him, too, inasmuch as SCHAUMBURG, whose legs have been withered since he was a baby, can now walk short distances without the aid of crutches. And not the least amazing feature of the treatment is the fact that the doctor is working by hypnotic suggestion. SCHAUMBURG, who is 27 years old, has suffered from paralysis since he was a baby. Many physicians had pronounced his case incurable. The upper part of his body is powerful and well developed, but his legs are those of a child. Up to six months ago he could not move them at all. Yesterday when he appeared for one of his regular treatments, he entered his physician's office on crutches, but instead of swinging himself along in the old way, he moved one leg ahead of the other. He was placed on a bed and thrown into a hypnotic sleep. "Now," said the doctor, "I will give you a drink of the most exhilarating nectar that ever man tasted. It will make you perfectly happy." The doctor handed a glass of water to his patient, who sat up, drank it with apparent relish and sank back on the bed. The physician then suggested to SCHAUMBURG that his nectar was restoring circulation and building up the tissues of his legs; that his legs were as much in his control as any other part of his body. Dr. FOX believes that in six months he will have his patient walking as well as anyone. He says suggestions at first had no effect on SCHAUMBURG and there was no muscular movement at all in his legs. They were cold, dry and lifeless and measured by 6 1/2 inches in circumference. Now the doctor says they measure ten inches, have color and perspire. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Henri RAGOT, 17 years old, to Try His Aeroplane at Garden City, N.Y. Article Text: New York, Dec. 26.--There is a new aeroplane at the Garden City Aviation Field, built on a principle representing what aeroplane constructors have hitherto sought to avoid, and manned by a crew that has never yet been in the air. It made its first appearance on the field yesterday morning and the few veteran aviators who are making winter quarters at Garden City saw several things in it to marvel at. The aeroplane is the invention of 17-year-old Henri RAGOT, who has been aided by his father, Louis F. RAGOT, a sculptor, and his brother Charles. The chief feature of the machine is flexible wings copied after studies of snapshots of birds by the boy. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! James G. WILSON Marries Second Wife. Article Text: New York, May 16.--A wedding of great interest to army and navy circles took place in this city today, when Mrs. Mary H. NICHOLSON, widow of Rear Admiral John W. A. NICHOLSON, became the bride of Gen. James Grant WILSON. The wedding was celebrated at the home of the bride in West Seventy-ninth street and was attended by many prominent officers of the army and navy. General WILSON, who is now 75 years old and nearly twenty years the senior of his bride, was married before, his first wife, whom he married in 1860, being a Miss COGSWELL, a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant. Gen. WILSON has been known as an author as well as a soldier. In 1857 he went to Chicago and founded the first literary journal published in the Northwest. In 1862 he was commissioned major of the Fifteenth Illinois cavalry, becoming colonel soon afterward. During the Presidency of Gen. GRANT he was in charge of social arrangements at the White House. It is an interesting coincidence that when Gen. WILSON was a colonel under Gen. GRANT one of his most intimate friends was Admiral NICHOLSON, the husband of Mrs. NICHOLSON, whom Gen. WILSON has now made his bride. Gen. WILSON is known in Macon. He made the raid across from Columbus to Macon, capturing this town after LEE and JOHNSTON has surrendered. When notified out on the Columbus road by a flag of truce from Gen. Howell COBB of the collapsed condition of the Confederacy he refused to believe it, and gave COBB five minutes to capitulate. He was here again in command of 7,000 troops during the Spanish American war, and saved the city from being shot-up by negro troops. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! August 16, 1863: The funeral ceremonies over the remains of this distinguished Irishman, who, during his quiet and unobtrusive life since his advant into this country, has secured not only the esteem but the love of all of those who came in contact with him, took place at half past two o'clock yesterday afternoon, from his late residence at Astoria. Mr. Emmets demise leaves a sad blank in the gallery of eminent Irishmen and patriots. The offshoot of a noble ancstry, the deceased gentlrman never lost any of the gualities which strictly belong to true manhood. From twelve o'clock yesterday up to half past two , the time the body was removed to St. Georges Episcopal Church, the late residence of the deceased, which is situated on one of the most picturesque spots in Astoria, became the scene of a perpetual visitation by hosts of friends and admirers. among those were, Richard O'Gorman, Judges Lott and Clarke, Brian Lawrence, Mr. Kennedy and many others. The services at St. Georges were conducted by Rev. Dr. Morgan, of St. Thomas of New York city, after which the body was removed to the hearse and a solemn cortage moved to Hunters Point ferry, and on to the Marble Cemetery at Second Street, where the remains were deposited in the family vault in a befitting maner. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Every daym a race takes place between the Slyvan Shore and some one of her rivals. The latter, we believe, has thus far proved the victor in every contest. Article Text: A family quarrel of nearly six years standing, in Steuben county, came to a termination on Sunday, June 20, by the killing of one of the parties to it by another, under peculiarly distressing circumstances. Four miles from the village of Troupsburg Center, in Steuben county, a farmer, highly respected, has lived for many years. He has two children, a son and a daughter, George E. HENDRICKS aged twenty-one, and Helen, aged twenty-six. Six years ago Helen, in opposition to the wishes of her family, married a man named Wm. H. DILDINE. He was a young man of no little talent and education, but of a somewhat questionable character. Helen HENDRICKS, being an only daughter, was given superior educational advantages, and at the time of her marriage had been but a short time from college, where she graduated with high honors. DILDINE was a man of splendid physique, and well calculated to win the affections of any lady. The marriage of his daughter was a terrible blow to the old! farmer, but he conquered his resentment to her husband, and endeavored to make the best of the situation. Shortly after their marriage the DILDINES removed to Wellsville, Allegheny county, where they lived together until last week. Two children, a boy and a girl, were born to them. Not long after taking up their abode in Wellsville, rumors that DILDINE was neglecting and abusing his wife reached the HENDRICKS homestead. These reports finally became so frequent that old Mr. HENDRICKS went to Wellsville and remonstrated with his son-in-law about his conduct. This led to a bitter quarrel between them, and to HENDRICK's taking his daughter and her two children, one an infant in arms, back home with him. This was in 1873. Mrs. DILDINE remained home a few days, when her husband went to her father's and forced her to return to Wellsville with him. They continued to live a miserable life together until Saturday last. In the morning of that day a quarrel arose between DILDINE and his wife at teh breakfast table. He threw a plate at her, striking her on the head and inflicting a bad wound. Not satisfied with that, he knocked her down, and, seizing her by the hair, pounded her head against the floor until she was almost unconscious. He then left the house. After she had recovered sufficiently she arose from the floor, and writing the following note, also went away, taking her children with her: Will: I will make one more effort to make your home happy. I think this one will be successful. May you be as happy as you deserve to be. HELEN Mrs. DILDINE went to her father's, reaching there with her children on Saturday evening. At intervals for the past two years Mr. HENDRICKS has suffered considerable loss by fires, which have been very plainly of incendiary origin. The first one of these fires destroyed a barn and its contents, a few days after DILDINE had taken his wife away from her father in 1873. The last occurred a few weeks ago, and since then George E. HENDRICKS, the son, procured a navy revolver, and has kept a watch on the premises. Revelations made by Mrs. DILDINE on Saturday night, after reaching home, confirmed the suspicions of Mr. HENDRICKS as to the origin of the fire. Mrs. DILDINE said that on the way to Wellsville with her husband in 1873 he was very bitter in his threats against the life and property of her father and brother, and said that he had been arranging with a man to burn her father's bar, and added, with an oath, that "if he didn't do it he knew damn well who would and he only wished the whole HENDRICK family could be in the building and burn to a crisp." She neve! r informed her relatives of this, for fear her husband would kill her. Last Sunday afternoon, between five and six o'clock, DILDINE drove up to HENDRICKS' house with a horse and buggy. He entered the house, where his wife, her father, mother and brother were assembled. Failing in his purpose to get the child away, he commenced talking about the children, and said that he was going to take his boy with him "in spite of hell." The child was playing in the yard when his father drove up, but, upon seeing him, ran into the house and sprang into his mother's lap, where it lay holding to her dress. DILDINE seized the child, and, tearing it screaming away from its mother, started rapidly toward his wagon. The mother ran after him, shreiking for her child. George HENDRICKS, who had maintained silence from the moment his brother-in-law entered the house, sprang from his chair as DILDINE left the house, and, drawing his revolver, cried out to him to stop. DILDINE paid no attention to young HENDRICKS, and the latter fired. DILDINE kept on toward the wagon, closely followed by his wife. HENDRICKS fired again, but DILDINE neither stopped nor said a word. A third shot was fired. Then DILDINE turned about, facing his wife, who had overtaken him at that point. He was deadly pale, and, after trying to take a step forward, fell heavily to the ground. Mrs. DILDINE stooped down and took the child from her h! usband's arms. He looked up and said: "Helen do you see your dying husband? Your brother has killed me." To a question as to whether she could do anything for him he made no reply, and she ran into the house with the child. Young HENDRICKS is a leading church member of Troupsburg, and a remarkable devout and pious young man. After seeing that he had fatally wounded his brother in law, he took his hand, as he lay on the ground, and asked him: "Have you any hope in Christ, Will?" DILDINE opened his eyes and said, vehemently as he was able: "No--none!" Nothing further passed between the dying man and any of the family. Young HENDRICKS walked coolly to and fro by DILDINE with his watch in his hand, to get, as he said the exact time of the man's death. He died in eight minutes after he fell. Coroner M. D. ELLISON was informed of the shooting and held an inquest at HENDRICKS' house on Monday. Every shot fired by HENDRICKS had taken effect. One entered the back below the left shoulder blade, passed through the left lung and the heart, lodging in the right lung. Another entered the left hip, and the third lodged in the right leg below the knee. The jury found a verdict according to the above facts, and HENDRICKS was arrested and taken to Bath yesterday, and lodged in Jail to await the action of the grand jury. He says that he believes God will hold him guiltless in doing what he did, as it was done in defense of his sister and her children. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article Text: White Plains, N. Y, Nov. 4.--Mrs. Amelia KARLIN motored to White Plains courthouse in her imported car and induced Supreme Court Justice MORSCHAUSER to allow her to reopen the case in connection with an order requiring her to show cause why she should not furnish $40 a month for the support of her parents, both over 80, and about to become public charges. The order was returnable Oct. 11 and Mrs. KARLIN, who resides in a fashionable apartment house at 434 Central Park West, Manhattan, failed to appear. Mrs. KARLIN yesterday denied the statement of Commissioner of Charities GAUL of Yonkers that she has an allowance of $200 a week for household expenses, and said she couldn't afford to give $40 a month to aid her parents. "If this woman can come to court in a Rolls-Royce car," said Justice MORSCHAUSER, "we shall get support for her parents out of her." He set the date of the hearing for Nov. 14. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com
