Took Four Hours to Get Knot Tied and Four Minutes to Untie it. Article Text: It took Robert C. MASON, 17 years old and Grace SUYDAM, a pretty little blonde-haired girl of 15, four hours to find a preacher to marry them in Jersey City on Christmas night last. In the equity term of the Brooklyn supreme court Justice MAREAN annulled the marriage in exactly four minutes, and little Grace, weeping, parted from her boy husband and went to her home at 48 Downing street with her mother, on whose testimony the justice granted the decree. The girl is the daughter of a livery stable man, and young MASON, who also lives in Brooklyn, is the son of a broker. They met at high school and suffered severely from calf love. On Christmas night they slipped away from a party and went over to Jersey. When Grace came home that night she seemed very much excited, and finally confessed to her mother that she and MASON had been married and had then hurried back to their respective homes. "You are a very fortunate young man that there is no need of a charge of abduction against you," said Justice MAREAN to the youthful bridegroom after he had declared the marriage annulled. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! A Domestic Row Carried Even Beyond the Grave. Article Text: Died - On Sunday, February 20, of a broken heart, May, unbeloved wife of Thomas JENKS. Funeral services Thursday, February 24, at 2 p.m., in her late residence, No. 318 Hawthorne street Flatbush. Interment in Greenwood. New York, Feb. 24.--This death notice in a Brooklyn newspaper yesterday told the last chapter in the history of the domestic infelicities of Thomas JENKS and his wife May, and showed the bitterness that has existed between the couple for years has been carried even to the grave. As a bequest, the hatred has been handed down to her daughter, Ida May JENKS, who inserted the death notice in the newspapers. She said it was her mother's last request that she be spoken of as an "unbeloved wife," whose death had been caused by a broken heart. Miss JENKS asserted her father's treatment had been the direct cause of Mrs. JENKS's death and when he failed to visit her in her home in Hawthorne Street the four days of her illness the wife gave her last instructions to their child to publish the facts of his indifference after her death. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Wife on Deathbed Asked Him Never to Leave Her Daughter. Article Text: New York, June 25.--A vow at her mother's deathbed led to the unusual romance that will culminate in the marriage of Miss Isabel GORDON to her step-father, Alexander TAYLOR, at their home in Richmond Hill, L. I., next Thursday. Miss GORDON is 21 years old and her fiance step-father is 35. Ten years ago TAYLOR married Mrs. Grace GORDON, a widow. Although but a child, Isabel refused to look upon TAYLOR as her father. She always called him by his first name and it was not until after her mother's death that she called him "dad." Her mother's dying request was that TAYLOR should always take care of Isabel and never become separated from her as long as he lived. This was promised. In their bereavement the couple sought solace in each other's company and soon they became warmly attached to each other. Together they sought counsel of Miss GORDON's grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth WHEELER, who occupies the adjoining cottage. Mrs. WHEELER readily consented to the marriage. "I was not the least bit surprised," said Mrs. WHEELER today. "For months I have seen the romance develop, unknown to them. They did not realize they were in love until after Isabel's illness." ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NY-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
