Pierce Dead Expires at Utica after illness of ten weeks Husband Once Minister Here Was Pastor of First Methodist Episcopal Church From 1902 to 1907 and Was Superintendent on the Black River District in 1916, 1917, 1918. (Special to the Times) Mrs. Mattie A. Powers Pierce, 70, wife of Rev. Dr. David F. Pierce, retired minister and former resident of Watertown and Great Bend, died this morning at her residence, 107 Boyce Avenue, after an illness of ten weeks. * Surviving her, besides her husband, are two daughters, Mrs. Edmund [sic.] M. Hughes, Utica, and Mrs. John Kilpatrick, Glens Falls, a son, Robert M. Crosier, Syracuse and two grandchildren. Mrs. David F. Pierce as well as her husband, was well known in this section where Dr. Pierce help pastorates of Methodist Episcopal Churches. From 1902 to 1907 he was pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church here. * For six years he was the district superintendent of the Mohawk District until April 10, 1916, when he was appointed district superintendent of the Black River district at a conference session held here. He held the superintendency of that district in 1916, 1917 and 1918. * Dr. and Mrs. Pierce resided in Watertown for several years until 1920 when Dr. Pierce consented to take over the pastorate of the Woolworth Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church of Great Bend to succeed Rev. J.S. Eldridge, who resigned. He served as supply pastor of that church for two years and in April, 1933, he and Mrs. Pierce moved to Rome. * Transcribed by, Janice Jordan * My note: Mrs. Martha A. David Franklin Pierce, D.D. 89, retired Methodist Episcopal superintendent and one of the few remaining membergs of Bacon Post 53, GAR, died yesterday, Dec. 3, 1936, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Kilpatrick, Glens Falls [NY]. <excerpt> In 1874 he married Miss Mary Jardin [of] Waddington, [NY] who died in 1875. In 1876 he married Miss Adeline Phillins, Dickinson, [NY] who succumbed in 1905. from NORTHERN NEW YORK [NY] CONFERENCE, MEMOIRS, page 160: EUGENE HOWARD JOY This valiant leader in our Conference, who had given forty years of effective service therein, fell asleep in the home of his son in Los Angeles, California [CA]. In 1930, while visiting the family of Jason Joy, he suffered a paralytic stroke, which confined him in bed for six patient years of suffering. In letters to the writer, dictated to others, he always praised the devoted and tireless service rendered in caring for him by Colonel and Mrs. Joy. Doctor Joy's ministerial career ran the gamut of service of an intinerant Methodist minister. He served both country and city churches, as well as two terms as District Superintendent. They took from said vessel what they had occasion for, & 'tis said some of the Pyrats went in her to Barbadoes. They flush of silver and god, and say, they have made a voyage, and intend to seperate.
